As Maslow emphasized, if one has a strong ability to do something, one has a powerful motivation to do that thing; and one’s rewards for doing that, not something else, are overflowing. Character is not destiny as much as ability is. This is a central point in this endeavor of who to be. Hence, this new and expansive take on Identity, as presented in this work, is related not just to “who one is” or simply “being myself,” it is related to one’s inmost potentials, talents, and proclivities. It is related to this new child-caring emerging out of the Sixties and throughout the world embracing these radical new parenting notions of “I just want you to be happy.” “I will love you regardless of what you choose.” And simply supporting the young in being “who they are.” Interestingly this can be compared to the traditional goal of education, whose root words indicate it is about “bringing out what is inside.” Secondly, one needs to look at how these choices of who to be are differently configured at the various stages of life and in relation to its multitudinous exigencies. For indeed these requirements change as one traverses the stations of the life cycle and as one encounters distinctive life events, such as unexpected deaths and divorces, tragedies and the calamities that befall one, fickle fame and unforeseen fortune, and so on. This book addresses that as well.

It has become so much a part of our daily lives, in fact, that we hardly give it any thought anymore. Yet such artistic renderings had a powerful impact on the culture in that they were contrary, were opposite of, the dominant conformism of the times, as exhibited in the WWII Generation as well as in their establishment-oriented Fifties Generation cohorts. These literary and artistic works set the stage for the revolutionary thinking and acting of the next generation to come on the scene, the Sixties Generation. So, again, Terry Gilliam, creator of Brazil, known for his work in Monty Python, depicts a more recent biological experience for humans — a toxic womb here, which is in addition to the unnatural cesarean-type birth mentioned. It fits that this dystopic nightmare of a world as seen in Brazil, reflecting as it does the worst of our modern reality, would be revealing some of its roots as being in the most horrifying and most unnatural of our experiences in the womb and at birth, which are particularly significant in modern times.

He found that natal imagery especially predominates in societies during times of crisis and war, when national purpose and state of affairs are construed as a need to escape or break free from an enclosing and constricting force. He also noted the suffering fetus and the poisonous placenta as sources of these later metaphors and imagery. In fact, in studying the imagery in the national media of various countries he has been able to predict political, social, and economic events such as wars and invasions, recessions, and political downfalls. His work begins to look at the prenatal influences and imprints and how they related to macrocosmic issues of politics, history, social movements, and issues of war and peace.

It seems to be becoming a writer/director’s fad, as increasingly creative ways are being imagined to play it out in scripts. Told You I Didn’t Like Vegetables! Another common variation is when the suffocating item comes out of the person’s mouth. In this frequent scenario, the victim is “infected” with some kind of alien spore which grows inside of him or her and comes thrusting up from inside of the person’s body and out of the mouth, lodging itself there. Often this alien extrusion looks something like a huge asparagus emerging. The perverse sexual aspect of the image also has roots in perinatal, specifically, BPM III experience. This “vegetable” eruption always happens suddenly and climactically, and almost always it results in death. Scenes like this I have observed in the movie “Jacob’s Ladder,” several times on the hit show The X Files, and in many, many other shows.

However, if that does not happen, or to the extent that does not happen, this time in our lives creates in our deepest memories a knowledge of a state of “heaven.” It is harmony, peace, bliss, unity with the mother. My own research has added that it is a time when we retain a connection with Divinity or a higher reality than what we will know ever afterward.1 Which goes to explain the fact we have awareness of our past lives at this time. Furthermore, my own experience, added to research of other prenatal researchers — Frank Lake,2 in particular — reveals there are specific milestones related to this state. For example, the time of connection with the uterine wall, as a blastosphere, a bundle of cells, is a particularly euphoric time. The period of growth in general — from zygote through the embryonic state — is likely to be experienced as a bedrock of innate competence, confidence, and mastery. Risking It All At any rate, the ensuing plot in Joe Versus the Volcano has provocative elements containing cornucopias of meaning. It shows Joe having to decide whether to sacrifice his newly won relationship with his anima ally — that is to say, the heroine, Patricia — for the benefit of an entire — but anonymous — community. This demonstrates that at a progressed level of the spiritual process — that having to do with one’s inter-connection with the larger community of living things, not just one’s personal unconscious — one must risk even one’s newly regained creativity, inner child playfulness, and personal feelings, that is to say, one’s anima. One might even lose one’s confidence, doubt oneself, question oneself, lose one’s self-esteem ... all one’s good “therapy” is threatened ... all the gains one made at earlier, egoic levels, where one gained pride and self-confidence are put at risk. All that one thought one gained in becoming the adult one is might be lost. The better, more integrated Ego, proud even of its gains of self as in incorporating the anima, is more than at risk; it must be let go of. No, in this greater task one will risk suffering again ... and on a deeper level and in a more profound way ... but there is the very real promise that it will at least be more meaningful and more transformative. Thought and Emotion Control After all this controlling of everything and everyone about and now with religion added as a tool, the inner thoughts and emotions of the masses were next to be conquered and wrangled into submission. Inner life was targeted for control to serve toward two ends: For the masters, it was more effective than external control to keep the masses from noticing their enslavement and, in the throes of righteous injustice, rising up against their oppressors. For the oppressed masses it served in their attempts to defend ... even more defensiveness was required now ... against the Pain building up in them from all the assaults on their felicity to date. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 22 Language This motherese and cooing during evolution led eventually to lan- gauge. Certainly the roots of language are in the need for communication around survival while foraging in water. However, with secondary altriciality and the long extra time of mothering, that language ability was facilitated and enhanced. Along the same lines, the intense interaction between mother and child led to extra facility in what we had already been developing in facial expressions for the purpose of communicating. Like language, it is in the mother-infant interaction that particular skill is refined. The uniqueness of this mother-infant time is easy to see when you compare us with other species. For example, think for a moment of the way we normally see a chimp or gorilla baby with its mother. Certainly they interact. Definitely they will occasionally play. How- ever, to a much greater degree, what you observe is a detached attitude of the mother with little to no eye-to-eye contact. That makes sense, when you think of it. For the babies being more mature when chimps and gorillas are born, they are past that time of excessive dependency required of humans. That means that chimps and gorillas can much more take care of themselves, even to the point that they do not need to be held but can cling to the mother’s fur. It follows that extra motherly attention is not necessary.
