Winnicott’s true self and false self are pretty much the same, with qualifications I will mention. Winnicott saw the true self as the source of creativity, self-confidence, and contented satisfaction in one’s life and the false self as the one we develop to please others, which focuses on compliance and is essentially unreal and “phoney” — focused as it is on satisfying the needs of others in a roundabout, but thoroughly unconscious, way of trying to get one’s own needs filled. These aspects of personhood might also be related to Freud’s earlier postulation of an ego and an id, but they present a thorough reconceptualization of them, with the id emerging as a true self and a source of great value and the ego revealing its unreal roots and its nature as comprised of defenses. This is hugely significant.

In the same way in Nothing but Trouble — another cult classic I will use to make my case — Chevy Chase deals with psychodynamic material and enacts a “dragon slaying” by risking his life to rescue Demi Moore from a giant chopping machine. But, also similarly, this results in the opening up of another level, requiring a completely different — indeed, opposite — response. In Nothing But Trouble, the ending shows the town, after all — not the least affected by the heroic rescue and escape occurring earlier in the movie — sinking into a pervasive and inferno-like underground. The pervasive fire below the earth has much in common with a volcano. In both movies, there is this element of consuming fire that is used to symbolize pain, suffering, and evil that is all-encompassing, comprehensive, and thus unable to be defeated in any normal way, and certainly not by single individuals or small groups of them.

Prematurity was the compromise, the imperfect solution. It meant that, in order to make up for the loss of all that time of maturation in the womb which other species are afforded, we would have a longer time of abject helplessness after birth. This postnatal time of one year, comparable to the time our nearest relatives in Nature spend in the womb, would require careful, focused, and thoroughly all-encompassing care by the mothers or other caregivers. It would be accordingly exhausting and time intensive. This meant that needs of the infant could never be perfectly satisfied. Human mothers now needed also more expertise in child-caring than those in Nature. The knowledge and skill required could never be ideal. Indeed, there would be a gap in what the baby needed and what mothers could provide. Compared to Nature, human infants were needy, difficult, time-consuming, and frustrating in their being so helpless and so long to mature. This would have consequences for child abuse later on, but in the beginning it simply meant human mothers had a much greater and more difficult workload than their sisters in Nature. One’s duty, dharma, mission in life is one’s own, one’s own alone; and it is founded upon what talents and abilities one brings, with all one’s unique- as-a-snowflake set of inherent potentialities combined with what one becomes as confronted by one’s earliest experiences, the life circumstances into which one is born, and the skandhas, or leftover skeins of proclivities, arisen of one’s karma, that one brings forward from what one has been in Infinity. One is not just better off being who one most is in potential; the Infinite opera of the All That Is demands it of us; it is the sweetest and most perfect symphony of all when one adds one’s unique contribution to it. We will either heroically, somehow, save our species and our planet, which will require a change of our human nature unlike anything that has been asked of our species ever before, or we will be witnesses to the elimination of life on this planet in some way that we cannot imagine but can only be horrific in the extreme. So this book is hardly for those who would prefer to keep their heads in the sand and to sleepwalk through life. Certainly, that is part of the reason we could get to this pass. However, it is doubtful that such people, in such deep denial of the signs around them, would be able to hear what I will be bringing into the open here, anyway. Nonetheless, I urge you, if to the contrary you are of the type who would wish to look fiercely at the truth, no matter how horrifying it might be, and to truly witness and be awake in these most fantastic of times, then listen up. The holonomic (combined) model is explanatory and predictive. He has been called the first primal therapist in that he described the first birth primals — actual observable relivings of birth — spontaneously occurring to some of his patients during their sessions with him. Pregnancies would be shorter — nine months — allowing for the economic and survival advantages of that. As for the long period of maturation required for the brain, that would be taken care of by the infant being born more and more premature in order to get the head out at all, regardless that it was still traumatic. Thus, roughly half the brain’s development would occur in the womb under the direction of a process of Nature determined and perfected over the course of millions of years. The other half would happen after birth, under the care and direction of considerably less perfect humans. We are born premature. Relative to virtually all the rest of Nature, whose development of its brain occurs under the aegis of Nature, that is, before birth, we are half-borns. But what remains is something stronger. You see humanity in a new light. It is one that opens a door on a reality greater than the one humans have contrived for their benefit alone. In doing this, you are invited to a return to unity with Nature and a harmonious understanding of our role, perhaps our destiny, in the grand scheme of things. Central to all this is an acknowledgement and understanding of how we have come to set ourselves against Nature and all life on this planet. That is the starting point for a re-visioning of humans in Nature: We must begin with looking at the consequences of our estrangement. Certainly, as in any other process of revelation, seeing clearly allows an opportunity for transformation, whereas staying stuck in counterproductive habits of thought leads only to increasing stagnation of life process and a slow, though feverish, slide to death. These all affect the child in ways at least small, but usually in huge ways. These are aspects of the biocultural veil across perception. To make clear this interplay of biology and culture, let me use an example. In the most egregious instance of cultural influence on our biologically constituted worldview, modern culture has created test tube babies. These are individuals whose early experiences as cells do not even follow the pattern of experience — of sperm traveling to ovum, and so on — that humans have experienced for all our existence and upon which all of what is considered human and human reality has been built. Someday, someone will have to do a study comparing the basic worldviews and mythologies of test-tube conceived humans to those of the rest of us with the normal human beginnings. I predict there will be astonishing differences. However, in the most common example of bioculturally constituted realities emanating from our early lives, every culture determines the way birth will be experienced by the neonate. Thus, in what is the most studied of all biocultural influences, birth has an impact on our lives in vastly different ways depending upon whether it is harsh, or gentle; induced, or spontaneous; and in every other conceivable way. Prenatal and perinatal psychologists from Arthur Janov — with his definitive and ground- breaking book, Imprints (1983) — to Frederick Leboyer (1975), to Thomas Verny (1981), to David Chamberlain (1988) have detailed the way our birth and that our birth affects us ever after in life ... often in ways that are irreversible and untouchable by any and all later experience and… PREFACE. I. APOCALYPSE AND INSANITY Page 8 These Humanicidal Times So this is where we are today. We are the product, the end result of all we have done. And we live our days acting out not just the pushes and pulls of unconscious traumatic memories, and engraved imprints wrought of forgotten events — as I and other psychologists emphasize — but also we find our actions channeled along lines, ways of behaving and things to do and ways to think, going back thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of years. We think of that as a wonderful thing, like we are the top of some heap built up by our forebears for us to enjoy the fruits of their actions. However, we reap the consequences of all their mistakes as well. So it is that we live in unprecedented times. These are days in which the possibility of ending our species in our lifetime, humanicide, even eliminating all life on this planet — ecocide or apocalypse— are very real possibilities. No other time has been like this. And the effect of this possibility of the actual end of days, so to speak — while so horrifying that we are in denial of it and hardly speak it — hangs over us and affects us in ways unique and fantastic.

The combined model explains the phenomena of everyday life, of “normal” science, as well as a huge and increasingly accumulating body of unexplainable data and evidence that is continually erupting out of the “new” natural sciences (in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, anthropology, and psychology, especially transpersonal psychology); out of the human potential phenomenon and new, experiential psychotherapeutic and growth techniques, such as primal therapy and holotropic breathwork; out of psychedelic, consciousness, and brain (especially brain waves) research; out of a decades-long now Western fascination with and intense engagement with Eastern world-view, philosophy, and spiritual practice; and out of an equally long and parallel interest in the paranormal and the occult.
