We’re not done yet. Suprahumanly Constituted Realities Okay, then, let us look at the antipode of that end point, newly seen to be individually constituted realities. On the other end of the continuum, the one we were indicating as biologically constituted realities, we can see that it extends beyond where we thought it ended as well. How, you say? Well, as I said, biologically constituted realities are those realities shared by a species, some of which are shared only by that species and some are shared to varying degrees, but not to every other species. Well, the category, species, also, is not absolute. (I see, a couple of you already were thinking this. Good for you!) There are certainly realities that are unique to entire groups of species that have important qualities in common. We see that the categorization of species itself is not absolute. For we can easily draw a line around groups of species and create other entities, which for all we know create their own “constituted” realities.

Falls from Grace and other devolutional models of consciousness postulate that during life and over time, beginning at conception, we actually are reduced in consciousness and awareness — not increased in it — and it corresponds to a “brain as reducing valve” theory of consciousness.1

Our Knowledge Is Useful, Not Revelatory Our combined efforts in psychology, physics, biology, and anthropology have led us to an impasse. He was the first to mention actual relivings of birth, in which verifiably accurate memories of birth were recovered. He agreed with Rank on many points, but he stressed the origins of consciousness and of trauma being in the prenatal period. He likened birth to death, as he explained that is the way the prenate experiences the drastic change involved in birth; and he claimed that our memory of that death-birth experience is what accounts for our fear of death as adults. A related interest of his is the one for which he is most remembered. He researched paranormal phenomena, including ghosts and poltergeists, and his conclusions are significant. You will see how his views presaged my own, when I discuss my work around “A Primal Perspective on Spirituality” (1985), in a little bit.

THE TAO OF FUNNY GOD, MATRIARCHY, AND LUNAR THEOLOGIES Page 59 Coinciding with this, they cling to one fiction of positive thinking, applicable to the inner self, and another, for the outside world, that law and order can be imposed from without; one can “clean up the streets” by moving the desperate out of one’s sight; the messiness of Nature can be covered up by asphalt and lawns and anything remaining strangled to death with Roundup and Weed-B- Gon; and so on. Underlying these beliefs is the assumption that were it not for bad guys and evil ones ... or dirty, smelly, buggy, slimy, and disgusting Nature ... life would (and should) be “happily ever after.” Suffering is not a corrective in life ... an aspect of learning ... it is some foreign element inserted into the plan of God. Since it cannot be of God, there must be a devil doing it. The body and Nature are ceded to Satan as well, putting one at odds and at war with oneself and one’s environment. One is not to learn from one’s “sins” but to have them atoned for and removed by an outside force ... a special emissary of the Divine ... a son of God? ... well that would be nice. Healing and wisdom do not arise from within, catalyzed by the exigencies of life, they are imposed from without: Priests and physicians, boys in blue and judges and soldiers are among the many authorities responsible for dispelling darkness in one’s life and upon whom one is dependent. Life would be heaven if they would, once and for all, just win!

