On June 16, 2026, Trump was reported as saying, “Without me, there would be no Israel,” while arguing that his actions had been essential to Israel’s survival. But notice Abram’s attitude after God gave him victory: “And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.” - Genesis 14:20, KJV Abram did not say, I accomplished this by my own greatness. The victory was credited to God. Then Abram refused the king of Sodom’s riches because he did not want that king to be able to say: “I have made Abram rich.” - Genesis 14:23, KJV That is a powerful biblical principle. Abram deliberately refused to let a human ruler take the glory that belonged to God. Political leaders can point to policies, military decisions, diplomacy, or alliances they believe helped another nation. Those historical claims can be examined on their merits. But Christians should be very cautious whenever any man speaks as though an entire nation owes its existence to him. The biblical posture is different: God gets the glory. “Blessed be the most high God.” Do not make a president, king, nation, military, or political movement your savior. Give God the credit, and put your ultimate trust in Jesus Christ.

Political violence should never be celebrated, and Christians should condemn his killing without turning him into a Christian martyr. Biblically, martyrdom is not simply dying violently while being a Christian or political activist. Martyrs suffer because of their testimony concerning Jesus Christ. Stephen was killed while proclaiming Christ. Revelation speaks of believers who overcame “by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony” - Revelation 12:11, KJV. The center of Christian martyrdom is Jesus. If someone dies while associated with a political movement, that does not automatically mean they died for the Gospel.

Today, we are hearing the phrase “common sense” over and over again at the Republican Midterm Convention. Republican leaders are describing their political movement, policies, and cultural agenda as a “common sense” revolution. President Trump himself said that Republican policies are about “common sense more than anything else.” But Christians need to remember: common sense is not the Gospel. Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense and later The Age of Reason. Paine was a deist who rejected divine revelation and central Christian claims. Human reason, political philosophy, conservative common sense, and liberal common sense cannot replace the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. Paul wrote, “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” - 1 Corinthians 1:18, KJV. The Gospel is not a “common sense revolution.” The Gospel is that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. TURN NOT TO THE RIGHT HAND NOR TO THE LEFT - Proverbs 4:27 says, “Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.” Scripture repeatedly describes life as a path. There is a way of wisdom and a way of foolishness, a path of righteousness and a path of wickedness. That is why Proverbs 4:26 says, “Ponder the path of thy feet.” Pay attention to where you are walking. Do not blindly follow politicians, preachers, celebrities, movements, traditions, or crowds. Test everything by the Word of God. Deuteronomy 5:32 says, “Ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.” This is not about modern political parties. The Christian path is not Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal. Our standard is God’s Word, and our Lord is Jesus Christ. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Proverbs also commands us, “Remove thy foot from evil.” Do not excuse evil because someone belongs to your political party. Do not defend wickedness because someone claims to be Christian. Romans 12:9 says, “Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” Sometimes following Christ means leaving behind an ideology, a false teacher, hatred, pride, or an idol. Jesus warned that the broad way leads to destruction, while the narrow way leads to life. The question is not how many people are walking a certain road. The question is whether Jesus is leading you there. Colossians 2:6 says, “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.” Walk in Christ. Love God. Love your neighbor. Love your enemies. Speak truth. Show mercy. Reject hatred, deception, pride, and idolatry. Do not turn to the right or to the left.
