On that day
an insistent breeze
came from the west
and gathered in its bite
the siren's song
of far dark oceans
It sung of moon guided ships
and the endless horizon
In the teeth of the moment
I felt it
the hard urge to follow
the tugging of the tide
a kiss of salt upon my lips
as a run away wind
called my name

As tempting as it was to keep driving north to Canada while in Minnesota yesterday, it’s good to be home

What I Was Worth

Bury me under the roots with the letters I never could finish.
Lay at my shoulder the cardigan, ragged with holes in its elbows.
Give me the library card with its promise of somewhere to wander.
Leave me the photograph blurred by the thumb of the person who loved me.

Bring me the stone that I carried for luck through the worst of the winter.
Nothing of silver or gold could have kept me from wanting to linger.
Spare me the sermons and give me the key to my house with its garden.
All of the things that I leave are the proof I was here for a moment.
