For #MacroMonday, may I present this rather huge #orbweaver #spider I saw when I went to the space coast today. The one road along the water’s edge had big spider after big spider. #arachnid #WildlifePhotography #ECK

A female green crab spider (Misumessus oblongus) dangling from her web upside down and kind of balled up in a defensive “don’t look at me I’m just a dangling speck” pose. Sort of a profile so the eyes are somewhat visible. Her head is more to the left of frame. The background is that awful toothpaste blue-green from the inside of a porter potty

Here in the south of France we have two species of #scorpion. The Yellow-tailed scorpion (𝘛𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘴) is 4cm long with robust pincers. The Yellow Scorpion (𝘉𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴) can reach 8cm, and invests in a larger sting. They both #fluoresce under #UV light. #entomology #arachnid

Also seen at Mississippi Lake: a Striped fishing spider (Dolomedes scriptus). This was pretty big, about 100 mm (4 in) across.

Have you guys heard of a bolas spider?
This is loosely based off of one! (Not size accurate lmao)
They are in the orb weaver family but instead of weaving webs, they create a sticky thread to lure their prey in so they can ambush them.
They're so ugly icl
#spider #arachnid #clay

An epoxy clay model of a female brown bolas spider. The abdomen is made from a dried conker (horse chestnut). The web silk is made from a clear thread and an orange droplet bead. An overview angle of the model spider. I have it glued to the corner of a shelf so the bolas web can drip down waiting for prey. The spider model on my hand. It is about the size of my palm and can stand up on its own, though one back leg (not shown) is only half formed. This came from a mistake in the wire frame of the spider that I decided to exaggerate as many spiders do lose legs lol

What time is it? It’s #Cheliceratime & #Fossilfriday !

Today I wanted to talk about how pseudoscorpions use larger animals as taxis, and that this behavior is known from multiple fossil examples!

Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next Cheliceratime!

Today's entry is on Nanorchestes antarcticus, and yes like its name implies, it's a mite native from Antarctica!

All the basic infos are here but if you want to learn more, there’s more in the thread below!⬇️🧵

1/3

This species is one of the few terrestrial chelicerates native to Antarctica, all of them being mites living in rocky costoal areas. It belongs to some of the most ancient mites lineages.

Size: around 0,25mm of mean body length
Time period: Holocene (present day)
Conservation status: Least concern/Near threatened

The animal drawn is a mite looking a bit like a ball with small legs and numerous hari-like projections

We have a pretty visitor in our conservatory, setting up home in the recycling corner.
Does anyone recognise them?

#arachnid #spider

Photo of a spider who is varying shades of brown with stripey cream and dark brown legs. They are pictured against a pale wall and are, effectively, hovering in midair as their web strands are invisible against that pale wall. The spider is head down, but two pale spots in the underside of their abdomen look like menacing eyes.
