Other examples of this element of human features pushing through membranes has individuals completely covered and suffocated in membrane-like elastic sheets from which they cannot escape and in which they appear agonized and struggling. A good example of this was in a scene from “Fire In the Sky” that was shown repeatedly on TV to hype the movie when it came out. Even the invention and use of straitjackets shows our preoccupation with the perinatal, especially as concerns our mental health or well-being. For the message there is that if you “get out of control” you will be put back in a place where you will be forced to comply and will have to learn to deal, as all the rest of us do, with the “existential fact” of needing to conform to the dictates of an overwhelming, dominating, and pervasive other world.

He was the first to mention actual relivings of birth, in which verifiably accurate memories of birth were recovered. He agreed with Rank on many points, but he stressed the origins of consciousness and of trauma being in the prenatal period. He likened birth to death, as he explained that is the way the prenate experiences the drastic change involved in birth; and he claimed that our memory of that death-birth experience is what accounts for our fear of death as adults. A related interest of his is the one for which he is most remembered. He researched paranormal phenomena, including ghosts and poltergeists, and his conclusions are significant. You will see how his views presaged my own, when I discuss my work around “A Primal Perspective on Spirituality” (1985), in a little bit.

Chimps are promiscuous and the fathers are not involved at all in the care of the young. Being non- monogamous as well as promiscuous, for one thing, paternity is not known. Some other mammals, such as wolves, pair off for life; and the males are protective and caring of the young, as the mothers are, but the paternity is known. They essentially have family units. Not so for our more closely related mammal planetmates. However, all these factors of sociability, monogamy, division of labor, and many other changes that came with infant helplessness made it so natural selection would favor those of us who mated for life, were monogamous, and had male assistance for the mother at and around the times of its roles of mothering. Thus, families. So, culture is born in the helplessness of the human infant.

If They Took Away Your Memory, How Would You Know? It wasn’t just me that saw this crash coming. For I found mentors in the market, who I picked because they also knew we were headed for collapse, and who even got laughed at and ridiculed publicly on TV for espousing these views. Still, I found these few not afraid to look squarely at the fundamentals, who were also not Republican cheerleaders propping up a Bush economy of giveaways to those not needing it. The market crashed, and we saw the many sheeple “supply-side” traders and “experts,” who had been in bed with that Administration and represented the special interests, suddenly realize that Bush could not keep the party going endlessly ... any more than Reagan could. Previously, I had watched as these same Republican-speaking mouthpieces for the rich and for the economics of greed had become over time the only voices being heard. Now, suddenly shocked that there were limitations on their thievery of the masses, these Bush- league players could be seen running for the exits like a bunch of cockroaches when the light is turned on. — it is curious to think what it might mean for these events, specifically resonating with our unique birth experiences, to have an existence independent of humans. While this might mean that they are rooted in a kind of collective unconscious that exists prior to and independent of any individual’s experience, still, that collective unconscious is humanly derived; it is distinctly and only human. In which case, we might wonder about the components of any Reality separate from the human: That is to say, what it is that might be true for humans as well as all other beings in existence, the other planetmates, any life forms on other planets or in other dimensions. Lake began his investigation of re-experience in 1954. Like Stanislav Grof, he did this using LSD, initially, in the psycholytic therapy that was being developed at that time to facilitate therapeutic abreaction. Later he, again like Grof, developed a nondrug modality to accomplish the same thing. His method of “primal therapy” employed a type of fast breathing — again, like Grof’s later technique — to access theta-wave brain levels, which are levels of consciousness that he saw as crucial to accessing and integrating these memories. His thirty-year research led him to the realization of the importance of ever earlier experience. Thus his earlier stress on the importance of birth gave way to his later emphasis on the first trimester in 1981 (Tight Corners in Pastoral Counselling) and in 1982 (The First Trimester). He stressed the maternal-fetal distress syndrome, beginning at around implantation, as a major time of trauma. He also described a blastocystic stage of relative bliss just prior to that. He becomes engaged in a desperate need to get out. Interestingly, the fan — the source of comfort in the rhino (womb) — stops working after a while. This is exactly analogous to the way, when we are fetuses, the nurturing elements of the mother’s womb “turn off,” in the last stage of gestation, making the womb quite an uncomfortable place indeed. We see him pushing his face against the elastic, membrane surface of the rhino’s posterior in a way graphically suggesting perinatal emergence. However, scientists and the educated public are not supposed to be like that. It is our job to be looking squarely into the face of these forces of denial and potential apocalypse and to be seeking to understand the human condition and human psychology in light of them. It is our duty then to inform the rest of us about what we see so that we might have a chance of reversing our self-destructive tendencies. Whether the educated public and the multitude of scholars actually are fulfilling their mission in these times is debatable. Regardless, my thesis is that when we do this, when we look foursquare into the face of the global crisis and its accompanying denial, we find that these unprecedented global factors contribute to a unique and unprec- edented human condition and psychology. Just prior to his death in the early eighties, he wrote a culmination of his thirty-year investigation into pre- and perinatal influence in two works titled Tight Corners in Pastoral Counselling and The First Trimester. In these works he goes beyond his other works (for example, 1966) in placing the roots of all later experience, and in particular, distress, at the first three months of physical existence. Ventura Out of the Womb A good example of this occurs in the movie, “Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, When Nature Calls.” In the Ace Ventura movie, Jim Carrey emerges from inside a mechanical rhino with virtually all birth elements evident. Economics to Piss on You I pondered, is it funny, or horrible, that I had been making money hand over fist as I kept shorting the market, buying only puts, having fully expected this crash ever since Bush had put in his tax-cuts-for- the-rich policy in his first year of office?3 I expected this crash to come near the end of the W’s second term, like had happened to Reagan who had employed the same asinine throw-money-at-the-rich policy. Both presided over huge transfers upward to the already “filthy rich.” They did this fully aware that these folks would not spend it to create jobs, but instead would buy yachts and — one big rage of the Reagan era — expensive art, which they bid through the roof, making headlines in those days, as one art object after another would break a new record. At the time, we all thought: “Great idea, Ron baby. Now you just tell me how money locked up in art will somehow create jobs and tinkle down on the poor?” PLANETMATES: THE GREAT REVEAL Page 8

Clearly, with our planet on the brink of worldwide ecocide, and our species permitting an odd hara- kiri of itself — for no reason other than being truly demented about the major things of life, like survival — there is something awry in who we have become. How else do we explain our modern materialistic and consumer-oriented style of being that would value drinking out of plastic bottles, even as it contributes to the deaths of our children? How did we become “suicidal ape”?3 Indeed we find there are factors arising of our evolution that have compelled us to turn on our own existence. Furthermore, those devel- opments have determined our status as the philosophical ape, forever uncertain of our status in Nature, our role in the Universal scheme, and the optimal activities of human life. Our fall from grace has made us varied, confused, and trying to figure it out, as well as humanicidal. Yet we were not always that way. We were planetmates once, too, and we participated in a natural not cultural stream of events. However, from that Edenal time there was a step-by-step descent from that state of grace till we arrive at our situation of industrial civilization today. There were developments that increased our split from Nature. It happened over time, gradually, imperceptibly. This supposed evolution, actually a devolution, is related to birth pain ... indeed, they are all direct results of birth trauma.
