As tempting as it was to keep driving north to Canada while in Minnesota yesterday, it’s good to be homeļæ¼

What I Was Worth

Bury me under the roots with the letters I never could finish.
Lay at my shoulder the cardigan, ragged with holes in its elbows.
Give me the library card with its promise of somewhere to wander.
Leave me the photograph blurred by the thumb of the person who loved me.

Bring me the stone that I carried for luck through the worst of the winter.
Nothing of silver or gold could have kept me from wanting to linger.
Spare me the sermons and give me the key to my house with its garden.
All of the things that I leave are the proof I was here for a moment.

Foreign Birds

The birds arrived with foreign songs.
We left them crumbs beside the gate.
They sang until the bread grew mold.
We thought they missed their home.

One learned my mother’s little cough.
One whistled through my father’s teeth.
I found them perched upon his spade.
We thought they missed their home.

Last night, a fledgling tapped the glass
and used my childhood name.

I let it in.
It knew which room was hers.

Renovations

I stripped the paper from the walls today
And found the names I’d buried out of sight;
Each careful coat had kept the past at bay,
Until the cracks began to speak at night.

I took a hammer to the bolted door
And let the daylight settle on the grain;
The house had held its breath through every war,
Now even dust could learn to dance again.

I will not build a room without a seam,
Nor make a shrine of what I have outgrown;
Let crooked windows interrupt the dream
That I must turn my heart to polished stone.

Some things must fall before the walls can stand;
I draw the plans. The hammer’s in my hand.

A Hedge Catechism Who goes out after dark? A girl with a lantern. Who follows her home? A fox with her mother’s voice. What does the fox ask? ā€œMay I come inside?ā€ What does the girl answer? ā€œMother has a key.ā€ Who turns it in the lock? Something with a tail.

FIRE SALE

One kitchen table, smoke-stained.
Four chairs, three survivors.
A box of photographs
with no faces left.

Everything must go,
the sign says.

As if the fire
hadn’t seen to that.

UNPREDICTABLE EFFECTS I moved one chair three inches to the left. By morning, the moon had missed its exit. A woman in Ohio remembered a childhood that wasn’t hers. Somewhere, a dog began barking at a house not yet built. I apologized and put the chair back. That was worse. ~ cmj
