FUNNY GOD Page 84 For starters, one might ask, what are the meanings of anima and Divine Feminine, mentioned above. Beyond that, how do they relate to our new understandings of birth and death, the perinatal and the matriarchy, and to the spiritual development of women, as well as men. For many reasons, chief among which is the fact that the Divinity Within, the Divine Feminine, plays a big part in lunar theologies, a funny-god way, and the necessary hero of modern times, it is important to have a clear understanding of its meaning. Since I have been referring to the anima in men here, which, like the Divine Feminine, has feminine characteristics, the need to distinguish and understand the two concepts is at hand. Most importantly, since we are fetching from a traditionally patriarchal motor pool here, in discussing champions, rites of passage, bravery, and valiant deeds, it is imperative to right that imbalance through a focus on women’s actually more important role in this new, more enlightened form of spiritual nobility and heroic activism. THE TAO OF FUNNY GOD, MATRIARCHY, AND LUNAR THEOLOGIES Page 59 Coinciding with this, they cling to one fiction of positive thinking, applicable to the inner self, and another, for the outside world, that law and order can be imposed from without; one can “clean up the streets” by moving the desperate out of one’s sight; the messiness of Nature can be covered up by asphalt and lawns and anything remaining strangled to death with Roundup and Weed-B- Gon; and so on. Underlying these beliefs is the assumption that were it not for bad guys and evil ones ... or dirty, smelly, buggy, slimy, and disgusting Nature ... life would (and should) be “happily ever after.” Suffering is not a corrective in life ... an aspect of learning ... it is some foreign element inserted into the plan of God. Since it cannot be of God, there must be a devil doing it. The body and Nature are ceded to Satan as well, putting one at odds and at war with oneself and one’s environment. One is not to learn from one’s “sins” but to have them atoned for and removed by an outside force ... a special emissary of the Divine ... a son of God? ... well that would be nice. Healing and wisdom do not arise from within, catalyzed by the exigencies of life, they are imposed from without: Priests and physicians, boys in blue and judges and soldiers are among the many authorities responsible for dispelling darkness in one’s life and upon whom one is dependent. Life would be heaven if they would, once and for all, just win!

On the other hand, solar theologies divide the world in two — into darkness and light, which are irreconcilable. The world is comprised of the sacred and the profane. Indeed, earthly existence is not just deluded, it is seen as corrupt and foul, even at times evil, in its nature. The only real good or light is separate from it, transcendent, is a heaven with no elements of the veil of darkness that is existence on Earth. Solar theologies therefore seek to repress all darkness within, and they struggle to eliminate and destroy all the darkness and discomforts of life without ... to bring their deluded idea of heaven to earth. They try to live in a world without darkness or shadows, one only of light ... thus a solar one, a daytime one. Their milky white heavens are without contrast ... and boring. Their earths are despised and polluted, tortured and raped to extract their resources, with as little importance to them as a garbage dump, for “in the sweet bye and bye” the Earth will be tossed aside as easily as a Dixie cup after one has drunk up. For they are on their raft made of luggage, indicating the paltry number of things — physical but also emotional “baggage” — that are required to be taken along on the journey of life, or, more accurately, on the stormy and crooked path to self. It is nighttime, and again, dominating the starlit sky there is a huge image of a moon. More about the meaning of this scene in just a little bit, but for now, let us focus on the meaning of a lunar theology that these two striking scenes are indicating. Lunar Theologies, Solar Theologies What is the meaning of lunar in lunar theology? A lunar theology is not in denial of the darkness of life ... it acknowledges, just like a night scene with a full moon, that life is lived in darkness — of our true selves and the nature of reality — but that it contains a guiding light, a reflection of the Divine (the moon). As humans we find ourselves in a deluded state relative to the Divine, in ignorance and separate, but physical reality is metaphor of the Divine, constantly revealing Itself to us and guiding us hOMe. The Divine is immanent in Nature and ready to reveal Itself to us in any of the moments we will allow It to.

