October 7, 1998 – Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, is kidnapped a few minutes after midnight by two young adults. He was brutally beaten. At 12:30 AM on October 7, Shepard was tied to a fence and left there.

He dies on October 12.
