The movie plays on the element of weightlessness. It even provides a pivotal scene where Dr. Ryan Stone, played by Sandra Bullock, is seen floating peacefully in fetal position, slowly turning within bright light, surrounded by a circle. The scene was acknowledged to be a nod to the scene in Stanley Kubrick’s 20001, by the way, of the fetal, new star, floating in space; so that’s significant. Some of the floating scenes in Gravity were filmed underwater, to achieve that effect of complete weightlessness, peace, and balance.

Everywhere you look in film and art, you see the prenatal and perinatal matrices. Just tonight I was watching, again, the 2009 movie with Nicholas Cage, Knowing. In it, our world comes to an end, in a cataclysm that kills everything and everyone. That is not the significant part. What is, is that two children, a boy and girl, are saved and taken to another planet to begin human life again. And what is that planet like? Well, it is beautiful, bright, and perfect ... completely natural with golden fields of grass ... and in the center of it, what the children are shown running toward at the end of the movie, is this magnificent, solitary, silvery shiny tree, another World Tree, much like the one in Avatar. Placenta again, you see. This scene is a rather clear depiction of a BPM I state beginning the world all over again, with two children, symbolizing the ovum and the…

— it is curious to think what it might mean for these events, specifically resonating with our unique birth experiences, to have an existence independent of humans. While this might mean that they are rooted in a kind of collective unconscious that exists prior to and independent of any individual’s experience, still, that collective unconscious is humanly derived; it is distinctly and only human.

In which case, we might wonder about the components of any Reality separate from the human: That is to say, what it is that might be true for humans as well as all other beings in existence, the other planetmates, any life forms on other planets or in other dimensions. In that light, in my endeavor here, in peeling back the pre- and perinatal overlays on human experience — even if they are rooted in some overarching reality, independent of any individual events ... like a collective unconscious — I am still aiming for a peek at the reality that exists outside them. It seems to me there is a huge amount to be gained by an attempt at revealing what is Real, what exists, outside the peculiar human perspective on everything that is so taken up, for humans, with our births and prenatal experiences.

The second aspect of my difference with the Grofians’ view lies in that those events that configure our species worldview go all the way back…

…are imagined rising in the air, as if floating up, or my own depiction of transcendence via a Jacob’s Ladder style of transformation of human consciousness. I describe a metaphorical “coming together of heaven and earth” in our near future, using the analogy of people and angels rising to and returning from the sky.6

In Modern Media

That our early life is felt as weightless is also the reason we are enamored of the gravity-less experience in space. Not only does our media replay depictions of space walks and astronauts in floating zero-gravity environ- ments, but we are attracted to and seek to re-experience this. I remember two different reality shows where the participants were rewarded with a weightless experience caused by an aircraft descending from high in the stratosphere at such a speed as to create it.

I am aware that the movie, Gravity, received the Academy Award for best picture in 2013. It was a huge hit that year, capturing our collective imagination for quite a while. Practically the entire movie is set in space in such a gravity-less environment. The movie plays on the element of weightlessness. It even provides a pivotal scene where Dr. Ryan Stone, played by Sandra Bullock, is seen floating peacefully in fetal position, slowly turning within bright light, surrounded by a circle.

…saying that they would not occur except for the birth traumas, and to that they do not agree.

The Mythological-Archetypal Veil

I have a different take on it, however. I do not dispute that some of their view is true. I really do not know the ontological status of these birth-like mythological and archetypal symbols. Nonetheless, I view the actual events of one’s life as having strong determination on the way one views and interprets everything that comes after them. That would include these transpersonal and archetypal realities as being at least shaped, if not caused, by our early experiences.

My difference lies in two things: One, that these events shape or they configure our religious and spiritual understandings, especially our re- ligious ones, is what I elaborate upon, especially in this book and the three following it. However, I do not know the extent to which these events create or originate these transpersonal realities. Yet, in view of the findings brought out in my works, Planetmates (2014) and Prodigal Human (2016) — which detail the way humans evolved (devolved) the peculiar kind of birth we suffer from, which is radically distinct from all of Nature — it is curious to think what it might mean for these events, specifically resonating with our unique birth experiences, to have an existence independent of humans.

