I totally spaced out on #Arachtober yesterday, and today it’s world #JumpingSpiderDay. A female Apache Jumping Spider, Phidippus apacheanus, with sawfly prey, on the restroom at Cottonwood Picnic Area, Cimarron National Grassland, near Elkhart, Kansas, USA. #bugsky #bugwatching

Compact spider, hairy, dull orange on top, otherwise black, facing left, and holding a black and red sawfly in her jaws. Spider is on a restroom building.

Macro of a female green lynx spider guarding her large, spiky brown egg sac underneath a green leaf. She’s a vibrant, translucent neon-green head and body, while her long, light tan and green legs are covered in distinct black spots and prominent, sharp black spines. Her legs wrap securely upward to anchor onto the textured, papery brown surface of the egg sac suspended above her in a network of fine silk. The background is completely dark and dissolved, isolating the protective mother.

For fun, today I will walk through how acarology works, and how I got this mite I found by the Welsh shores down to species. This also applies to many insects. When someone says "Can you tell me what species this is?" is often a hard question to answer.

Close up photo of a tiny mite walking across a wet, muddy brown surface on the shore. This was the underside of a rock near LLanelli. Its body is a smooth, glossy, orange brown oval, longer than it is wide, that shines in the light. Paler orange legs and mouthparts reach forward to the left.

Yellow-spotted falsehorn (Temnostoma daochus) hover fly trying on her Halloween costume: a scary wasp with long antennae. (photo from April 2021)

Side view of Insect on a leaf. Insect has wasp-like yellow and black striped body, large dark eyes, and blobbish mouthparts extended down to surface of leaf. She is holding her forelegs straight out to either side of her face, so that their long dark ends look a bit like antennae. Her actual antennae are little yellow paddles with wispy extensions.

A crab spider and bumblebee for #Arachtober. #spiders #bees #gardening 🌱 #bugsky

A White-banded Crab Spider perches at the tip of a Salvia farinacea flower stalk waiting for pollinators to grab. She is a white spider marked with small pink blotches in a V shape on her large bulbous abdomen. The spider sits with her shorter back legs gripping the flower and the two longer front legs on each side held together and swept back, ready to snap forward and grab. Misumenoides formosipes. (This spider is very similar to a Goldenrod Crab Spider, so I could be wrong on identification. ) This picture was taken two days after the bee pictures, but it looks like the same spider.A white crab spider with a design of pink lines on the side of the abdomen clasps a much-larger bumblebee in her jaws and claws while upside-down on a blue mealycup sage flower stalk. The bee is a Common Eastern Bumblebee, Bombus impatiens. Seeing this kind of thing always makes me sad, but a spider's gotta eat.A closeup of the spider holding the bumblebee. She is upside-down with her fangs inserted on the back of the bees neck. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.

What time is it? It’s #Cheliceratime, #Fossilfriday & #Arachtober !
For this triple occasion, we're talking today about a cretaceous vinegaroon!

All the basic infos are here but if you want to learn more, there’s more in the thread below!β¬‡οΈπŸ§΅

#cretaceous #paleoart #arachnid #sciart #bugsky
1/4

This vinegarroon is one of the few named species of this order from the entire Mesozoic era. It already looks quite modern in every details, and shares a lot of features with the current vinegarrons living in the Americas.

Size : 12-ish cm of body length
Time period : Early Cretaceous
Paleoart speculativometer : Few missing details

The animal drawn is a vinegaroon, an arachnid looking a bit like a scorpion with long thin first legs used as antennae

Poked around the yard last night after dark and took some #arachtober portraits. This is Say's Armored Harvestman (Libitioides sayi) which by name and appearance would fit in just fine in the Advanced D&D Monster Manual I had as a kid.
