Had an unexpected visitor last night. Mister G was intently pawing at the screen so I opened it to see what was outside. Lo and behold it was a #StickInsect! G was most upset I released it, but it had already lost a leg to some predator & needed a hand (and a limb).

Up at Shop, this one tangled itself into a Spider web. I got it off the wings and body, then took it out by the woods to release.Polyphemus moth/giant silk moth. 5" Wingspan #Insects #Moths #Invertebrate #NatureLover

Tan to warm brown body and wings
Large, prominent yellow-and-black eyespots with blue-gray centers are visible on both hind wings, which help startle and deter predators.

A Large Milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) on a milkweed pod. These bugs inject saliva into the seed pod to dissolve and liquefy milkweed seeds for food.

In the center of the image, a Large Milkweed Bug sits on the seed pod. The bug is oriented vertically, head pointed downward. The bug Is mostly shiny black. The central part of the bug's small head is a reddish orange. The outer edge of the carapace is bright orange. This orange continues on the wings. A black bar appears across the width of the wings in the center of the body. Orange continues behind, narrowing towards the outer edge, with black roughly forming a V on the tail end of the body.

The milkweed bug has a very thin proboscis that is probing the surface of the pod. A small black ant can be seen near the bug. The background is green and completely out of focus.
