2.6 ACCESS & MOVEMENT
Existing Travel
The site contains a range of paths and
roads. Many of the roads are access only.
The extent of carriageway is excessive
compared to the traffic levels on the site.
There are walking and cycling routes that
cross the site. Due to size of the Astley
Ainslie site these provide important
routes for people travelling between the
surrounding areas. The access within
the main entry points on the site are
safeguarded for active travel use in City
Plan 2030. Some are also recorded rights
of way.
Despite the importance of the routes, the
signage and accessibility across the site
could be improved. There are also several
gated access points, where opening the
gates to pedestrians, and in some location
cyclists, would improve the access and
permeability of the site.
The southern safeguarded entry to the
site from Cluny Place is open but has signs
prohibited access, running counter to the
safeguards that are in place. This southerncontinued...

access point will also be important for
pedestrian access if a future train or tram
stop is created on the south suburban line.
At present the public transport
accessibility of most of the site is poor. The
closest buses to the site are those that run
alongside Kilgraston Road, Morningside
Road and Cluny Gardens.
Strategic Travel Improvements
Development of the site requires the
provision of several pedestrian and cycle
routes through the site linking to Canaan
Lane, Cluny Place, South Oswald Road,
Grange Loan to the east of the site and at
Whitehouse Loan, including the following:
• ATPR7: Active travel link and crossing:
Cannan Lane to Grange Loan
• ATPR8: New Active Travel route and
crossing: Oswald Road to Cluny
Gardens/Charterhall Road junction
• ATPR9: New active travel infrastructure:
Newbattle Terrace/Grange Loan
• ATPR10: Provide a mobility hub
• PT15: Contribute towards Public
Transport Improvements: Morningside
Road/ Cluny Gardens