There Are an Infinite Number of Worlds It should be supremely clear by now, especially among those of us with a transcultural or anthropological familiarity — wherein we are made distinctly aware of the truth-shrouding nature of ethnocentrism — that any serious attempt at discerning truth is not compatible with any variety of self-serving or egocentric agenda, regardless how invisible it might be to us or how unconscious it might be held. And anthropocentrism — the idea that our species, alone, has the inside track, superior to all creation, on perceiving Reality — is such a self- aggrandizing notion. Thus, it is just as essential to throw off the overweening species- centric intellectual baggage of our Judeo-Christian tradition ... which posits “man” as the ruler over nature and as the summit of created species ... as it is essential to strive to drop our ethnocentric blinders. Indeed, making this attempt to view from a neutral, Archimedean, non-anthropocentric “window,” it follows logically that the probabilities are enormous that there are, in fact, other beings, unperceivable entities, unknown and unimaginable realities, and other and different senses ... and, yes, as one new physics proposition puts it, an infinite number of “worlds.” 1. Culture is collective psychology, in a sense. It is the obverse of Jung’s collective unconscious, for it is what is known in a culture, not unknown or unconscious. It could be said that culture is the collective consciousness, viewed in its widest possible way and including all possible elements of a culture, of a group. Following that? Okay, then, we can see that this end of the continuum, which we were calling culturally constituted realities, really goes further out from its supposed end point to individually constituted realities. These are realities that are unique to an individual and can only be understood within the context of that individual, and when encountered outside of that individual they are likely to be either misunderstood or not seen at all. For those of you following this, we can see that such personal “cultures,” if you will, comprised of individually constructed realities, are different, individual to individual, and that some of those cultural elements are shared widely, while some of those individuals have personal cultures with elements that are so unique and unshared that we have a special term for those individuals. Lake began his investigation of re-experience in 1954. Like Stanislav Grof, he did this using LSD, initially, in the psycholytic therapy that was being developed at that time to facilitate therapeutic abreaction. Later he, again like Grof, developed a nondrug modality to accomplish the same thing. His method of “primal therapy” employed a type of fast breathing — again, like Grof’s later technique — to access theta-wave brain levels, which are levels of consciousness that he saw as crucial to accessing and integrating these memories. His thirty-year research led him to the realization of the importance of ever earlier experience. Thus his earlier stress on the importance of birth gave way to his later emphasis on the first trimester in 1981 (Tight Corners in Pastoral Counselling) and in 1982 (The First Trimester). He stressed the maternal-fetal distress syndrome, beginning at around implantation, as a major time of trauma. He also described a blastocystic stage of relative bliss just prior to that. EXPERIENCE IS DIVINITY Page 38 We will see shortly that means that the way we come into the world — our conception, womb life, and birth — create the foundations upon which all our other perceptions are built, and these being unique to humans mean that humans will be the only species seeing the world exactly the way we do. Further, while focusing on our biology as a basis for understanding what is fundamental about humanness, we are able to compare cultures in relation to that biology, though not in any other way. What we will see this means is that while we cannot compare cultures for the most part — this is called cultural relativity — we can compare them in terms of certain things all cultures share which have to do with the fact that all humans have the same kind of body and biological history: An example of that would be the way cultures deal with birth, specifically the pain of it.

On the other hand, solar theologies divide the world in two — into darkness and light, which are irreconcilable. The world is comprised of the sacred and the profane. Indeed, earthly existence is not just deluded, it is seen as corrupt and foul, even at times evil, in its nature. The only real good or light is separate from it, transcendent, is a heaven with no elements of the veil of darkness that is existence on Earth. Solar theologies therefore seek to repress all darkness within, and they struggle to eliminate and destroy all the darkness and discomforts of life without ... to bring their deluded idea of heaven to earth. They try to live in a world without darkness or shadows, one only of light ... thus a solar one, a daytime one. Their milky white heavens are without contrast ... and boring. Their earths are despised and polluted, tortured and raped to extract their resources, with as little importance to them as a garbage dump, for “in the sweet bye and bye” the Earth will be tossed aside as easily as a Dixie cup after one has drunk up. We have no way of knowing even whether or not we are in the same “space” at the same “time” ... the quotation marks because space and time are sensorally determined in our species’ unique biological way ... as other unperceivable beings, even sentient ones — though with what senses, again, we do not know. The Mythological-Archetypal Veil I have a different take on it, however. I do not dispute that some of their view is true. I really do not know the ontological status of these birth-like mythological and archetypal symbols. Nonetheless, I view the actual events of one’s life as having strong determination on the way one views and interprets everything that comes after them. That would include these transpersonal and archetypal realities as being at least shaped, if not caused, by our early experiences. My difference lies in two things: One, that these events shape or they configure our religious and spiritual understandings, especially our re- ligious ones, is what I elaborate upon, especially in this book and the three following it. However, I do not know the extent to which these events create or originate these transpersonal realities. Yet, in view of the findings brought out in my works, Planetmates (2014) and Prodigal Human (2016) — which detail the way humans evolved (devolved) the peculiar kind of birth we suffer from, which is radically distinct from all of Nature — it is curious to think what it might mean for these events, specifically resonating with our unique birth experiences, to have an existence independent of humans.
