Text of poem on background of a photograph of blue sky with scattered clouds:

My Trusty Steed

Galloping beneath blue skies,
you toss your mane against the flies.
You race the wind and will not lose,
upon hooves shod with shiny shoes,
running rings around rainbows,
flying faster than your foes.
You seldom shy and rarely rear
unless an arrow should appear.
I brush your coat and buff your horn
and ride no horse, but unicorn.

Thanks as always to @thetoypress.bsky.social for a new #wordoftheweek. Here’s my poem based on the prompt.

The Barn Hand
(for Kara)
She had three socks and a star
The beautiful bay who nibbled
Baby carrots and lumps of sugar
From the palm of my hand
On muggy summer afternoons—
I could have stayed there forever
But there were stalls to muck
And fresh bedding to lay
Before the stable master returned

Horse

He coughed and neighed and said ‘No, no,
I'm too small for this course!’
She replied, ‘Here, have a throat lozenge.
you're just a little hoarse.’

Text of poem in Comic Sans font on sky-blue background:

I wish I were a superhero

I wish I were a superhero,
above, and soaring high,
or swooping down to save the day—
no one would call me shy.

I wish I were a superhero,
then I could disappear
and not be told to raise my voice
“so everyone can hear.”

I wish I were a superhero,
clever, quick, and fast.
My presentation would be done,
and I’d sit down—at last!

There’s a new word of the week from @thetoypress.bsky.social . The word is “super” Here’s my poem!
#kidlit #poetry #writingforchildren

It’s a bird! It’s a plane!

Sometimes
I like to imagine
I’m the Lingít Superman
Powered by fry bread
And fresh g̱áax'w

Just think!
If I could soar
Through the blue sky
Like the mighty Kal-El
I’d be a basketball star

Never afraid
To take my shot
As the clock ticks down
And the whole game
Is on the line

I’d never
Get picked last
Or sit on the bench
But I might end up with
My photo in the paper

Of course
I wouldn’t brag
When you’re a hero
You just let your work
Talk for you

The artist of this painting is the French contemporary painter Patricia Radix-Perrier.

Her signature style heavily features warm ochre-yellow clothing, texturized palette knife techniques, and emotive, semi-abstract figures of women and children interacting dynamically against cool-toned backgrounds.

The image shows an expressive, semi-abstract painting of an older child or figure in a mustard-yellow dress holding the hands of a smaller child who is lifted and swinging joyfully above a reflective surface.

Poem with purple text on a nature photo described below:

Text of poem:

Boreal words to define
An evergreen tree is a pine.
To prowl like a fox is vulpine.
To howl like a wolf is lupine,
but also a flower: lupine,
a sweet mountain bloom—that’s alpine.

–Anne M. Lipton

Photo: Purple lupine flowers, green pines, and green deciduous trees with a distant blue mountain range under a pale blue sky dotted by a couple of small white clouds.

Furry fox with friends at play,
having fun on a sunny day
They laughed beneath
the green oak trees
and feasted on honey
from the bees!

🖼️ Katrina Sarap / KaterinaArtsFR

The artist behind this piece is Katarina Sarap, who creates and shares cozy, fairy-tale children's art under the brand name Katarina Arts (also operating as KaterinaArtsFR or KaterinaArts on storefronts). Her signature logo banner is faintly visible on the right side of the wooden fence in the illustration.

This is a cozy, charming illustration of woodland animals—including a badger, fox, rabbit, and hedgehog—enjoying a tea party together in front of a treehouse door

I LOVED this week’s #wordoftheweek from @thetoypress.bsky.social . Here’s my poem.

#writingforchildren #poetry #kidlit

The Fox

She looks like a bit of flame
Creeping her way through
The tall summer grasses
To the edge of the creek
Where she will gaze longingly
At the flock of water fowl
Dabbling on the far bank
Dreaming of a feast
So close, and yet, so far away

This week I would like to present a representation of the inside of my brain in poem form.

#WordOfTheWeek #Muddle #WritingCommunity #WritingForChildren #PoetryForChildren #PoetryCommunity

Boat

I got into a muddle in the middle of a puddle
when the pedal of my model boat from Lidl most befuddled me
I waddled to the puddle where I meddled with the pedal
but though straddling the puddle for to fiddle with the model boat
I found it not a doddle of a riddle in the puddle
and no medal would I model just for twiddling the pedal
so I waddled from the muddle in the middle of the puddle
left my model boat from Lidl with its pedal and skedaddled
