January 6: When Political Power Becomes a False Gospel

January 6, 2021 should serve as a serious warning to Christians about what can happen when political loyalty becomes more important than following Jesus Christ. That day, a mob breached the United States Capitol while Congress was meeting to certify the Electoral College vote. Violence followed, and the congressional proceeding was interrupted.
Christians should reject political violence regardless of who commits it. Jesus did not call His Church to conquer an earthly government for Him. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36 KJV). Yet some conservative Christian teachers and pastors have portrayed Donald Trump using religious language such as “anointed” or “chosen,” presenting political power as though it were part of God's plan to save America. Christians must test such claims against Scripture. America does not have a political savior. Republicans cannot save us. Democrats cannot save us. Presidents cannot save us. Jesus Christ alone saves.

Trump says he uses AI but does not want to tell people what he uses it for. His social-media accounts have repeatedly shared AI-generated material, including false or misleading narratives and images portraying him as a pope, a crowned ruler, a superhero, and other larger-than-life figures. PolitiFact found that 21 of 36 AI posts it reviewed from Trump’s Truth Social account promoted or sensationalized Trump or his administration. AP has likewise reported on his frequent use of AI imagery to portray himself in powerful or mythical roles. To me, that kind of self-exalting imagery brings to mind Daniel’s warning about the boastful little horn - one with “a mouth speaking great things” (Daniel 7:8, KJV). That is my interpretation of Scripture, and Christians should test it for themselves against the Word of God.

I use AI for a different purpose. I struggle with spelling and grammar, so I use it to help me put my thoughts into words, correct my writing, and point people back to Jesus Christ and Scripture - not to Trump, not to myself, and not to any man.

AI is a tool. Jesus Christ is Lord. Scripture is the standard. Test everything.

The Little Horn’s Boastful Speech in Daniel
In the Book of Daniel, the “little horn” is a prophetic symbol that emerges from the fourth beast — the Roman Empire — and is described as having “eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke boastfully” (Daniel 7:8). This horn is distinct from the other ten horns of the beast, as it arises after them and even uproots three of the original horns.

The Boastful Words
The horn’s “boastful words” (or “great words”) are central to its identity. They are not just arrogant speech but blasphemy against God. The horn’s boastfulness is not merely pride; it is spiritual rebellion — an attempt to usurp divine authority and set up an idolatrous system.

The End of the Horn
The vision concludes with the horn’s downfall: “I kept watching because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept watching until the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning fire” (Daniel 7:11).

This signifies the ultimate defeat of the horn’s power and the restoration of God’s kingdom.

Today, we are hearing the phrase “common sense” over and over again at the Republican Midterm Convention. Republican leaders are describing their political movement, policies, and cultural agenda as a “common sense” revolution. President Trump himself said that Republican policies are about “common sense more than anything else.”

But Christians need to remember: common sense is not the Gospel.

Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense and later The Age of Reason. Paine was a deist who rejected divine revelation and central Christian claims. Human reason, political philosophy, conservative common sense, and liberal common sense cannot replace the revelation of God in Jesus Christ.

Paul wrote, “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” - 1 Corinthians 1:18, KJV.

The Gospel is not a “common sense revolution.” The Gospel is that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.

Conservatives cannot save you. Republicans cannot save you. Liberals cannot save you. Political common sense cannot save you. Human wisdom cannot save you.

Jesus Christ saves.

Proverbs 4:27 says, “Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.” Scripture repeatedly describes life as a path. There is a way of wisdom and a way of foolishness, a path of righteousness and a path of wickedness. That is why Proverbs 4:26 says, “Ponder the path of thy feet.” Pay attention to where you are walking. Do not blindly follow politicians, preachers, celebrities, movements, traditions, or crowds. Test everything by the Word of God. Deuteronomy 5:32 says, “Ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.” This is not about modern political parties. The Christian path is not Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal. Our standard is God’s Word, and our Lord is Jesus Christ. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Proverbs also commands us, “Remove thy foot from evil.” Do not excuse evil because someone belongs to your political party. Do not defend wickedness because someone claims to be Christian. Romans 12:9 says, “Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” Sometimes following Christ means leaving behind an ideology, a false teacher, hatred, pride, or an idol. Jesus warned that the broad way leads to destruction, while the narrow way leads to life. The question is not how many people are walking a certain road. The question is whether Jesus is leading you there. Colossians 2:6 says, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.” Walk in Christ. Love God. Love your neighbor. Love your enemies. Speak truth. Show mercy. Reject hatred, deception, pride, and idolatry. Do not turn to the right or to the left. Keep following Jesus. “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” - John 14:6.

Vice President JD Vance recently said that he would be “not shocked if the Antichrist was walking among us.”

That statement should make Christians think carefully.

Vance is looking at the condition of the world, spiritual darkness, technology, artificial intelligence, and other troubling developments and wondering whether the Antichrist could already be here.

But Christians should remember that deception often works because people are looking in the wrong direction.

I believe Donald Trump is the Antichrist described in biblical prophecy, and imagery like this reminds me of Scripture's warnings about a ruler who exalts himself. Daniel 11:36 says he “shall exalt himself, and magnify himself.” That identification is my interpretation of prophecy; the Bible itself does not name Trump.
Christians must not worship human power or put their ultimate trust in presidents, military strength, or political movements. “Put not your trust in princes” (Psalm 146:3, KJV).
Jesus Christ alone has ultimate authority. “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18).
Do not worship the power of man. Worship Jesus Christ. Only Jesus saves.