No doubt, activities such as gymnastics, flying, and skydiving are reactions to these uncomfortable feelings. Such pastimes are attempts to run away from the discomfort of entrapment and no-exit — which feelings continue to plague us as adults, as we ever re-create that which we did not integrate and “process” at the time of initially experiencing it — which claustrophobic-like feelings superseded and overlaid the earlier bliss state. Thus, we seek to re-create and re-stimulate those earlier blissful feelings in us through adult experiences of weightlessness, swimming, dancing, surfing, hot tubbing. I need to add loving sexuality to that — particularly in its re-stimulating blissful memories of re-union with an Other who is all-accepting, all-embracing, and eminently kind. I need to include also the seduction of the experience of being religiously reborn.5

I cannot leave the topic of floating without pointing to the most obvious and frequent activity of humans to re-create the weightless experience of BPM I — swimming. Being in water simulates the gravity- free state of our earliest life. It is one of the commonest activities of humans. Naturally, in that same category would be bathing.

Even our depictions of release from the constraints of physical existence are viewed through this BPM I veil of blissful weightlessness — whether it is the evangelical Christian idea of “the rapture,” where people…

Seen Grof’s way, mythological events have an a priori standing; a priori meaning they are not reducible to life events such as the traumas of birth. They arise “of themselves” and have an independent or self-contained quality, not a derived one. According to Grof, transpersonal events are not a posteriori events; they do not “come after.” They are not derived from earlier experience. Which is to say, their existence is not dependent upon — let alone, caused by — the early pre- and perinatal experiences they so express.

While some might say we have the mythologies we do because we all have these early experiences and that is why myths are so similar across different individuals and cultures, proponents of Grof’s view would say that our mythologies are not attributable to our early events and that they exist independently of human life. They are seen as archetypes in the Jungian sense of being outside of and prior to human events. Much like Plato’s Forms, or iconic Ideas, they have a kind of prior and greater reality than the realities that emanate from our events as humans. In fact, the term biological materialism has been used by those in Grof’s camp to describe the idea that birth-like mythological and archetypal symbolism and experiences are derived from birth events. Saying they are derived is…

Indeed, that kind of precise and perfect unity with others is what dancers seek and re-create in the choreographed dance routines they do with others. Perfectly synchronized marching routines, as band or military members train to do, fit also into this category. These are all, at base, attempted re-creations of that perfect synergy of one’s actions with a mother’s biological processes and emotional states, which characterizes some of the best of our times in the womb.

It is even better if it defies gravity, as our experience in the womb seemed to do. Gymnastics and break-dancing are perfect re-creations of blissful womb experience. We can move euphorically in three-dimensional space, overcoming the constraints of gravity. This was precisely our experience in early womb life. We both do these activities as well as are fascinated by others performing them because of early memories of perfection and weightlessness.

Plus, we sky-dive. And if we do not, we view with awe and appreciation via the media the videos of the most acrobatic and gravity defying stunts performed in descent by skydivers. We have created machines where we on the ground can force air up strongly enough so we can experience floating in the air above it similar to skydiving.

…influential Veils, distorting our perceptions of reality, still earlier experiences are even more influential. For what happens first lays down the foundation upon which all later prejudices will be constructed.

To this end, several theorists in particular — beginning with Otto Rank as long ago as 1929, with his book The Trauma of Birth, and including Nandor Fodor (1949), Frances Mott (1960, 1964), and Michael Irving (1988), but especially coming out in expansive detail with Stanislav Grof (1970, 1979, 1980, 1985, 1988a, 1993, 1998) — have noted the cross-over of birth experiences and traumas with religious and mythological beliefs and symbols.

Of special relevance is that in Grof’s view they are distinct. That is, pre- and perinatal events are distinct from transpersonal events according to him. Transpersonal in this sense, in line with transpersonal psychology, refers to the spiritual, archetypal, mythological, supernatural, and religious components of experience. Grof’s perspective is that birth events represent a kind of junction spot between the transpersonal and the personal; thus, between the spiritual and the individual aspects of experience, or between the collective unconscious and the personal unconscious, to use Carl Jung’s terminology.

It is understandable that we would create birthdays and bring people to gather around us at birthday parties. Certainly, our births were fraught with discomfort and trauma. But we did make it out. And birthdays and their parties are ways we try to remind ourselves that life is not always the discomfort and struggle of birth (BPM III) or the aloneness and separateness immediately after birth — BPM IV, that’s coming up, also — but can be the blissful love surround of unity with one’s mother as was the case in the early womb state. We try to cover over the struggles and alienation of life — which we are pushed to unconsciously manifest in our lives because of these traumas around the process of coming into the world — with reminders of the most pleasurable time of our lives, our early womb existence, which we intentionally wish to bring about again.