One accepts the “process” as being what is all important. It is not the goal that is crucial, authorities are not needed, one cannot do it for anyone else. It focuses on Divinity as being inherent, which means that one reaches the truth on one’s own, one is healed by surrender not by fee to a professional. One risks societal standing, luxury, salary, even life and limb, and does not slough off responsibility for the evil of the world to some anonymous organization or to some imagined individuals who, one rationalizes, are “higher up” and “more in the know.” One stands up, oneself, for a cause greater than oneself ... one that is truly important, even necessary. One becomes the necessary hero. This is the crooked path to Self. When one embraces the Mystery of life ... when one seeks to learn from its exigencies not focus all one’s energy on dragon slaying, that is, keeping all risk away ... a moonful of new and exciting possibilities are born. One’s life is renewed, and one has a new appreciation for it. THE TAO OF FUNNY GOD, MATRIARCHY, AND LUNAR THEOLOGIES Page 57 Then he finishes with words that say everything, “I forgot ... how BIG!” “Thank you.” “Thank you for my life.” So, this scene is a clue to the lunar theology the movie portrays, but it shows again the rising of awareness of the Divine in all these matriarchal and lunar ways — through observation of Nature (the moon); as a result of experience of life and suffering; arising only when one has surrendered and struggled no more; and occurring when one’s Ego has been stripped down sufficiently by the exigencies of life to be able to let it in (the hero’s emaciated self, the sinking of the luxury yacht). It says that one becomes transformed when one’s Ego has been diminished sufficiently and one can allow the process to have its way totally. One accepts the “process” as being what is all important. It is not the goal that is crucial, authorities are not needed, one cannot do it for anyone else. The situation is depicting the sufferings of life, of course. And the response by the hero, Joe, presages the later one in relation to the volcano. That is, one can do nothing about the situation and must submit ... and simply survive. The self-sacrifice and bravery that will be necessary for the larger challenge is exercised here, as well. Joe takes no water for himself, while he pours mere capfuls of what they have, stretching it out to make it last, into the lips of the unconscious Patricia. Joe is already showing his willingness to suffer himself and put his own body on the line in order to ease the suffering of another. That is what heroes do. The response from the Universe is significant and profound. In the dead of night, the moon rises on the horizon. It is the largest moon imaginable and fills the sky. A beaten and emaciated Joe, after a mighty struggle just to stand, faces the sight in awe with lowered arms in submission. Then he raises his arms in an embrace and acceptance. Finally his legs shaking, he collapses to his knees and crosses his arms before himself in humility. He says, “Dear God, whose name I do not know. Thank you for my life.” FUNNY GOD Page 56

FUNNY GOD Page 56 Lunar theologies know that the goal cannot be known with the mind. They leave themselves open to be led this way and that by fate, in a roundabout and crooked path to self, one in which one is continually taught along the way, learns through experience, and one does not presume to know the mind of God or the exact road the Divine would have one walk ... let alone what the goal will be like. In this lunar theology one embraces the exigencies of life and seeks to learn from them and not deny, repress, and be at war with them. Indeed, whether consciously or not, whether the writers and producers of Joe Versus the Volanco were intentional in this or whether it was just another magical and synchronistic element put in by the creative process, the movie, in several very powerful, moving scenes, labels itself a lunar theology. In one striking sequence, Joe and his beloved, Patricia, are stranded on a raft in the middle of the ocean. Their luxury ship has gone down ... sunk with all its crew and amenities (check out the symbolism in that!). Anyway, many days later they are down to only a tiny amount of water and no food; their skin is burnt from an oppressive sunlight; their lips are parched. Indeed, Patricia is unconscious from the ordeal. Joe is not much better. The situation is depicting the sufferings of life, of course.

In that it is the woman who precipitates the rescue, the girlfriend here is no longer the helpless, needing-to-be-rescued anima or damsel, but represents the Divine Feminine, analogously the mother who comes to one’s rescue in order to be born. No happily ever after for the hero here, yet; the struggle, and story, continues. First, let us be clearer about the feminine aspects of all this. For we will see that, not only are women’s changing roles and increased empowerment revolutionizing our society ... hence, our stories as well; but they point to an epic shift of awareness from where we have been for millennia. Looking at this also clears up a considerable amount of confusion that abounds in psychological, new-age, and spiritual circles about the feminine in men, but also women. The perinatal and the deeper reaches of the unconscious, which we are now accessing and needing to deal with, reveals new understandings. To that we now turn.

