If it is designed to find particles, we get particles — in supposedly the same “outside world” ... and regardless of the fact that logically light cannot be both a particle and a wave.2 That is the classic example, of course. The structure of the experiment, designed by the observer, determines what will be found. At base, intent is all- important; it leans us toward “discovering” what we are inclined to see. Now, what is this saying if not just what I have stated in Chapter 1? Is this not the same as saying that we determine ultimately, because of our specific biology, what we sense? That we therein determine the “world” we experience? Culture, Brute Facts, and Culturally Constituted Realities Nevertheless, to some extent our social scientists have yet to get that memo from the hard sciences. For example, in line with Elizabeth Anscombe’s (1958) terminology of brute facts, John Searle (1969) claims a distinction between “brute facts” and “institutional facts.” Anthropologist Roy D’Andrade (1984) elaborates on this and goes on to explain what is meant by brute facts: 2. This is where — at the peri-conceptional experiences — we are looking more at the biologically constituted as opposed to the biocul- turally constituted realities. For, while our experiences in the womb and at birth are much influenced by the mother’s experience in her culture and thus the way those events are construed in her culture, there is not a lot of influence from culture on the way conception experiences unfold. Not a lot, but some. Certainly the health of the father and the mother go into the configuration of these primal events, somewhat, and that is affected by culture. Without doubt, the emotional and psychological characteristics of the parents, which are influenced by culture, influence their very cells, including their sperm and ova. And astonishingly, with test-tube babies and other high-tech, modern interventions into the processes of fertilization and conception going on, suddenly there are huge influences on its processes emanating from culture. We can only wonder, at this point, what kinds of beliefs and notions about the Universe will be had by those who come from such laboratory origins. However, that to the side, there is a great deal of uniformity in our experiences at and around conception. Whereas there is far more variability and cultural input with each advance of time in gestation. Yet the water was also the best place — and oftentimes, along the seashores, the only place — to escape from predators. So in addition to our former way of seeking refuge in the trees, around water we could make our way out into it as well to escape. Most carnivores looking at us as lunch were averse to water. Their loss, our gain. Even better, there were other ... different and more varied ... food sources that came with water. Shorelines, marshlands, and lakesides provided both welcome relief from the increased temperatures as well as served up succulent new foods such as fish, crab, kelp, snails, and items comparable to what we know of as oyster, lobster, and mussels, today. This was in addition to the lush vegetation that grew near water. Whereas most of our species at that time died off, those who had waterfront property thrived. Which, strangely enough, is exactly the opposite of what will happen in the near future with climate change and the sea and ocean levels rising today. There’s a cruel karmic justice for ya.

Oregon Fair Share worked on the issue of fair utility rates, and it won a major victory in restructuring electricity rates around the state so that they no longer favored larger consumers of power and instead benefitted ordinary folks, smaller consumers. This example is instructive for how our unthinking ways of doing things — evolved out of a time vastly different from today — are mechanically undermining our lives; how they could be changed to benefit us given a little thought to the matter; and finally, how citizens can use their strength in numbers to take action to effect such necessary change. So let me elaborate a little on this victory of Oregon Fair Share. These utility rates proposed by Oregon Fair Share — “lifeline rates,” as they are called — are still in effect. Notice, their intent was simple — to effect an environmental advantage for us, while making things better for ordinary folks. And how? By taking away the unfair advantage given almost routinely to the big and the powerful. For the utility rate structure had been set up previously so that the more electricity you used, the lower the rate per kilowatt hour you would pay. Kind of like the way you pay… 2. PART TWO: CULTURE WAR — GENERATIONS Page 100 Drug Effects — LSD In Stanislav Grof’s many works (for example, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, and so on), he concurs with Masters and Houston’s earlier work (1967) that the initial phases of psychedelic experience are predominantly enhanced sensory awareness. It is this type of experience that is usually related to the use of LSD as when the experience is expressed in colorful and swirling images, which has been called psychedelic art. And for many people who used LSD, the experience remained on this level of surface, enhanced sensory awareness. Thus, they could use it for “recreational” purposes. Yet more often with LSD than with pot, people accessed deeper levels of the mind, so that the recollective-analytic — Grof calls it the biographical or psychodynamic level — is reached, as well as levels of consciousness beyond it. These levels were experienced even when the drug was used “recreationally,” because of the relative potency of the drug as compared with marijuana.