People go to dance halls to surround themselves with writhing flesh in a way that they themselves can still move freely and, well, even acrobatically, they would like to think. We want the freedom of blissful, flawless movement. Perfection and precise movement is sought, along with bliss, for our prenatal experience was of a process of biological exactness; excellent and exquisite beyond anything we would later experience.

For at this point we border on the truly astounding and mind-blowing. All else may be interesting, is no doubt instrumental, is most of it useful; that is, in a practical psychological or spiritual sense. But here is where we “get real.” That phrase will be seen to never have been so true and profound as it is in its applicability here.

This third book of Dance of the Seven Veils pulls to the side the final Veil on Naked Reality. We see the soulular, the No-Form State, the face of Ultimate Divinity. And ... we find ... our Original Face, which is discovered to be part and parcel of all of that. Knowing this thing, one knows everything.

So this is where we will go in those books. We will, like Salome, do a Dance of the Seven Veils and find out what Naked Reality is more likely to be like.

Book Five, Womb with a View

In Human Activities

However, we do not forget this time of contentment, euphoria, and magical expansion of the world. And we try to return to it through many of the actions of our lives: swimming, meditation, and such. We seek out experiences of floating and weightlessness and freedom of movement to counter the feelings of entrapment that came of the stage of suffering in the womb — described in the next two chapters, “Forgetting” and “Hell” — that comes at the end of gestation. At that time we felt confined in flesh, claustrophobic, with no-exit.

Remember that in the early stages of our womb lives, described as BPM I states, we are surrounded by flesh as well, but it is not constricting. It is blissful and euphoric. No doubt we create our parties and festivals out of our desires to re-experience such wonderful, comforting feelings. In these situations and events, one moves freely, with people (flesh) at a comfortable distance. Ideally one wishes to be the “life of the party” — in other words, the reason everyone else is there and the person around whom everything else revolves. For such is the case in the early stages of life inside one’s mother, in general. Everything that was going on at that time, around one’s embryonal and fetal selves, biologically speaking for sure, was about oneself; but more: It was about one’s overall happiness and well-being. As they say, it doesn’t get any better than this.

…volumes and all the prior ideas which — one by one — were used to pry back the boards upon which we stand which unthinkingly create our arbitrary platform within Reality. The culmination and purpose of this entire journey approaches its fruition here.

In this third book of Dance of the Seven Veils, then, we look at the last Veil, which has to do with our peri-conceptional experiences. That is to say, the experiences around conception. Peri-conception extends back to our emergence into Form with the creation of ovum, first, and then sperm. It continues with the actual events of the coming together of ovum and sperm at conception. It passes on into the events of the fertilized egg, the blastosphere, of implantation, and finally, of early embryonal existence. We find the deepest imprints on our human reality here, peri- conceptionally. Hence it is our first, our deepest, our initial Veil across our ultimate identity as Divinity and our experience in the No-Form State.

This Seventh Veil — the first reduction from Cosmic Awareness, the first cookie cutter on the dough of our physical reality — establishes our physical world, in many ways. We find here the creation of duality as perceived in the world, of thing and no-thing, of self and other, of forward and backward. We discover here the philosophical basis of our human reality. These are the things we believe, without any doubt. It will require the removal of all the preceding and overlying Veils to have a chance to grok what is to be gotten here. For at this point we border on the truly astounding and mind-blowing.

We see examples of this feelings constellation — that is, BPM I — coming out in films, as well. The movie, Avatar, is set on another planet, whose environment is a near-perfect depiction of a BPM I state. Remember, this state during early womb life is one of uninterrupted and oceanic bliss, contentment, harmony, which is interrupted by the later stages of pregnancy and, again, when forced to endure a mechanized- technological birth. Everything is there in the movie just as in the womb state: There is a perfect harmony with Nature, including the existence of a World Tree symbolizing the life-giving placenta ... meaning harmony with the Mother, who is the World Mother, a Goddess.

However, BPM I heaven ends. Much like in Avatar where paradise is spoiled by attacking forces, we also in the womb grow bigger and eventually get to the point where we no longer have a sense of free- floating bliss, we feel more and more hemmed in. We feel attacked by an outside world — our mother’s body in the womb and later a mechanized birth ... represented by the military forces and weapons in Avatar. Eventually we feel claustrophobic and no-exit feelings which ends the time of bliss. I will discuss that in the chapter after next, where we look at basic perinatal matrix II, BPM II.

What actually is Naked Reality? Who were you before you were you as you think you are? What is your “original face”? Well that is what we look at in the next book.

Book Four, Dance of the Seven Veils III:

Transpersonal/Peri-Conceptional Psychology, Mythology, and Your Origi- nal Face ... Cellular to Soulular, Veil Seven and Beyond.