The Crooked Path to Self This back-and-forth trajectory of the path toward self is continually revealed in the film as symbolized by the shape of several actual paths trod by the hero (the one going into the factory where Joe worked and the one going up to the top of the volcano), a design on Joe’s wall, and a significantly shaped lightning bolt, which brings down the luxury ship and, in its seeming tragedy, brings about the circumstances that reveal the hero in Joe and lead to his most profound revelations. All three of these depict the exactly same- shaped crooked road. This is an indication that this movie is about a lunar theology, not a solar one. Solar theologies strive for a ladder progression, a step-by-step and linear one, in accordance with mentally understandable stages toward the goal, a consequence of cause and effect, and dictated by the mind. As Alobar, the king, did in leaving his culture, this new hero, this necessary hero, risks losing the rewards of normality; she or he risks losing her friends, her family, even her society and community of origin. One makes this choice to do a different way, to not be anything like that which one opposes; one does it, initially, alone. Risking ostracism, the woman leaves her husband and returns to school to follow her most righteous dreams. Risking jail, even death, the hero stands in front of the tank. One leaves off the paths of one’s fathers ... and mothers ... and puts oneself on the front line ... stands naked in defiance of society’s evil. One refuses to compromise, and one does not cop out. One “can’t go home again,” as Thomas Wolfe phrased it. That makes one solitary ... and alone. But in telling fashion, in order to make the higher “community” sacrifice the anima elements that have been let go of, symbolized by Meg Ryan as the anima damsel, Patricia, end up going with Joe to his chosen fate and are borne up, renewed, along with him. What one has risked is not lost after all, but one does not know that ahead of time.

BPM II, Basic Perinatal Matrix II, is the stage of no-exit prior to birth when the birth contractions have started and there is a need to escape and be born, or die. That is the situation of the hero, Sam, directly before the rescue attempt, while he is immobilized in the chair, feeling hopeless and facing death, in fact, actually pleading ... begging! ... for his life. This expresses the no-exit despair we experience as prenates, where we are trapped, cannot move, are not getting enough oxygen, feel helpless, and feel certain we are going to die. What we wish for, but seems impossible here, is to breathe freer (get more oxygen through the umbilical cord), to be “free” (able to move around and be comfortable), to have power and be able to fight back (might manifest in society as fetish about owning guns), and to live. Following BPM II is BPM III, and this is the actual struggle to be born. There is hope. While still feeling that death is imminent, we make the effort to be born and feel we have a chance to succeed and thus live. In the movie this is the part where Sam is freed, cesarean or not, and takes up the fight himself, fending off and, with his allies, shooting numerous attackers in trying to escape. Risking It All At any rate, the ensuing plot in Joe Versus the Volcano has provocative elements containing cornucopias of meaning. It shows Joe having to decide whether to sacrifice his newly won relationship with his anima ally — that is to say, the heroine, Patricia — for the benefit of an entire — but anonymous — community. This demonstrates that at a progressed level of the spiritual process — that having to do with one’s inter-connection with the larger community of living things, not just one’s personal unconscious — one must risk even one’s newly regained creativity, inner child playfulness, and personal feelings, that is to say, one’s anima. One might even lose one’s confidence, doubt oneself, question oneself, lose one’s self-esteem ... all one’s good “therapy” is threatened ... all the gains one made at earlier, egoic levels, where one gained pride and self-confidence are put at risk. All that one thought one gained in becoming the adult one is might be lost. The better, more integrated Ego, proud even of its gains of self as in incorporating the anima, is more than at risk; it must be let go of. No, in this greater task one will risk suffering again ... and on a deeper level and in a more profound way ... but there is the very real promise that it will at least be more meaningful and more transformative. COMMON MADNESS AND THE DIVINE FEMININE Page 81 …poisoning and torture — in modern times, since this womb experience of the fetus is affected by the food and drugs the mother takes in and the emotions she experiences while carrying the child. With our times seeing manyfold increases of toxic chemicals from both our environment (287 industrial pollutants were found in the umbilical cords of newborn babies, in a recent study, of which two- thirds of them are known to be carcinogenic and toxic to the brain5) and from our current rampant pharmaceutical usage, this movie reflects the more likely womb of modern prenates. So, again, Terry Gilliam, creator of Brazil, known for his work in Monty Python, depicts a more recent biological experience for humans — a toxic womb here, which is in addition to the unnatural cesarean-type birth mentioned. It fits that this dystopic nightmare of a world as seen in Brazil, reflecting as it does the worst of our modern reality, would be revealing some of its roots as being in the most horrifying and most unnatural of our experiences in the womb and at birth, which are particularly significant in modern times.

