Environmental nay-sayers are arguing that we “fixed” this problem, as part of their stance that we need not worry about what we are doing to the planet. But that is not true. One report, on CNN, had it that the ozone had been depleted by forty percent in the previous two months alone! The reporter announcing it seemed shaken. It was like watching someone be suddenly made aware that developments were unfolding, behind the smoke screen of media denial, that was going to have life-and- death pertinency to the lives of herself and her loved ones. Certainly, this is not the kind of thing normally put on her desk to announce on air. Sure enough, we were not to hear anything more about it. That, along with so much else we never are told about that is directly looming over us. Nor need I elaborate on the nuclear threat — whether precipitated by terrorists, rogue nations, or accident. We know, but do not want to, of the possibility of any one or more of these mad actors employing weapons of mass destruction, possibly leading to ever-mounting rounds of retaliation with eventually no one left standing. Relatedly we push out of our minds the threat of other kinds of weapons — such as biological weapons — getting out of control and creating a worldwide epidemic or holocaust.

He noted a tendency for growth and healing to occur in a progressive way through these levels. The sensory band is the level of expanded sensory awareness and is usually initially encountered by participants. The biographical band is the realm of the personal unconscious wherein unintegrated and traumatic memories and material from childhood and one’s personal history are retrieved, often relived, and integrated. The perinatal level of experience usually follows after dealing with the biographical material and involves the remembering, re-experiencing, and integrating of material that is related to the time prior to and surrounding birth. Imprints: The Lifelong Effects of the Birth Experience, published in 1983, among other things places birth as the determining factor in creating basic personality constructs, called sympathetic and parasympathetic, which roughly coincide with the more common terms introversion and extroversion. Janov’s work is more empirical and neurophysiologically rooted than most in the field, and this was especially true of this work. Nevertheless, while the book is recognized in the field, Janov and his work have not gotten anywhere near the respect and attention they deserve. His therapy involving having deep feeling experiences, primaling, of all kinds — his primal therapy, involving the re-experience of anger, sadness, grief, childhood, early life, birth, and painful events from all other times in life and involving the re- experience and release of all possible feelings — is reduced to and ridiculed as “primal scream therapy,” from the provocative title of his first book. Thus, both lay and professional folk have participated in a slander of his therapy, giving the inaccurate impression — purposely, for some, no doubt — that his therapy involves merely eliciting screams in his clients.

The situation is depicting the sufferings of life, of course. And the response by the hero, Joe, presages the later one in relation to the volcano. That is, one can do nothing about the situation and must submit ... and simply survive. The self-sacrifice and bravery that will be necessary for the larger challenge is exercised here, as well. Joe takes no water for himself, while he pours mere capfuls of what they have, stretching it out to make it last, into the lips of the unconscious Patricia. Joe is already showing his willingness to suffer himself and put his own body on the line in order to ease the suffering of another. That is what heroes do. The response from the Universe is significant and profound. In the dead of night, the moon rises on the horizon. It is the largest moon imaginable and fills the sky. A beaten and emaciated Joe, after a mighty struggle just to stand, faces the sight in awe with lowered arms in submission. Then he raises his arms in an embrace and acceptance. Culture The point is that this intensive mother-infant interaction is the foun- dation for the extra sociability required of humans and for culture, with all its components of language, need for communication, and structure in our social groups. So, because of secondary altriciality ... that extra time of depend- ency as infants ... which is caused by prematurity, which is necessitated by the size of our skulls and brains, which size is the result of the overwhelming birth trauma of humans with its conse- quent need to be repressed in order for humans to function, which was caused because we began standing up and so altered the arrangement of our pelvic bones, we developed both language as well as the need for human interaction, the sociability, which is the basis for culture as well as human empathy. Regarding empathy, humans have been fitted to survive in groups where there is extensive communication of needs and desires. While other mammals care about the pain of their offspring and seek to mollify them and are capable of grieving, we are the only species who developed the ability to empathize to such an extent that we are the only ones to have psychotherapists. For while humans apparently can’t see what‘s coming, Mister Ed shows off quite an animal’s instinctive knowledge. He sees clearly: far into the past and into the immediate future. And he’s fed up and won’t be shut up, taking especially the “filthy rich” to task. Apparently animals know a lot more about humans than we do about ourselves. While our comeuppance is not pretty (that horse has quite the mouth on him — you’d never have gotten that from the show! and a rather gruesome imagination), it is not all humans he condemns. Amazingly, in addition to migratory animals like sea turtles, this includes fruit flies and even some forms of bacteria. Some snakes can detect infrared light. Bees can detect ultraviolet light. As for plants, you thought them dumb? What scientists have discovered is that, amazingly, some have a sensitivity to touch that is finer and more sophisticated as what we have with our fingers; that they communicate with each other, including about a possible threat from a new pest and overcrowding and other matters. They have hormones similar to our own. That not enough, they have vision, all of them. What is the world as experienced by a plant? On what basis do we say that our world is better or closer to apprehending reality than theirs? Furthermore, what of species whose senses, as nearly as we can determine with our own, are vastly different from ours, such as a mantis shrimp, which have sixteen different types of color receptive cones compared to our mere three. What of species with less in number than ours? What is the “world” of an earthworm like? What, that of an amoeba? Real world, please step forward.

