Daniel 11:23 - Rising to Power With a Small Following
Some critics of Donald Trump point to occasions when his rally crowds appear smaller than expected. But Daniel 11:23 describes a ruler who becomes strong despite beginning with relatively few supporters:

“And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.” - Daniel 11:23, KJV

Historically, this passage is commonly connected with Antiochus IV Epiphanes. However, some Christians also understand Antiochus as foreshadowing a future Antichrist.

I personally believe Donald Trump is the Antichrist, and this verse is one reason Daniel 11 gets my attention. The prophecy does not say that this ruler must always have enormous crowds. It describes someone who can become powerful through alliances, strategy, and deception even while working with a comparatively small group.

That said, “a small people” should not automatically be equated with the size of a modern political rally. The stronger connection would be the ruler gaining political strength despite initially limited backing.

Jesus warned us not to be deceived. Political popularity, huge crowds, or small crowds do not determine whether someone is righteous. Christians must test everything by Scripture and put their trust in Christ alone.

“Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.” - Psalm 146:3, KJV

Gains power with a small number of followers

Theological Significance
The verse also carries a broader spiritual lesson: God can use even a small group or seemingly weak individuals to accomplish significant outcomes, contrasting human reliance on numbers with divine purposes (similar to Gideon’s army in Judges 7). Additionally, some interpreters see this passage as foreshadowing the rise of an end-times figure, often linked to the Antichrist, who will similarly gain power through deception.

Summary
Daniel 11:23 portrays a ruler who:

Forms an alliance or treaty
Acts deceitfully after the agreement
Gains power with a small number of followers Historically, this is often linked to Antiochus IV Epiphanes, while theologically, it illustrates the dynamics of power, deception, and God’s use of the weak to fulfill His purposes

Gains power with a small number of followers

Daniel 11:23 describes a ruler who, after forming an alliance, acts deceitfully and rises to power with only a small group of followers.
Verse Text
Daniel 11:23 states: “After coming to an agreement with him, he will act deceitfully, and with only a few people he will rise to power” (NIV) or “And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people” (KJV). The verse emphasizes two key elements: the formation of an alliance and the ruler’s subsequent deceitful actions.

Meaning and Interpretation
The verse is part of a larger prophetic passage describing the rise and actions of various rulers. Daniel 11:23 specifically highlights a ruler who gains power through cunning and strategic alliances rather than sheer numbers. Despite having only a small following, he becomes strong, demonstrating that influence and power can come from strategy and deception rather than military might or large armies.
The deceit mentioned in the verse indicates that the ruler will not honor the alliance in good faith, using it instead to advance his own ambitions. This serves as a warning about the potential for betrayal in political or social agreements and the importance of discernment

Historical Context
Many biblical scholars associate this prophecy with Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a Seleucid king in the second century BC. He is known for his treacherous political maneuvers, including forming temporary alliances and then acting against those who trusted him. Antiochus IV is infamous for persecuting the Jewish people, defiling the temple in Jerusalem, and breaking treaties, which aligns with the deceit described in Daniel 11:23

We are living in an age when artificial intelligence can create images, videos, voices, and stories that look real even when they are not. At the same time, some of the most powerful people in technology have sought political influence while AI has rapidly expanded. Now major AI leaders are publicly warning about serious safety risks and calling for stronger safeguards or slower development. President Trump, meanwhile, has pushed back against calls for stronger AI guardrails and has argued that slowing American AI development could benefit China.

Trump has also repeatedly shared AI-generated political imagery on social media. Recent reporting has documented images portraying him as a superhero, military leader, and other larger-than-life figures.

That is why Psalm 146:3 remains so important:

“Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.” - Psalm 146:3, KJV

Christians should test AI. Test political memes. Test conspiracy theories. Test preachers. Test politicians. Test what you read online. And test what I say.

Do not let an impressive image replace truth. Do not let political loyalty replace discernment. Do not let a human leader take the place that belongs to Christ.

Love the truth. Reject deception. Read your Bible. Test the spirits. Jesus Christ alone is Lord.

Donald Trump has acknowledged using AI, while declining to explain exactly how he personally uses it. His social-media accounts and the White House have also circulated numerous AI-generated images and videos. PolitiFact found that 21 of 36 AI posts it reviewed from Trump’s Truth Social account promoted or sensationalized Trump or his administration. To me, that kind of self-exalting imagery brings to mind Daniel’s warning about the boastful little horn - one with “a mouth speaking great things” (Daniel 7:8, KJV). That is my interpretation of Scripture, and Christians should test it for themselves against the Word of God.

Title: The Kingdom is Not of This World: Reclaiming the True GospelScripture Focus: John 18:36, 1 Corinthians 15:1–4, Matthew 11:12IntroductionGrace and peace to you, brothers and sisters. Today, we live in a world consumed by the pursuit of power. Everywhere we look, people are fighting for control, dominance, and political supremacy. Tragically, this hunger for power has breached the walls of the church.Today, we see many so-called conservative Christians misusing Scripture—specifically passages like Matthew 11:12—to justify hurting their enemies, taking power by force, or coercing others into their specific interpretations of the Bible. They try to fashion a gospel out of political strength and earthly rule. But church, let us be completely clear: political dominance is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Many so-called conservative Christians misuse Matthew 11:12 to justify hurting their enemies, taking power by force, or forcing their interpretation of Scripture onto others. That is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight” (John 18:36 KJV). We are called to love our enemies, preach the Gospel, and make disciples, not force an earthly political kingdom upon people.

