Furthermore, and slightly different from Janov, the significance of the true and false self for the purposes of the perinatal is that Winnicott saw the origins of the true and false selves as being in early infancy, related to the acquiring of satisfaction of needs in that early state. While Janov traces the beginnings of the split that far back, he stresses the consolidation of the unreal self and the near total split with the real self as occurring at a singular event occurring at the around age of four or five — the primal scene. The primal scene is the significant precipitating event causing one to give up one’s struggle to stay real and to surrender to the unreal. Aside from this difference in emphasis, the two are very much in agreement. However, the qualification I need to make regarding his conceptualizations versus Janov’s is that Winnicott saw value in the false self as somehow retaining the interests of the true self. In this way, he saw the false self — as Freud thought as well for his ego, only even more so — as having a function. This is completely unlike Janov who saw the unreal self as being something completely inauthentic which blocks the expression of the real self and needs to be overthrown, “violently,” as Janov put it. This is where one’s identity is related to one’s dharma, as well. Dharma is a word used in India to mean one’s profound duty in life. And it is where who one is to be coincides with spiritual and ultimate concerns. One has a duty arising out of who one is to be it; that is, to manifest it. A Sanskrit term expresses that notion — atmadharma. It means that one has a dharma, a duty or task or way of being in the world, that is directly related to one’s soulular identity — one’s Atma. In the West we say merely that it is connected to who one uniquely is. This perspective is the spiritual aspect of Identity. For indeed one’s decision of who to be roots us not only in our culture and society, but in the Universe and in relation to one’s inner psychological dynamics and all the metaphysical accouterments of destiny, service, beliefs, and that amorphous thing related to what one needs to do arising out of karmic and personal growth needs and requirements. All these play into what one does and needs to do. At the same time, Jim Morrison of the The Doors was singing, “Break on through to the other side.” A decade later John Lennon intoned “Strange days, indeed ... most peculiar, mama!” That was in the late Seventies. In the Nineties, the group R.E.M. enjoyed enormous success singing, “It’s the end of the world, as we know it”; then, “and I feel fine.” My point is there is something happening here ... something unprecedented in the entire history of this planet, as far as we are able to know. There are powerful factors and influences at work in our world now that have the capacity to change us and our world in radical ways ... for good or ill. My point also, which I will get into, in the part following this one on “Prenatal Matrix of Humanicide,” is that this unprecedented situation, like the “break on through to the other side” lyric indicates, has something to do with birth and prenatal feelings, womb and birth traumas — an emerging prenatal and perinatal unconscious.

Whereas it is the common people of the world, taking their pleasure in their pride of work, and especially their families, who have put themselves always on the line. The actual stimulus for a new field of pre- and perinatal psychology and the Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH) was Thomas Verny’s (1981) The Secret Life of the Unborn Child. His work brought together a good deal of the new empirical research that had opened the doors to us on the events in the womb. While himself a practitioner of “holistic primal therapy,” he integrated the accumulating data from the phenomenon of re-experience with the new information from the more traditional, “objective,” scientific research into the prenatal — made possible by the latest advances in technology. One of his conclusions from this combination of lines of inquiry was that “birth and prenatal experiences form the foundations of human personality” (1981, p. 118). His other conclusions center around the importance of intrauterine bonding in that his research strongly suggests that the prenate, via pathways hormonal and unknown, picks up on the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes of the mother. More importantly, he asserted, the imprint of these factors on the fetus predetermines the later mother-child relationship. On-line at youtube, I recommend a video, titled “Holographic Universe,” which is an excellent overview of the model and makes the clear case that science has most definitely overturned the materialistic paradigm which birthed it hundreds of years ago. All that being said, I wish to point out that the recent and rapid emergence of the field of transpersonal psychology itself is pushed by an inability to continually disregard the evidence of our own senses that does not fit with the mechanical paradigms we were taught. This new evidence, which is pouring forth on the cutting edges of our modern sciences, has made the Newtonian-Cartesian paradigm as obsolete as the flat earth one.

