What bird is this? ๐Ÿค” (See alt text for clue and photo credit) ๐ŸŒ #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds ๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿง๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆฉ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿชฟ๐Ÿฆš

A medium-sized bird (36โ€“42 cm / 14โ€“17 in long) perches upright on a leafy branch against a soft, out-of-focus background. It features chestnut-brown wings, a streaked brown and white chest, a long dark tail, a prominent white stripe above its sharp red eye, and a slightly hooked black beak.

Clue: Look closely above my red eye for a striking white stripe and listen for my low, bubbling call echoing across the thickets, savannas, and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula!

Fun Fact: Unlike most of its kind, which are notorious nest parasites, this species builds its own messy, dome-shaped nest and raises its own chicksโ€”with the male doing most of the egg incubation and chick feeding!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A striking medium-to-large male bird (100โ€“120 cm / 39โ€“47 in long) perched on a grey rock. It displays vibrant iridescent green scales on its back, a brilliant golden-yellow and red rump, and a white hood with fine black striped patterns fanning around its head, along with long, barred tail feathers extending dramatically behind it.

Clue: Named after the wife of a Governor-General of India, this high-altitude Asian traveler is famous for its shimmering cape and dramatic, extra-long tail.

Fun Fact: Despite the male's vibrant, eye-catching plumage, these birds are surprisingly elusive in the wild, spending most of their time hiding in dense bamboo thickets in the mountain forests of southwestern China and Myanmar.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A photo of a large seabird (1โ€“1.4 m / 3โ€“4.5 ft long) standing atop a wooden post with its wings partially outstretched. The bird features a white head, a long orange-tinged bill, and dark gray feathered plumage on its body against a soft, warm-toned background.

Clue: Famous for steep plunge-dives along coastal shores, this grand seabird carries a spacious pouch built for catching fish!

Fun Fact: This species is one of only two of its kind that forage by diving directly into the water from heights as high as 18 m (60 ft), using its expandable throat pouch like a net to scoop up fish and water.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

What bird is this? ๐Ÿค” (See alt text for clue) ๐ŸŒ #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds ๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿง๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆฉ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿชฟ๐Ÿฆš

A small, plump songbird (approx. 12โ€“13.5 cm / 5โ€“5.5 in long) perches on a thin branch against a blurred green foliage background. The bird features a crisp white belly, dark black upperparts, dark eyes, a small pointed black beak, and a distinct white patch above its forehead.

Clue: I am a tiny migratory bird known for catching insects mid-air. True to my common name, I wear a bold pattern of black and white, and my male plumage sports a distinct white forehead patch.

Fun Fact: Once a male establishes a nest site and attracts a female to lay eggs, he will often fly off to set up a second nest nearby to court a second female, leaving the first female to do much of the early incubation work alone.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

What bird is this? ๐Ÿค” (See alt text for clue) ๐ŸŒŽ #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds ๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿง๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆฉ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿชฟ๐Ÿฆš

A small, vibrant green songbird (11.5โ€“13 cm / 4.5โ€“5.1 in long) perched on a thin tree branch amid broad green leaves. It features a bright yellow crown, black markings around its eye and bill, black-streaked green wings, and subtle bluish-gray feet.

Clue: This jewel-toned songbird from the humid cloud forests of Central and South America gets its common name from a brilliant, precious gemstone.

Fun Fact: Despite its scientific name this bird isn't native to the U.S. state of Floridaโ€”florida comes from the Latin word for "flowery" or "blooming," referring to its bright, lush plumage!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A relatively large, charcoal-black bird (55โ€“60 cm / 22โ€“24 in long) perched upside down near the top of a bare wooden branch against a clear blue sky. It features a dramatic spiky crest, a massive hooked beak, and a bright red bare patch on its cheek.

Clue: With my smoky black plumage, striking crest, and crimson cheek patch, I am Australia's largest of my kindโ€”known for my musical talent with sticks!

Fun Fact: This bird is one of the only non-human animals known to use manufactured tools rhythmicallyโ€”males break off sturdy sticks or seed pods to drum against hollow trees, creating a unique beat to attract a mate.

Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1)

A large bird of prey (1.9โ€“2.4 m / 6.2โ€“7.9 ft wingspan) standing amidst tall green grass. It features a striking white head and breast, a yellow face and beak with a dark hook, and deep chestnut-brown plumage on its body and wings against a softly blurred natural background.

Clue: Known as the "voice of Africa," this majestic raptor is a master angler whose echoing call is a signature sound of Sub-Saharan waterways.

Fun Fact: Their feet are lined with sharp structures called spiricules to help them grip slippery, wriggling fish straight out of the water!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A photo of a relatively large bird (25โ€“27 cm / approx. 10 in long) perching on a wooden branch. It features a large, bright red beak, a deep brown head and neck, vibrant royal-blue plumage on its belly, and turquoise wing feathers.

Clue: This island-dwelling bird is named after its Indonesian home and shares a famous family name with a royal angler.

Fun fact: Instead of building a nest in tree branches, it digs long horizontal tunnelsโ€”sometimes up to a meter deepโ€”into sunlit soil walls and earthen riverbanks to lay its eggs.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

A close-up photo of a relatively large bird (43โ€“56 cm / 17โ€“22 in long) resting on the back of a white outdoor chair. It features a white face and breast, a slender black crest of curled feathers on top of its head, vibrant blue upper back and wing plumage, and a thin black band wrapped around its upper chest.

Clue: Look for a striking crest and a long, graceful tailโ€”this vocal Central American bird is a colourful member of the crow and jay family!

Fun Fact: These birds are cooperative breeders with a unique social system: female offspring often stay with their parents to help incubate eggs and feed future broods.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)