Take It by Force Is Not the Way of Christ
Texts: 1 Samuel 2:12-17; Matthew 11:12; John 18:36
I believe some MAGA-aligned false prophets, false teachers, and conservative evangelical apologists want to “take it by force.” To me, that resembles Eli’s sons, the “sons of Belial,” who abused their religious authority for selfish gain. Scripture says, “Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.” - 1 Samuel 2:12, KJV. They were priests, but their religious titles did not make them faithful to God.

When someone resisted their corrupt demands concerning the sacrifice, their servant said, “Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.” - 1 Samuel 2:16, KJV. That phrase should be a warning whenever religion becomes centered on domination, political power, control, greed, or forcing people to conform. Christianity is not supposed to become a tool for taking power by force.

True Christianity Versus Three Distortions
Texts: Galatians 1:6-9; Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 6:1-2; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Scripture warns that Christianity can be distorted in several directions. We can add human requirements to the Gospel, turn Christianity into legalism, or misuse grace as an excuse for lawlessness. True Christianity avoids all three.

Historically, Judaized Christianity referred to teaching that Gentile believers needed to adopt Jewish requirements, such as circumcision and observance of the Mosaic law, in addition to faith in Christ. So MAGA conservatism is not literally the same historical controversy. But I believe there is a modern parallel whenever Christians add America, conservative traditions, political ideology, cultural values, or loyalty to a movement to what it means to be a faithful Christian. Contemporary American Christianity does have major debates over how closely Christianity should be connected to national identity, government, and politics.

The Little Horn’s Boastful Speech in Daniel
In the Book of Daniel, the “little horn” is a prophetic symbol that emerges from the fourth beast — the Roman Empire — and is described as having “eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke boastfully” (Daniel 7:8). This horn is distinct from the other ten horns of the beast, as it arises after them and even uproots three of the original horns.

The Boastful Words
The horn’s “boastful words” (or “great words”) are central to its identity. They are not just arrogant speech but blasphemy against God. The horn “spoke out against the Most High” and sought to change times and laws (Daniel 7:25). This defiance is seen as a direct challenge to God’s authority and His people’s covenant.

Historical and Theological Interpretation
Many Christian interpreters identify the little horn as a future world ruler — often called the Antichrist — who will rise in the end times. This figure will:

Oppress God’s people for three and a half years (time, times, and half a time).

Wages war against the saints and prevails for a time.

Desecrate worship and disrupt God’s order, as seen in Daniel 8:11–12.

The horn’s boastfulness is not merely pride; it is spiritual rebellion — an attempt to usurp divine authority and set up an idolatrous system.

The End of the Horn
The vision concludes with the horn’s downfall: “I kept watching because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept watching until the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning fire” (Daniel 7:11).

This signifies the ultimate defeat of the horn’s power and the restoration of God’s kingdom.

In summary: The little horn’s boastful speech in Daniel is a prophetic image of a future, blasphemous ruler who will oppose God, oppress His people, and be ultimately destroyed at the end of the age.

The Little Horn’s Boastful Speech in Daniel
In the Book of Daniel, the “little horn” appears in a vision of four beasts, each representing a world empire. The fourth beast is the Roman Empire, with ten horns symbolizing ten kings or rulers from that kingdom.

From among these horns, a “little horn” emerges, which is described as having “eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke boastfully” (Daniel 7:8). This horn is marked by arrogance and defiance — it speaks against the Most High, oppresses God’s people, and seeks to change times and laws (Daniel 7:25).

The prophet Daniel is troubled by the horn’s words and asks for clarification. An angel explains that the horn will rise after the ten kings, subdue three of them, and rule for three and a half years (time, times, and half a time) before being destroyed (Daniel 7:11).

The “boastful words” are central to the vision because they reveal the horn’s hostility toward God and His people. Daniel watches until the horn’s reign ends, when the beast is slain and its body destroyed, thrown into the blazing fire (Daniel 7:11).

Key points about the little horn’s boastfulness:

It is a symbol of a future world ruler (often identified as the Antichrist) who opposes God.

Its arrogance is not just pride but blasphemy — it speaks against the Most High and disrupts God’s order

In summary, the little horn’s boastful speech in Daniel is a prophetic warning of a future leader who will rise with great power, defy God, and oppress His people — but whose reign will end at the judgment, when the beast is slain and burned.

Today, we are hearing the phrase “common sense” over and over again at the Republican Midterm Convention. Republican leaders are describing their political movement, policies, and cultural agenda as a “common sense” revolution. President Trump himself said that Republican policies are about “common sense more than anything else.”

But Christians need to remember: common sense is not the Gospel.

Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense and later The Age of Reason. Paine was a deist who rejected divine revelation and central Christian claims. Human reason, political philosophy, conservative common sense, and liberal common sense cannot replace the revelation of God in Jesus Christ.

Paul wrote, “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” - 1 Corinthians 1:18, KJV.

The Gospel is not a “common sense revolution.” The Gospel is that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.

Conservatives cannot save you. Republicans cannot save you. Liberals cannot save you. Political common sense cannot save you. Human wisdom cannot save you.

Jesus Christ saves.
