Therefore, we may speculate that a combination of these factors resulted in a compensatory system wherein the fact of increasing brain size is eventually resolved, to date, by a comparatively reduced gestation period accompanied by increased need for child care after birth; increased need for economic dependency overall (both during and after gestation) by the female; increased need for male parental investment in providing for both female and child; and increased birth pain correlating with increased cultural development to offset or mitigate the effects of birth pain. The net effect is a species with prolonged child care; increased tendency toward single-family units; increased brain size; greater cultural elaboration; increased birth pain for the neonate; increased “intelligence”; and increased neurotic and psychotic behavior (thus idiosyncratic and variable behavior) which requires further cultural accommodation, hence cultural elaboration — all evolving simultaneously, interrelating and mutually reinforcing each other. My friend, Sonjamarie Weems, provides an excellent example of how we — humans in general — misinterpret Nature’s ways looking through our cultural biases and filters. She says, "I remember watching this documentary where a mother elephant killed her baby, and through tears I was thinking that was the cruelest thing I had ever seen another animal do. Years later I watched the same documentary and had a different perspective, because I saw that the herd was starving and that the baby was sick. A pride of lions were already tailing the herd. The mother, knowing that the baby would die first, killed it to likely prevent the agonizing death that she knew was coming to it. It’s hard for us to understand how a mother could do that. Think of the movie Titanic ... who wasn’t upset with the 3rd class mother for putting her children to bed in a sinking ship? Makes you think." We find it nearly impossible to see the world as alive, as our ancestors did, regardless what our sciences now tell us. Yet, that is what this book attempts — the returning to the inanimate world of the status of awareness, aliveness, and intention that Western hubris has stolen from it. The reality outside of that, which we think of as matter and as unconscious and unalive, is merely the aspect of our own reality from which we are temporarily cut off. All this is a product of an upsurge of technological innovation in the areas of communication and travel — specifically, telecommunications, electronic media, social media, and modern travel allowing much more contact between individuals of different cultures — which have revolutionized our way of life and made possible a new paradigm of participation in our societies and of personal identity and style. TRANSCENDING WORLDS Page 29 The New Evidence and the New Researchers For unless we do this, unless we keep in mind the limitations of our reality constructions — including our “scientific” ones — we have absolutely no way of understanding certain incorrigible and “biologically useless” facts that intrude upon our “real world” and that are scared into the light of our biological parameters by our scientific rummaging through the bushes. These “useless” side effects of our scientific enterprise may indeed contain the keys to our venturing forth, to at least some small degree, beyond the biological real-world confines of our predecessors. For just as we have seen that standing on a deeper, more encompassing paradigm than the cultural makes transcultural discourse and understanding possible, so also standing on one deeper than the biological may bring trans-biological understanding closer. Following the reasoning I have been presenting, one can speculate that the prospects for bridging the boundaries between species (of both the known and “unknown” variety) as well as between our physical reality and other possible “non-physical” ones are good if we can find a way to look at that physical/biological (Newtonian- Cartesian) level from a deeper grounding in spiritual (or transpersonal) reality. In fact, the evidence from LSD research, some spiritual literature, and various aspects of “new age” phenomena that are washing up on the shore of a variety of disciplines is exactly to that effect.

Risking It All in Running Away The novel, Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins, contains an excellent exploration and understanding of this new approach — the necessity, first and foremost, that one not be part of the evil, in a situation where wrongness blankets everything. The story depicts the hero, Alobar, refusing to go along with the cultural mandates of his society, seen clearly as ridiculous and harmful, especially to him. This is wrongness, all pervasive, for the cultural mindset contains not a shred of an alternative. He, indeed, is a king who, according to tradition, is supposed to kill himself at a certain time. No king has ever before refused this regicide. No one in that culture has ever really considered one could. This situation is not unlike many cultures today and is certainly the mindset of those living in the societies of earlier times. Anthropologists readily observe that the lesser the contact any society and culture has with other ones, the lesser those people living within it know of alternatives to the tenets of their own culture. And the lesser people know of alternatives to anything, including the cultural views of one’s society, the less they are able to conceive options in the decisions of one’s life. And this required continued, ever increasing, growth in neural cells, thus brain size, thus skull size. This increased to the point we are today where in order to fully gestate the brain we ended up with, we would have had to have a twenty-one-month gestation, which we never got. There had to be another way. Human Nature How we solved that problem of getting a big head out of a small opening, at this point in our evolution, was to be born earlier than would be ideal. The ever bigger skulls of neonates led to a tendency for newborns to be born more and more prematurely, for with skulls at smaller sizes these prematures would be able to make it out of the womb. Barely. The larger heads still meant greater pain for mothers as well as the newborns themselves than planetmates in Nature needed to endure.

