We are immersed in water before birth, placental fluid. Near the end of gestation, the mother, when standing, constricts blood vessels to the fetus. This reduces the blood supply to the fetus and thus less oxygen is received. It is called fetal malnutrition. Prior to birth we humans experience suffocation and claustrophobic feelings — we “can’t get enough air”! — which seem deadly and unending. Aw, Hell The timelessness of prenatal experience at this point — when not getting enough air — feels horrific, an unending nightmare. This part contributes to human ideas of places of forever, endless suffering, for example, hell.

This is where one’s identity is related to one’s dharma, as well. Dharma is a word used in India to mean one’s profound duty in life. And it is where who one is to be coincides with spiritual and ultimate concerns. One has a duty arising out of who one is to be it; that is, to manifest it. A Sanskrit term expresses that notion — atmadharma. It means that one has a dharma, a duty or task or way of being in the world, that is directly related to one’s soulular identity — one’s Atma. In the West we say merely that it is connected to who one uniquely is. This perspective is the spiritual aspect of Identity. For indeed one’s decision of who to be roots us not only in our culture and society, but in the Universe and in relation to one’s inner psychological dynamics and all the metaphysical accouterments of destiny, service, beliefs, and that amorphous thing related to what one needs to do arising out of karmic and personal growth needs and requirements. All these play into what one does and needs to do. So one’s atmadharma says something about the spiritual process, the primal process, and the Identity processes of life ... especially in the places where they all overlap. PREFACE Page xvi

Yet all of this cannot be completely avoided. “Birth is like death to the newborn,” writes Verny (1984, p. 48). David Chamberlain Hypnosis, Confirmed Validity of Birth Memories David Chamberlain (1988), for many years the president of APPPAH (the Association for Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health), has further substantiated the claim of consciousness at birth and the accuracy of pre- and perinatal memory in the phenomenon of re-experience. He reported one study he did in which he compared hypnotically retrieved memories of birth from mother and child and found an astonishing degree of conformity in their responses. Of note was the degree of inner consistency and originality in these memories as reported by the former neonate. They often contained technical details of the delivery and labor unlike what would be expected of the medically unsophisticated, a perceptive critique of the way the birth was handled, and other details of the event that could not have been known through normal conscious channels.

The actual stimulus for a new field of pre- and perinatal psychology and the Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH) was Thomas Verny’s (1981) The Secret Life of the Unborn Child. His work brought together a good deal of the new empirical research that had opened the doors to us on the events in the womb. While himself a practitioner of “holistic primal therapy,” he integrated the accumulating data from the phenomenon of re-experience with the new information from the more traditional, “objective,” scientific research into the prenatal — made possible by the latest advances in technology. One of his conclusions from this combination of lines of inquiry was that “birth and prenatal experiences form the foundations of human personality” (1981, p. 118). His other conclusions center around the importance of intrauterine bonding in that his research strongly suggests that the prenate, via pathways hormonal and unknown, picks up on the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes of the mother. More importantly, he asserted, the imprint of these factors on the fetus predetermines the later mother-child relationship. Time Travel Equals Age Regression Interestingly, the appearance of the Longoliers is caused by the characters going back in time. Though King has them going back only fifteen minutes, and not age regressing to birth, I thought the fact of time regression was telling in the extreme. Time travel in general is indicative of the need to go back and fix the trauma of these early events. The Back to the Future series is merely one example. We all know many others. Winnicott’s true self and false self are pretty much the same, with qualifications I will mention. Winnicott saw the true self as the source of creativity, self-confidence, and contented satisfaction in one’s life and the false self as the one we develop to please others, which focuses on compliance and is essentially unreal and “phoney” — focused as it is on satisfying the needs of others in a roundabout, but thoroughly unconscious, way of trying to get one’s own needs filled. These aspects of personhood might also be related to Freud’s earlier postulation of an ego and an id, but they present a thorough reconceptualization of them, with the id emerging as a true self and a source of great value and the ego revealing its unreal roots and its nature as comprised of defenses. This is hugely significant.

Prematurity was the compromise, the imperfect solution. It meant that, in order to make up for the loss of all that time of maturation in the womb which other species are afforded, we would have a longer time of abject helplessness after birth. This postnatal time of one year, comparable to the time our nearest relatives in Nature spend in the womb, would require careful, focused, and thoroughly all-encompassing care by the mothers or other caregivers. It would be accordingly exhausting and time intensive. This meant that needs of the infant could never be perfectly satisfied. Human mothers now needed also more expertise in child-caring than those in Nature. The knowledge and skill required could never be ideal. Indeed, there would be a gap in what the baby needed and what mothers could provide. Compared to Nature, human infants were needy, difficult, time-consuming, and frustrating in their being so helpless and so long to mature. This would have consequences for child abuse later on, but in the beginning it simply meant human mothers had a much greater and more difficult workload than their sisters in Nature. Thus, premature birth and narrower pelves — concomitant with bipedalism — won out. Recurring themes of monsters that eat one, for example, The Alien movie series, indicate the feelings of fear of death in the mother’s womb. This is often portrayed as a huge, threatening mouth surrounded by teeth and, sometimes, hair. This is a symbol found throughout the world. Social scientists refer to it as a vagina dentata “mouth.” One most obvious portrayal of this was Steven King’s 1995 miniseries, “The Longoliers.” The monsters, shown at the end, turned out to be flying, ball-shaped vagina dentatas, complete with hair covering, as in pubic hair. Though Steven King meant this to be frightening, from the perinatal perspective these flying, attacking vaginas are absolutely hilarious. But what remains is something stronger. You see humanity in a new light. It is one that opens a door on a reality greater than the one humans have contrived for their benefit alone. In doing this, you are invited to a return to unity with Nature and a harmonious understanding of our role, perhaps our destiny, in the grand scheme of things. I. APOCALYPSE AND INSANITY Page 8 These Humanicidal Times So this is where we are today. We are the product, the end result of all we have done. And we live our days acting out not just the pushes and pulls of unconscious traumatic memories, and engraved imprints wrought of forgotten events — as I and other psychologists emphasize — but also we find our actions channeled along lines, ways of behaving and things to do and ways to think, going back thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of years. We think of that as a wonderful thing, like we are the top of some heap built up by our forebears for us to enjoy the fruits of their actions. However, we reap the consequences of all their mistakes as well. So it is that we live in unprecedented times. These are days in which the possibility of ending our species in our lifetime, humanicide, even eliminating all life on this planet — ecocide or apocalypse— are very real possibilities. No other time has been like this. And the effect of this possibility of the actual end of days, so to speak — while so horrifying that we are in denial of it and hardly speak it — hangs over us and affects us in ways unique and fantastic.