In the third book of Dance of the Seven Veils, which is Volume 4 in The Path of Ecstasy Series, I take on the most profound of all human questions, which has to do with what is really really real. What is Reality? That is a question that lies deep at our roots, and deep in our souls.

It is no coincidence its discovery might arise through a consideration of those deepest parts of our selves. Indeed, having removed six overlying Veils upon Reality — Veils which were projected out onto our screens of perception and understanding as a result of prior experience, especially traumatic and deeply affecting ones — this is our best chance to remove the last Veil. That is exactly the purpose of all the preceding pages in these….

…endless possibilities. This is significant, for later experience will have the majority of people feeling fearful of new beginnings. We will see that in the way they are traumatized at birth, so not wanting to achieve again; and in the way after the period of blissful expanse in the womb, in the later stages, it becomes claustrophobic and hellacious, leaving an imprint that growth is dangerous. These are just examples; there are other experiences leading one astray as well.

Whereas if one is lucky or has cleared away enough of the residual primal pain and trauma from one’s beginnings, one can stand upon a more blissful and euphoric foundation. These are aspects of what I call the “joy grids,” which underlie one’s Pain and create our deeper human nature. In this case, one experiences new beginnings as ecstatic. There is a reason that I have labeled this entire series of books, which has been stimulated by the discovery of these underlying joy grids, The Path of Ecstasy Series.

In any case, this example of ecstatic experience at the time of descent through the fallopian tube I can personally liken to my experience of leaving “the nest” and going off to college — which began as one of the happiest and most magical times of my life.

We see examples of this feelings constellation — that is, BPM I — coming out in films, as well. The movie, Avatar, is set on another planet, whose environment is a near-perfect depiction of a BPM I state.

…substratum which gets ever and over again reflected in our basic beliefs, which we conceptualize and narrate in our mythologies.

In terms of the sequence being laid out in Dance of the Seven Veils, the time of birth itself — including the postnatal period, with its graces or horror ... depending — is what I term Veil Four. The time of prenatal malnutrition and our experience of third trimester hell, with its four aspects, the PMEs, comes under the heading of Veil Five. Lastly, the time of, optimally, early blissful womb experience, connection with Divinity, and experience of harmony and buoyant optimism, confidence, and delight is what I call Veil Six.

All of these, whatever their experiential qualities — pleasureful or painful — are Veils. They are films across our comprehension because they are imprints about what Reality is that arises of our unique human experience — either individually or collectively. Thus, being a conse- quence of early, quite variable, quite unique (in comparison to other species) events, they cannot truly be considered accurate about what exists outside the parameters they most definitely inscribe. They comprise hard and fast prejudices about what is True and Real.

So, what is Real, then? What is Reality prior to the events which skewed our understandings of What Is so that It is a particular thing, not any other things. What actually is Naked Reality?

This experience as a growing, cell-multiplying blastosphere and embryo is something like that. This is one of our first, if not the first, experiences of euphoria. That is a euphoria that is only augmented by the joy — happening to a large or small extent, depending — that many of us experience during the blissful womb time. So while much of BPM I, womb experience might be described as happiness, or “oceanic bliss,” this earlier BPM I experience of the early embryo, fetus, and blastosphere can have more of the characteristics of expansive euphoria as compared to passive extreme contentment, also known as bliss.

Another particularly blissful-euphoric time is our experience as the egg cell, the ovum, after it has left the “sisterhood” of the mother’s ovarian sac. A therapist described a hypnotic regression she gave one of her clients: “I suggested that she go to the time of conception. She immediately reported that she was having fun rolling down the fallopian tube. Suddenly she saw little swimmers coming up toward her and then swimming all around her. She laughed and described the spermatozoa all bumping into her and felt one get really strong and attach itself and then enter through the skin of the egg. She began to multiply, feeling joyous and happy....” 4

Descent down the fallopian tube is often ecstatic at the time, and it creates a foundation for experiencing life as euphoric new beginnings with…

One of the major points of the book is that in any growth — spiritual, personal, or psychotherapeutic — the goal is to go through the pain grids, by facing, acknowledging, experiencing, and reliving them, and tapping into the joy grids beneath them. Which “joy grids” I liken to our deeper human nature. This deeper self or personhood is interconnected with and interacting with the Divine — which is a state of beingness that is the experience of that time as well as is a quality of everyday consciousness that embraces one when one reconnects with these repressed experiences in the process of personal growth as an adult.
