Today, we are hearing the phrase “common sense” over and over again at the Republican Midterm Convention. Republican leaders are describing their political movement, policies, and cultural agenda as a “common sense” revolution. President Trump himself said that Republican policies are about “common sense more than anything else.” But Christians need to remember: common sense is not the Gospel. Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense and later The Age of Reason. Paine was a deist who rejected divine revelation and central Christian claims. Human reason, political philosophy, conservative common sense, and liberal common sense cannot replace the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. Paul wrote, “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” - 1 Corinthians 1:18, KJV. The Gospel is not a “common sense revolution.” The Gospel is that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. TURN NOT TO THE RIGHT HAND NOR TO THE LEFT - Proverbs 4:27 says, “Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.” Scripture repeatedly describes life as a path. There is a way of wisdom and a way of foolishness, a path of righteousness and a path of wickedness. That is why Proverbs 4:26 says, “Ponder the path of thy feet.” Pay attention to where you are walking. Do not blindly follow politicians, preachers, celebrities, movements, traditions, or crowds. Test everything by the Word of God. Deuteronomy 5:32 says, “Ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.” This is not about modern political parties. The Christian path is not Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal. Our standard is God’s Word, and our Lord is Jesus Christ. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Proverbs also commands us, “Remove thy foot from evil.” Do not excuse evil because someone belongs to your political party. Do not defend wickedness because someone claims to be Christian. Romans 12:9 says, “Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” Sometimes following Christ means leaving behind an ideology, a false teacher, hatred, pride, or an idol. Jesus warned that the broad way leads to destruction, while the narrow way leads to life. The question is not how many people are walking a certain road. The question is whether Jesus is leading you there. Colossians 2:6 says, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.” Walk in Christ. Love God. Love your neighbor. Love your enemies. Speak truth. Show mercy. Reject hatred, deception, pride, and idolatry. Do not turn to the right or to the left. Do Not Trust in False Peace I believe Trump is the Antichrist and the boastful little horn described in Daniel 7. Don’t put your spiritual trust in Trump’s peace plans. Put your trust in Jesus Christ alone. Trump’s association with the image of a peacemaker goes back decades. In 1983, photographer William Coupon photographed Trump holding a white dove for Manhattan Inc. Coupon said Trump had expressed a desire to be a peace negotiator between Israelis and Palestinians, so the dove was chosen to symbolize peace. The Guardian Scripture warns, “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them” (1 Thessalonians 5:3, KJV). This does not mean every peace agreement fulfills that prophecy, but Christians should never mistake political diplomacy for the peace and salvation found in Christ. “Put not your trust in princes” (Psalm 146:3, KJV). Test the spirits. Read the Scriptures. Do not make any politician your savior. Only Jesus saves. Woe Unto You Who Desire the Day of the Lord A September 1, 2026 article from The New Republic is titled “JD Vance Says He’s OK With Bringing About the End Times.” The article reports that during his interview with Christian evangelist Bryce Crawford, Vice President JD Vance said he does not know whether we are living in the end times, that he would not be shocked if the Antichrist were already walking among us, and later said that he is trying to do what he believes is God’s work and “if that leads to the end times, OK.” But Scripture gives a sobering warning about desiring the Day of the Lord. “Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light” (Amos 5:18 KJV). The Day of the Lord is not something to casually celebrate, wish for, or speak about bringing about. It is a day of divine judgment.
