I found this Bold Jumping Spider (Phidippus audax) while doing the #CityNatureChallenge with my girlfriend. She had to help me get prickly pear spines out of my pants shortly after this shot.

Butterfly Orbweaver and Flies - #Arachtober 9

This pair of Signal Flies (Senopterina caerulescens) did not seem to mind being watched by me or the Butterfly Orbweaver (Araneus pegnia). Found in South Texas.

#Arachtober Letter H today. Holocnemus pluchei, Marbled Cellar spider, fancy version of the common Celler spider P.phalangioides. First recorded here 2004 and generally confined to garden centres and warehouses. Now established at a handful of sites. @britishspiders.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk

I have always liked these small orbweavers. They have such a pretty pattern across the abdomen, and their eyes shine red when caught in a flashlight. Found in South Texas.

A six-spotted fishing spider (Dolomedes triton) anchored to an aquatic plant at their abdomen and back legs as they stretch their front legs out over the murky, still surface of a vernal pool to look for food. Their head and front legs are pointed toward the bottom right of the frame. Their abdomen and back legs are in shadow while their front legs and cephalothorax are in the light.

October is Lost Species month (www.rewild.org/lost-species) so to celebrate, I will be posting about some of the species our lab has recently re-discovered, including Scotinella pennimani. This spider was last seen in 1967 but we re-discovered it last year while hiking through Okefenokee Swamp, GA.

This is one of my recent favorites, a Crescent-eyed Spider in this genus, Selenops. The family is called ‘Flatties,’ and you can see why, they are extremely flat spiders. Their flat shape lets them squeeze under bark or hide perfectly against a wall.

I found this cut little burrowing wolf spider on one of my walks. She must have been used to foot traffic, inches from the sidewalk, so I saw her a few days and then I brought out my camera on Halloween night last year.
