Arctic terns chase summer from one end of the planet to the other. Every year, they migrate from their northern breeding grounds to Antarctica. A round-trip migration can be 80,000 kilometres, one of the longest journeys on Earth.
Happy #WorldMigratoryBirdDay

White-faced Ibises. These birds really seem to be expanding their range northwards. Once a rarity in far-southern Alberta, they’re now pretty common at least as far north as the Edmonton area #worldmigratorybirdday

#WorldMigratoryBirdDay 🐦
Most migratory species travel at night due to cooler air & fewer predators, relying on the moon & stars to guide them.

Light pollution is a threat to birds because artificial light disrupts navigation, drains their energy & lures them into dangerous urban environments.

1/ 50 years of @webs-gsmp.bsky.social 🥳 Here's what we've found out with the help of our amazing volunteers ⬇️🦆 #WorldMigratoryBirdDay

@webs-gsmp.bsky.social is coordinated by @btobirds.bsky.social in partnership with RSPB Science & JNCC

A male Pintail on water showing its long creamy coloured neck, with brown head, dark grey bill, and a long black tail. Wording above reads: 50 years of the WeBS Wetland Bird Survey! Here's what volunteers have helped us discover ... The WeBS logo features top right of the image.

Nature's been playing a flawless game of survival for millennia, but our constant industrial noise is destroying the board. Today we must fight to protect the players who are simply trying to navigate the wreckage and find their way home. #NationalChessDay #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #Rebellation

It's #WorldMigratoryBirdDay in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean! 🪶 Some raptors fly about 6,000 miles each way. Others stay close to home all year. Meet the homebodies, globetrotters, and wildcards in our new blog: https://bit.ly/4yG1Ee9

Today is World Migratory Bird Day. Wetlands, lakes & rivers are crucial habitat for many migratory birds, like these African sacred ibises in the Tana River Delta, Kenya. #WBMD2026 #WorldMigratoryBirdDay

Leave, leave your well-loved nest,
Late swallow, and fly away.
Here is no rest
For hollowing heart and wearying wing…

The Late Swallow
by Edwin Muir

Leave, leave your well-loved nest,
Late swallow, and fly away.
Here is no rest
For hollowing heart and wearying wing.
Your comrades all have flown
To seek their southern paradise
Across the great earth’s downward sloping side,
And you are alone.
Why should you cling
Still to the swiftly ageing narrowing day?
Prepare;
Shake your pinions long untried
That now must bear you there where you would be
Through all the heavens of ice;
Till falling down the homing air
You light and perch upon the radiant tree.

I want answers, but there are only the wild geese
Calling, high in the almost-dark, bearing south,
And me, stopped short, clutching a bag of groceries
On the doorstep of my not-quite home…

Susan Mansfield
BEARING SOUTH

I want answers, but there are only the wild geese
Calling, high in the almost-dark, bearing south,
And me, stopped short, clutching a bag of groceries
On the doorstep of my not-quite home.
I feel the calm of their inner compass
And wonder if this is what we mean by certainty,
A deft arrowhead of wingbeats
In tune with the turning wind, the changing light,
A geography in their feathery breasts
Older than the names of continents.
A journey without thought of parting or arrival,
Only the press of forward motion,
The urgency and risk of it all,
A brief touch-down in stubble fields, then on,
The pulse of fellow flyers in the slipstream
And the clear voices calling in the dark:
I am here, I am alive,
I am here, I am alive.

Celebrating the wonderful and diverse species that migrate, in this case up and down the Mississippi Flyway.
I moved from Nottingham, England to southeast Minnesota almost 15 yrs ago and have been amazed at the wonderful sights I've been treated to.

Twice a year, millions of birds take to the skies—and their incredible migrations can even show up on weather radar.

This #WorldMigratoryBirdDay, help give them a safer journey by turning off lights at night, planting native species, and paying attention to the birds passing through your backyard.

@unep.orgOct 10, 2026, 1:00 PM

Migratory birds make incredible journeys every year, but habitat loss, pollution and climate change are pushing many into decline.
