#MalalaYousafzai, an advocate of education for girls and women, was brutally attacked by the #Pakistani #Taliban on #ThisDayInHistory in 2012. As the 15 year old rode the bus home following an exam., a gunman shot her and two other girls. Amazingly, she survived and persisted.

#Dutch soldiers for the #DutchEastIndiaCompany (#VOC) committed the #BataviaMassacre on the site of what eventually became #Jakarta on #ThisDayInHistory in 1740. They killed at least 10,000 ethnic #Chinese residents between this date and the 22nd, with just over 600 surviving it.

Having gone to fight in the #BolivianInsurgency in 1966, #CheGuevara was captured on #ThisDayInHistory in 1967. Already wounded, he surrendered and gambled on being valuable as a hostage. He was instead beaten for his defiance, and was summarily executed by Bolivia the next day.

Any so-called #socialist state banning worker organization is not socialist. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1982 #Poland banned #Solidarity and all other #unions. #MartialLaw had been declared there in December 1981, making Poland into an explicitly anti-socialist #MilitaryDictatorship.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1973, an Israeli counterattack during the #YomKippurWar was repulsed by #Egyptian troops at their #Sinai bridgeheads. The #SAM batteries downed numerous #IDF jets and a series of battles cost Israel more than 150 #tanks, with dozens destroyed in minutes.

Shortly after the start of the 2001 #AfghanWar, the British War Cabinet on #ThisDayInHistory considered targeting television stations in #Afghanistan and killing #journalists. Despite being informed that this was a literal #WarCrime, the cabinet debated the proposal seriously.

On this day in history in 1728, American Founding Father Caesar Rodney was born. Rodney represented Delaware in the the Second Continental Congress where he signed the Declaration of Independence.

#MatthewShepard, a gay student at the #UniversityOfWyoming, was savagely beaten and left tied to a wooden fence post on #ThisDayInHistory in 1998. He died five days later. His death brought renewed attention to the perennial violence used against the #LGBTQIA community in the US.

In celebration of human difference & #neurodivergence, I'll note that on #ThisDayInHistory the United States lost one of the best poets it had yet produced when #EdgarAllanPoe died in #Baltimore at the age of 40. His work remains powerfully appealing for many inclined to #poetry.

On this day in history in 1727, American Founding Father William Samuel Johnson was born.

The #ProclamationLine was set in a royal edict on #ThisDayInHistory in 1763 by #KingGeorgeIII. This set aside all lands in the future USA acquired from France in the #SevenYearsWar for the #Indigenous people, angering rich land speculators in the British North American colonies.

#JoeHill was born #JoelEmmanuelHägglund in Gävle, #Sweden, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1879. On migrating to the US in 1902 he became a songwriter for the #IndustrialWorkersOfTheWorld, penning many of the #IWW's most famous revolutionary #union songs. He was martyred by Utah in 1915.

but practical use had to wait 20 years for lasers, cheap computing, and the rectangular UPC.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1944, #Sonderkommando (Jewish slaves working #GasChambers and crematoria) at #AuschwitzBirkenau, revolted. They destroyed the No.4 crematorium, and almost 500 were killed fighting the #Nazi SS. Women from the attached camp who supplied gunpowder were shot.