PREFACE Page xx …worthy of one’s efforts and attention in life. Similarly, it shines a light on proper and harmful ingredients in child-caring, so it would be invaluable to any parent. Most of the material in the foregoing has been included in other works. Specifically, they are Prodigal Human, Planetmates, Psychology of Apocalypse, Dance of the Seven Veils I, and the forthcoming (expected sometime in 2021) Back to the Garden. I have focused on this topic somewhat in Wounded Deer and Centaurs, as well, where I related it to the changing personality structures coming of postmodern times and their relation to pre- and perinatal influences, the environmental crisis, and activism. Others of my books have traveled through this terrain at times, too. Nonetheless, it seemed a good idea to bring all this material together around this theme of Identity, to re-slant them, and to see what would come of it. The issue of who to be is one of the primary concerns of humans; it is vitally important to address it now and at this time in history with the stakes so high and the need to bring forth a new vision of who to be in line with what we need if we are to survive patriarchy, environmental collapse, and the rising worldwide fascism coming up as a direct reaction to the fear come of multiculturalism, identity loss, and identity confusion.

The dispersants themselves are toxic. But the much bigger crime was to make sure the even more toxic oil — which depletes the oxygen in the water and thus creates the dead zones — would be spread far and wide throughout the global water. Good for BP shares looking like they could fix it; bad for survival of oxygen-breathers on Earth. Thus, BP’s egregiously criminal move was the equivalent of sweeping dirt under the rug to make it go away. Unfortunately, there is no “away” in which it can “go.” Therefore we have, in this incident alone, precipitated greatly the dying off of the life of the oceans — the oxygen-producing plankton — and, hence, the basis of all life on this planet. To this ravaging of the lungs of the planet add worldwide runaway deforestation, already in full swing. I am practically choking as I think how we then stink up the air with industrial emissions and auto exhausts. To the dangers bringing on our demise we need to add globally increasing air pollution. Environmentally also, we have the greenhouse effect — global climate change or warming — the depletion of the ozone layer, and so on. PRE/PERINATAL PSYCHOLOGY AND PHENOMENON OF RE-EXPERIENCE Page 21 Later Theorists — Breathwork Stanislav Grof Breathwork, LSD, Birth and Prenatal, Myth and Archetype, Spiritual and Consciousness A pioneer in this prenatal area is Stanislav Grof (1976, 1980, 1985, 1990, to name a few). His many works, providing a framework for conceptualizing perinatal and transpersonal experiences, are a profound and useful starting point for an investigation into this area. In his use of LSD beginning in 1956 for psychotherapy, called psycholytic therapy, he discovered four levels of experience of the unconscious: the sensory, the biographical, the perinatal, and the transpersonal. A Call to Know Instead However, this new evidence and new paradigm are not at all at odds, let alone at war with — as much of the constructs of fundamentalist theology are — our traditional scientific ways or findings. For, similar to the way in which the earth is flat in the particular environs of one’s daily life, and for a considerable distance surrounding, the Newtonian-Cartesian paradigm likewise has its limited usefulness. But if we are to get moving on our species’s continuing adventure into discovering the nature of reality, we must acknowledge its limitations. What bodes against this happening is an incredible, Jupiterian weight of egoic, economic, and time investment in the old (N-C) paradigm that pushes most people to insist upon its ultimate validity. Historically, this has been the unfortunate fate of every emergent paradigm facing the entrenched one. Decades and even centuries have often been required while the new worldview has been put “on hold” until entire, invested generations have left the scene ... totally regardless of the quality, quantity, or indisputability of the new evidence (Kuhn, 1970). In fact, she considers the cutting of the umbilical cord to be central in her theory of trauma, calling it the crisis umbilicus, and echoes Fodor in claiming that it is the true origin of the castration fears made so much of in psychoanalysis. FUNNY GOD Page 56 Lunar theologies know that the goal cannot be known with the mind. They leave themselves open to be led this way and that by fate, in a roundabout and crooked path to self, one in which one is continually taught along the way, learns through experience, and one does not presume to know the mind of God or the exact road the Divine would have one walk ... let alone what the goal will be like. In this lunar theology one embraces the exigencies of life and seeks to learn from them and not deny, repress, and be at war with them. Indeed, whether consciously or not, whether the writers and producers of Joe Versus the Volanco were intentional in this or whether it was just another magical and synchronistic element put in by the creative process, the movie, in several very powerful, moving scenes, labels itself a lunar theology. In one striking sequence, Joe and his beloved, Patricia, are stranded on a raft in the middle of the ocean. Their luxury ship has gone down ... sunk with all its crew and amenities (check out the symbolism in that!). Anyway, many days later they are down to only a tiny amount of water and no food; their skin is burnt from an oppressive sunlight; their lips are parched. Indeed, Patricia is unconscious from the ordeal. Joe is not much better. The situation is depicting the sufferings of life, of course.

Thirdly, with the additional load of birth trauma, and trauma from fetal malnutrition, which we will get to next, you can imagine how much more unhappy we are than our cousins. We come into the world weeping and wailing, screaming and turning red and flailing about. Our cousins do not. Hence during that extra time of dependence and even for a while afterward, there are additional emotional needs that human mothers have to take care of that their sister mothers do not have to do. Babies are often in pain; mothers must coo, pacify, hum, rock, and make nice. You can see where this is a considerable prod for even more mother-infant interaction and communication — both verbally, audibly, in the direction of increasing facility in language, and visually, by means of facial cues and body language. Elephants can hear infrasound, as low as one hertz; dolphins as high as one hundred-thousand hertz. Keep in mind that our range is approximately twenty hertz to twenty-thousand hertz. What of the abilities of echolocation that dolphins and bats have. For that matter, what do we make of the ability of fish and amphibious animals, including sharks, bees, dolphins, and platypuses, to sense electrical fields. This is called electroreception. With this sensory ability they are able to sense the electrical impulses of other animals. What is it like living in that world?