Risking It All At any rate, the ensuing plot in Joe Versus the Volcano has provocative elements containing cornucopias of meaning. It shows Joe having to decide whether to sacrifice his newly won relationship with his anima ally — that is to say, the heroine, Patricia — for the benefit of an entire — but anonymous — community. This demonstrates that at a progressed level of the spiritual process — that having to do with one’s inter-connection with the larger community of living things, not just one’s personal unconscious — one must risk even one’s newly regained creativity, inner child playfulness, and personal feelings, that is to say, one’s anima. One might even lose one’s confidence, doubt oneself, question oneself, lose one’s self-esteem ... all one’s good “therapy” is threatened ... all the gains one made at earlier, egoic levels, where one gained pride and self-confidence are put at risk. All that one thought one gained in becoming the adult one is might be lost. The better, more integrated Ego, proud even of its gains of self as in incorporating the anima, is more than at risk; it must be let go of. No, in this greater task one will risk suffering again ... and on a deeper level and in a more profound way ... but there is the very real promise that it will at least be more meaningful and more transformative. Womb (dome) has become more like birth canal or cesarean opening. And from that opening above him, rappelling on ropes, descend the cavalry. On a related note, the rescuers descending on ropes ... relief via ropes or cords ... is symbolic of the neonate’s wishes for life-saving oxygen to be coming more abundantly through the umbilical cord. As we will see, being trapped and feeling tortured and suffocated because of a reduced flow of oxygen-carrying blood through the umbilical cord is a near universal human experience and is a major aspect of human’s uniquely-configured prenatal and birth experiences, out of which the singular human personality and human worldview emanate.3 At any rate, being in the dome is symbolic of the stage in the birth process before birth when one is in the womb; it is termed by Grof, Basic Perinatal Matrix I or BPM I. While Sam is actually being tortured to the edge of death, which happens while he is strapped into a chair much like one from a dentist’s office, in which he squirms and struggles to move, which is set in the center of a huge, dome-like, womb-like enclosure; in his imagination only (we find out later) his allies burst in to free him. The dome, we only then discover (or is it wishful thinking? Some kind of deus ... or obstetrician ... ex machina?), is open at the top and the supposed “terrorist” team, who he is wrongly accused of working with, descends on ropes in order to free him. I will forgo, for now, the issue of the acceleration of cesarean birthing procedures in modern times and its contribution to a degrading societal consciousness and global mood, as I have touched on that elsewhere in a more suitable context.2 However I need at least to point out the unmistakable cesarean element in this “birth” (this rescue) through an opening magically appearing in the dome (womb). Where the dome was dimly lit and seemed completely enclosed, suddenly there are lights shining from above onto the face of a startled and squinting Sam. Looking up, he sees a huge hole at the top of the dome, the building now appearing to have more of a shape of the inside of a nuclear cooling tower. Womb (dome) has become more like birth canal or cesarean opening. And from that opening above him, rappelling on ropes, descend the cavalry.

Similarly, the many horror films ending in a burning inferno, which typically brings down the building or house and often, tellingly, sinks below the ground in doing so, are depicting an eruption of perinatal material — horror that is too pervasive to be avoided. The Ends and the Means Meanwhile, in Joe Versus the Volcano, the ending is clearer about the properly creative response. In the request to Joe — which he accepts, by the way— to jump into the volcano, which would keep it from erupting and thus save the people of the island, Joe is asked to give up his life to save an entire community, not merely to risk his life to rescue his anima, his feeling self (his feminine, creative, intuitive, playful, loving, humorous, emotional self). He is asked to separate himself and his intentions from any possibility of success. Like the Turkish and Occupy protesters, it is the style, the mode, the means of action, not the ends, which are all important.
