A medium-sized bird (36–42 cm / 14–17 in long) perches upright on a leafy branch against a soft, out-of-focus background. It features chestnut-brown wings, a streaked brown and white chest, a long dark tail, a prominent white stripe above its sharp red eye, and a slightly hooked black beak. Clue: Look closely above my red eye for a striking white stripe and listen for my low, bubbling call echoing across the thickets, savannas, and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula! Fun Fact: Unlike most of its kind, which are notorious nest parasites, this species builds its own messy, dome-shaped nest and raises its own chicks—with the male doing most of the egg incubation and chick feeding!
