For the fifth of #arachtober, a Xysticus crab spider defending my basil plant like a little pit bull. (8/30/26)

Brown spider nestled in green leaf bud, shown diagonally with two legs visible outstretched to the left and the right.Close-up of spider head, with facial sutures that make it look like a cartoon dog, if you ignore the two extra small eyes visible between its main somewhat larger eyes.

A Cross Orbweaver #spider (Araneus diadematus) in the garden. Rather than hide, this one is using her camouflage on a Queen Anne's Lace seed head to sit with a leg on her signal line, ready to scurry up her web when something arrives. #wildlifefrommywindow #arachtober #invertebrates #MacroMonday

A spider sits on a seed head that looks like it's made of a cluster of tiny clams with spikey shells (each one is about 2mm long). They're all light to mid brown. The spider is a similar colour, and is mainly side on, looking frm right to left in the frame. She has the two front legs closest the camera slightly outstretched as she balances herself. She needs to do this as the opposite two front legs are raised up, holding onto a signal line frm the centre of her web. She's waiting to feel vibrations that would indicate she has caught some prey. Her legs have thick dark and light brown stripes across them. Her head is clearly visible, covered in light brown hairs, and her abdomen is positioned so that the white spots that make the cross shape from which she gets her common name, are just visible against the chestnut brown surroundings.

A long-bodied cellar spider (Pholcus phalangioides), silent, invisible and harmless to humans whilst being deadly to other spiders, even spider which are dangerous to people. A pest controller 🌱

#Arachtober 4: on a grey afternoon in the Necropolis, found quite a few opilionids (a. k. a. harvestmen, etc.) hanging out under the overhangs of tombs like these. I think this one is _Leiobunum vittatum_?

Opilionids are not spiders; they are their own order […]

[Original post on flipping.rocks]

An old tomb in a large cemetery. It is a tall square block surmounted by a tapering column. The inscription on the front is almost completely worn away.On the old stone, an arachnid with a plump oval orange body that has armoured-looking segments and a splotchy dark marking down the middle. It has two tiny eyes on a little tubercle towards the front of its head. Its legs are extremely long and thin and extend out of frame, and the left leg IV (its left) is missing.

For today's #arachtober post I'd just like to share one of my favourite Youtube channels. This is a spider enthusiast who makes wonderful videos about the spiders that live in your house. It also has a very catchy theme song that is always stuck in my head.

A Cardinal Jumping Spider and grasshopper from the garden today for #Arachtober. Phidippus cardinalis. #spiders #gardening

A black spider with a large crimson red head and deep orange abdomen punctuated with two rows of black dots clasps a grasshopper, together with several grass spikelets. In the background are blurry green and yellow bitterweed flowers. These spiders are mimics of velvet ants, which are actually wasps with a painful sting. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.
