The originator of a way of interpretation that he calls natalism, he has brought together a host of artistic and artifactual images from a wide range of time periods and cultures which relate, with an astonishing degree of accuracy, to actual pre- and perinatal events. In particular, he has traced the universal serpent/dragon motifs and mythology to birth and sperm experience, noting, among other things, that the serpent/dragon shape represents the birth canal or tunnel, that the fire-spewing characteristics of dragons relate to consuming pain, and that the constricting characteristics of snakes correspond to the constriction of the birth canal.

For reasons that will become clearer as we proceed, I would say there is indeed reason to assert that levels of complexity relate to levels of awareness.

Biological Transcendence It follows that to understand truth beyond our biologically constituted realities ... to be able to get an idea of what reality might be for entities and life in general and not just humans, we would need to stand inside a paradigm of understanding that would apply to all species — both known and unknown. It is often the place of beginnings, of stories, the “once upon a times” that bookend the “happily ever afters” occurring at the end of stories. Snow White’s early life, living with the dwarves and in harmony with the planetmates of Nature is a depiction of this heavenly BPM I. So also, as I mentioned earlier, is the representation of the planet Pandora, which is the setting of the movie, Avatar. For it is a depiction, just like in the Garden of Eden, where things are wonderfully harmonious, peaceful, and significantly, events unfold in close proximity to a World Tree, which represents the mother, and more specifically the all-nurturing placenta. Notice in all these that the peace is disrupted. Which points to the painful aspects of birth arising over time. In the case of Avatar, a fight ensues, which is the most common representation of the end of the harmonious time and is the most accurate in reflecting what happens to us in the womb, with the onset of the birth struggle. In this category of film and literature we also have Alice going through a looking glass to enter Wonderland; Dorothy and Toto in The Wizard of Oz being transported — in their house, naturally, for all enclosures are womb symbols — to another realm, the Emerald City; and the back of the wardrobe opening up into the other land of Narnia in the classic children’s series by C. S. Lewis titled, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. To start with, a house — being an enclosure in which humans protect, nurture, and take care of themselves once born into the world — is perhaps the most prevalent womb symbol that exists. It is right up there in importance with caves, oceans, swallowing beasts — especially beasts of the ocean like whales (Jonah), sharks (Jaws), and octopi or giant squids.

It results, also, in a disposition where we don’t care about the truth. So we fall into saying things instead to hurt, get revenge, to get back at, regardless the facts, the unfairness, the injustice. It motivates us to say untruths to get advantage, to disable our competitors, as we see so blatantly with Trump. Yet in all of us it drives a tendency to hide from the evils we commit, which only enslaves us further in the hiding of them. It makes us jealous of those who find happiness or pleasure in their lives and impels us to lash out at them and make them suffer the way we, on the inside, know that we do. All this it does, and so much more. Thanatos is why there are always Republicans or something like them — Pharisees, Puritans, Inquisitors. Our death drive is the reason there are times in which these annihilating and sabotaging folks hold sway — stifling, life- and creativity-averse, stagnant and little-changing times: the Middle Ages, for example. The time in America since 1980, when America — confronted with so much change and pushed to grow personally more than it ever had, and regardless of the obvious gains in having better lives that came of that struggle — out of that death wish wanted to return to the Fifties, and still does. Going back and forth in the decades since then, we find ourselves, between progress (Eros) and this image of a golden age of the Fifties (Thanatos), painted by Ronald Reagan, George W.
