True Christianity Versus Three Distortions Texts: Galatians 1:6-9; Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 6:1-2; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Scripture warns that Christianity can be distorted in several directions. We can add human requirements to the Gospel, turn Christianity into legalism, or misuse grace as an excuse for lawlessness. True Christianity avoids all three. Historically, Judaized Christianity referred to teaching that Gentile believers needed to adopt Jewish requirements, such as circumcision and observance of the Mosaic law, in addition to faith in Christ. So MAGA conservatism is not literally the same historical controversy. But I believe there is a modern parallel whenever Christians add America, conservative traditions, political ideology, cultural values, or loyalty to a movement to what it means to be a faithful Christian. Contemporary American Christianity does have major debates over how closely Christianity should be connected to national identity, government, and politics.
