First snow of the season on Aonach Beag today. ❄️🥾 Winter is coming - but not yet!

It’s a long time since I got so wet on a hill, and the views were somewhat limited. Plus a slightly scary river crossing with thigh-deep, fast-flowing water.
But what a great day we had!

City Centre: bikes now 1 in 3 in rush hour

A Spokes traffic count in George Street and Princes Street on 24 September found bikes forming over 30% of all vehicles in the morning peak period, and over 20% at lunchtime. Other findings suggest a major boost to bike travel thanks to the Council’s Voi bike hire scheme.

Our count was conducted to add concrete evidence to current uncertainties over the future of both streets, with Princes Street likely to remain 4 lanes of tarmac for the some years to come and no funding available for the ambitious but extremely costly George Street proposals for a semi-pedestrianised ‘cycle street’ (albeit with significant motor traffic at times!). The money which had been intended for George Street will now go to repaving Princes Street footways with high-cost materials in what Cllr Lang termed a “glorified resurfacing project.”

Thus, whichever east-west route best suits a cyclist’s journey, Princes Street or George Street, cycling conditions in both look set to remain dire, with a major central gap remaining in CCWEL, the Council’s City Centre West-East Link, unless the Council thinks again.map showing CCWEL missing link along George Streettable of main results

We're off to Roy Bridge for our next trip 9-12 October, a regular return. The weather has often been mixed on our trips, but we've had a good time anyway. Lots of hills to enjoy in the area, plus trains, cafes, gondolas to visit if too wet. We have monthly weekend trips and welcome non/new members.

How well is nature protected in our planning system? Policies often look good on paper, but are not always followed through in practice. This article by @plandemoc.bsky.social is worth a read:

A lovely day out in North Berwick, walking up Berwick Law and around Balgone Lake, partly on the John Muir Way. Overcast skies turned to heavy rain after lunch but we had waterproofs, great chat and a good cafe to dry out in. We have regular walks in the Lothians & Fife, non-members welcome!

I’ve been eking out this wonderful book while on a walking holiday for 2 weeks. Needed to make it last as I can only carry one book, but it really repays slow reading. Can’t recommend it highly enough, well done @jenstout.bsky.social

There was camping allowed around the refuges (if booked) but we certainly didn’t see anyone else trying. But then they would have hidden themselves well!

Yes, you’d think that the reporting in recent years of wildfires would have raised awareness but there’s obviously still a way to go.

Always interesting to an old Rambler to see access management in other countries. These are a few signs from the Pyrenees national park. Seems a bit restrictive to Scottish eyes - no cycling, dogs, camping - but the upside is the GR10 & other routes are very well managed. And very well used (€€!)

Come with us to the Pyrenees, they said. Warm, sunny days and great views from the mountains on the GR10 route. Ha! More like Scotland today. (Not really complaining, after 7 days of ☀️☀️☀️).

Here’s a handy sign that Historic Environment Scotland might want to use as a template for reopening the Radical Road in Edinburgh. Hundreds of people today happily enjoyed a visit to the Cirque de Gavarnie in the Pyrenees. What do you think, @ramblersscotland.bsky.social?