These primatologists were selective in their picking groups to study; they blew up the significance of the behaviors they witnessed; and they failed to mention behaviors that did not fit their conclusions. So their studies reflected more of the savagery in the human researchers than in the baboon planetmates. As for warring and mass killing, well, no planetmate is doing anything to end life on this planet like humans are at the moment. PREFACE Page xvii …civilization allowed an exploitation of the natural world, which burden earlier humans hardly desired. Until we arrive at pervasive Western views which begin with an assumption of non-life, non-awareness for everything nonhuman, and as we have seen, often for humans other than what “we” are like. From there, awareness is as begrudgingly conceded, requiring mountains of indisputable and hard-to-obtain evidence, as one was attributing awareness to a machine, to an artificial intelligence. Our assumption, from medieval times, is that the world is non- conscious, while humans are ... well, most of us. The history of science in the last hundred years has amounted to a gradual giving back to Nature of its status as aware and conscious that was initially taken away by Western hubris in regard to Nature. So, we have animal rights, the “secret life of plants,” the “secret life of the unborn child,” and so on, in a gradual procession of acknowledgment. The understandings of consciousness and aliveness in the inanimate world — the world of matter — which are the most recent and necessary conclusions, arising from the findings of quantum physics and modern consciousness research, are the most difficult to arrive at. We find it nearly impossible to see the world as alive, as our ancestors did, regardless what our sciences now tell us. I propose that the fundamental reality is consciousness; more correctly, it is experiential. That matter, the physical world, is a projection of human perception thrown upon the formless is the conclusion of quantum physics and our latest consciousness research. Hence all that exists, really, is Experience. Matter is metaphor of that Experience. It is also message of that particular aspect of Experience that we leave out of our awareness in coming into Form, in becoming human. The Material Veil What we put into unconsciousness in the process of coming into Form becomes the physical world we experience as unalive and not conscious, though actually it is pregnant with experiential Divinity — Subjectivity, Feeling, Awareness, Bliss ... and Love. Correspondingly, the essence of the Universe is found in our direct experience of it, which is our essential Divinity.

It has been noted that Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet — in which young lovers are tragically blocked by culture and family from choosing each other — presents a dilemma unique to history. While we have always had at least some say in who we marry or partner with — and more so in our primal times, i.e., when we were nomadic foragers or merely gatherer- hunters — with civilization and its hierarchical societies that choice has been largely determined by the surrounding cultural actors, not oneself. Parents or other societal proxies have most often, with civilization, decided with whom one was to spend one’s adult life. Similarly with career, craft, or occupation, historically children are born into the occupations they will adopt in life. Tinker, tailor, spy, or blacksmith, the boy takes up the craft of the father; the girl takes up the family roles and tasks as modeled by the mother. And by the way, that last crinkle in this is telling: The fact that women, in postmodern times, have taken back the freedom to choose careers and service of their own is an aspect of this explosion of cultural possibilities. What this book does, in particular, even more so than Planetmates and Prodigal Human, is show what is meant by that. Following from concepts first brought out in my work Wounded Deer and Centaurs, this work shows just what sanity looks like in our current situation. “What does sanity look like? This is what sanity looks like!” Amazingly, in the context of a vision of humanity set within Nature, as one planetmate among all the others — as I explained in my Planetmates (2014) — and clearly having gone through a devolution from Nature, not an arrogant transcendence above Nature, allowing us dominion over it ... as I showed in Prodigal Human (2016) ... we are seen to be quite insane. What is sanity then? This book shows that. What we find out is that the opposite of insanity is not normality at all! Clearly, our normal sanity is just another version of insanity ... a kind of group insanity, an insanity of the herd ... like an entire population with the same disease. Birth Relivings, Importance of Birth — Negative Imprints but Positive Effects, Too Another psychoanalyst, and pediatrician as well, Winnicott (1958) also held that birth is remembered and is important. He insisted that the birth trauma is real, but he disagreed with Rank and Fodor that it is always traumatic. He suggested that a normal, nontraumatic, birth has many positive benefits, particularly for ego development. Still, he contended that traumatic birth is permanently etched in memory and leaves a lifetime psychological scar. Winnicott (1958) also suggested the possibility of prenatal trauma. He has been called the first primal therapist in that he described the first birth primals — actual observable relivings of birth — spontaneously occurring by some of his patients during their sessions with him. Thus he was beginning the trend beyond mere talking association or dream analysis as ways of accessing and integrating this material.