Winnicott’s true self and false self are pretty much the same, with qualifications I will mention. Winnicott saw the true self as the source of creativity, self-confidence, and contented satisfaction in one’s life and the false self as the one we develop to please others, which focuses on compliance and is essentially unreal and “phoney” — focused as it is on satisfying the needs of others in a roundabout, but thoroughly unconscious, way of trying to get one’s own needs filled. These aspects of personhood might also be related to Freud’s earlier postulation of an ego and an id, but they present a thorough reconceptualization of them, with the id emerging as a true self and a source of great value and the ego revealing its unreal roots and its nature as comprised of defenses. This is hugely significant.

So earlier on there is a dealing with psychodynamic energy. One must be brave, and of course that part is learning that is fundamental to any style of hero. In the same way in Nothing but Trouble — another cult classic I will use to make my case — Chevy Chase deals with psychodynamic material and enacts a “dragon slaying” by risking his life to rescue Demi Moore from a giant chopping machine. But, also similarly, this results in the opening up of another level, requiring a completely different — indeed, opposite — response. In Nothing But Trouble, the ending shows the town, after all — not the least affected by the heroic rescue and escape occurring earlier in the movie — sinking into a pervasive and inferno-like underground. The pervasive fire below the earth has much in common with a volcano. In both movies, there is this element of consuming fire that is used to symbolize pain, suffering, and evil that is all-encompassing, comprehensive, and thus unable to be defeated in any normal way, and certainly not by single individuals or small groups of them.

Prematurity was the compromise, the imperfect solution. It meant that, in order to make up for the loss of all that time of maturation in the womb which other species are afforded, we would have a longer time of abject helplessness after birth. This postnatal time of one year, comparable to the time our nearest relatives in Nature spend in the womb, would require careful, focused, and thoroughly all-encompassing care by the mothers or other caregivers. It would be accordingly exhausting and time intensive. This meant that needs of the infant could never be perfectly satisfied. Human mothers now needed also more expertise in child-caring than those in Nature. The knowledge and skill required could never be ideal. Indeed, there would be a gap in what the baby needed and what mothers could provide. Compared to Nature, human infants were needy, difficult, time-consuming, and frustrating in their being so helpless and so long to mature. This would have consequences for child abuse later on, but in the beginning it simply meant human mothers had a much greater and more difficult workload than their sisters in Nature. Thus, premature birth and narrower pelves — concomitant with bipedalism — won out. Atmadharma The bottom line is that one might be virtually able to be anything one wants to be — one might be able to partake of infinite possibilities within our postmodern multicultural surround — but in life we have to choose. I daresay each of us is here to be that who one is most meant to be. One’s duty, dharma, mission in life is one’s own, one’s own alone; and it is founded upon what talents and abilities one brings, with all one’s unique- as-a-snowflake set of inherent potentialities combined with what one becomes as confronted by one’s earliest experiences, the life circumstances into which one is born, and the skandhas, or leftover skeins of proclivities, arisen of one’s karma, that one brings forward from what one has been in Infinity. One is not just better off being who one most is in potential; the Infinite opera of the All That Is demands it of us; it is the sweetest and most perfect symphony of all when one adds one’s unique contribution to it. Without your part, the harmony of the Universe is less for it. This is where one’s identity is related to one’s dharma, as well. Dharma is a word used in India to mean one’s profound duty in life.

We will either heroically, somehow, save our species and our planet, which will require a change of our human nature unlike anything that has been asked of our species ever before, or we will be witnesses to the elimination of life on this planet in some way that we cannot imagine but can only be horrific in the extreme. So this book is hardly for those who would prefer to keep their heads in the sand and to sleepwalk through life. Certainly, that is part of the reason we could get to this pass. However, it is doubtful that such people, in such deep denial of the signs around them, would be able to hear what I will be bringing into the open here, anyway. Nonetheless, I urge you, if to the contrary you are of the type who would wish to look fiercely at the truth, no matter how horrifying it might be, and to truly witness and be awake in these most fantastic of times, then listen up. There is much here to see, much you have never been told. A great deal of it the mainstream media will never touch for fear of creating a panic. Still, to survive our species must face our problems, not look away. And there is a nobility in doing that, which is unlike any kind of nobility or heroism that has been asked of our species before.
