Ok, finishing up here. If you care about what’s going on and think we should wake up, naturally you’re discouraged at how little consciousness there is about an environmental collapse that has already begun. But there is hope at least in certain things. I’ve mentioned the craving for the real and the true. This powerful urge has toppled Bush, birthed an awkward tea-party movement, and shown the light on right-wing idiocy in America. Around the world this explosive force manifests along with its correlates, the needs to express and share this truth in free speech and to have human rights to not be punished for that, as well as to have power for one’s truth to effect one’s life and circumstances, so there is the need for democracy. So it has fueled freedom and independence movements in nearly every country on Earth. In the last year alone, we have seen massive outpourings for human rights and justice in Turkey, Brazil, Romania, and Egypt — where only months ago the largest demonstrations in history were going on. Thus, this cutting represents a supreme threat in being a separation from a total life support system, a major organ, a part of oneself. Yet how cowardly, on the other hand, was it to conform to the draft and do what one was told in helping to precipitate the war and contribute to the slaughter of millions and the ecocide of huge swaths of land? When the engines of society are rolling over human lives, is it more cowardly to refuse to be a part of it, often suffering severe consequences of jail time, approbation, and worse? Further, they never made note of the fact that indigenous people, when they went to war, did very little killing and quite a bit of their “savagery” was merely display. I think we currently have a similar attitude about our planetmates as White Man has had about indigenous peoples historically. We are the savages seeing “savagery” in other people ... and in Nature. I need mention this because I want all readers to know of the second part of the book and not to miss it. I consider it the most profound, inspirational, and relevant part for these times and the people living in it. Still, I have constructed the book to be read front to back. It follows a logical order, creating a rational, thoroughgoing, and comprehensive vision, which the latter parts are that much sweeter by. I think you will miss out a little at least by skipping over the earlier chapters. Whichever of these ways you read it, or some other way — perhaps you are one to have your dessert first and then get your meat and potatoes later, maybe to have dessert then again — my wish for you is that you receive the blessing of reading it with the same joy, and fun, in which I wrote it. PREFACE Page xiv Everywhere you will see the same kinds of clothes, of a most definite Western style — from Indiana to Indonesia, from Kenya to Columbus, Ohio, we see much the same. Particularly this is true in the more populated areas, which means the majority of humans are included in this phenomenon. Shorts, pants, sandals, shoes, socks, suits, dresses are pervasive. Indeed, actual clothes items emanating from the Western wealthy societies are passed down to others around the world. It is not uncommon to see a t-shirt touting the Chicago Bulls on an adolescent in Rwanda, for example. Clothes styles, but also everything else — most notably American and Western media and entertainment — inform and impress themselves upon all the world. This phenomenon would be unimaginable in all earlier societies. Indeed, most earlier societies would not even know of the expanse and multitude of cultures and societies that existed in their time. It is amazing to me that, among all the factors of modern-postmodern civilization that are discussed and are dug into so as to find solutions for and understandings of our current dilemmas, hardly is this factor of a strange coexistence of pervasive multiculturalism set within an overarching monolithic worldwide culture ever noticed or discussed. Yet this cultural framework is not only a novel development in our multi- millions years of human evolution but is a powerful one.

And when one is inside that house, the only sane response is to get out the fire extinguisher, seek to help the ones inside to get free from the flames, to minimize the suffering of others and to save others and oneself, regardless if one succeeds or not. The only sane response is thus heroism. So it is that in a time like this many things need to be re-evaluated. For not only the definition of sanity but even our understanding of heroism requires reconsideration. We have a legacy where, amazingly, heroism is associated with killers, with warriors. Well, the ones on the other side of this societally proclaimed “hero” as destroyer of life do not think this person so “heroic” now, do they? So this also must be revised. In a multicultural world, where not only the environment needs addressing but war needs revising, we see that there are no humans worth killing for the sake of anyone’s government. All are innocent. And warriors are not heroes, they are murderers. Sanctioned murderers, rewarded murderers, heralded murderers, yet murderers nonetheless. So what this leads us to is a new definition of the hero’s cycle. This new hero’s cycle, in its turn, reveals another revision needing to be made. Which is that of the Oedipal and Electra complexes. This book shows why that is so, as well.

Following the reasoning I have been presenting, one can speculate that the prospects for bridging the boundaries between species (of both the known and “unknown” variety) as well as between our physical reality and other possible “non-physical” ones are good if we can find a way to look at that physical/biological (Newtonian- Cartesian) level from a deeper grounding in spiritual (or transpersonal) reality. In fact, the evidence from LSD research, some spiritual literature, and various aspects of “new age” phenomena that are washing up on the shore of a variety of disciplines is exactly to that effect. Indeed, wonder of wonders, finally in our evolution — in this very time of ours — there may be more people who are focusing on those keys to possible biological transcendence than ever before. Additionally, these researchers and seekers are scientifically, empirically, and experientially researching, eliciting, and perceiving many such incorrigible and “useless” phenomena and events. This accessibility of cultural ideas, other than those that one was born into, has profound implications for a postmodern multicultural world — one whose mixing of cultural ideas is increased exponentially through the catalyst of the internet. I believe those implications are hopeful and wonderful and that they set the stage for a better way and an alternative path for a humanity currently heading for an abyss. Indeed, in Robbins’s novel, the ruler, Alobar, does something revolutionary: He runs away; effectively saying “to hell with this bullshit!” This can be seen as parallel to the draft “dodgers” during the Vietnam War in America. They were roundly criticized for being cowardly; and certainly there was self-interest involved in what they did. Yet how cowardly, on the other hand, was it to conform to the draft and do what one was told in helping to precipitate the war and contribute to the slaughter of millions and the ecocide of huge swaths of land? Therefore, we may speculate that a combination of these factors resulted in a compensatory system wherein the fact of increasing brain size is eventually resolved, to date, by a comparatively reduced gestation period accompanied by increased need for child care after birth; increased need for economic dependency overall (both during and after gestation) by the female; increased need for male parental investment in providing for both female and child; and increased birth pain correlating with increased cultural development to offset or mitigate the effects of birth pain. The net effect is a species with prolonged child care; increased tendency toward single-family units; increased brain size; greater cultural elaboration; increased birth pain for the neonate; increased “intelligence”; and increased neurotic and psychotic behavior (thus idiosyncratic and variable behavior) which requires further cultural accommodation, hence cultural elaboration — all evolving simultaneously, interrelating and mutually reinforcing each other. My friend, Sonjamarie Weems, provides an excellent example of how we — humans in general — misinterpret Nature’s ways looking through our cultural biases and filters. She says, "I remember watching this documentary where a mother elephant killed her baby, and through tears I was thinking that was the cruelest thing I had ever seen another animal do. Years later I watched the same documentary and had a different perspective, because I saw that the herd was starving and that the baby was sick. A pride of lions were already tailing the herd. The mother, knowing that the baby would die first, killed it to likely prevent the agonizing death that she knew was coming to it. It’s hard for us to understand how a mother could do that. Think of the movie Titanic ... who wasn’t upset with the 3rd class mother for putting her children to bed in a sinking ship? Makes you think." We find it nearly impossible to see the world as alive, as our ancestors did, regardless what our sciences now tell us. Yet, that is what this book attempts — the returning to the inanimate world of the status of awareness, aliveness, and intention that Western hubris has stolen from it.
