This is not a spider. Not a scorpion. It's a whip scorpion, or more precisely, a tailless whip scorpion from the order Amblypygi. An ancient group that's been crawling around since the Carboniferous, over 300 million years ago.

I found this Bold Jumping Spider (Phidippus audax) while doing the #CityNatureChallenge with my girlfriend. She had to help me get prickly pear spines out of my pants shortly after this shot.

This vinegarroon is one of the few named species of this order from the entire Mesozoic era. It already looks quite modern in every details, and shares a lot of features with the current vinegarrons living in the Americas.

Just like humans have their own follicle mites, this species completes its entire lifecycle thanks to dogs’ skin. On a dog with a weaken immune system, this mite can cause demodicosis.
