#Arachtober 7: back in April I found a whole bunch of mesostigs just chilling with a rove beetle under a log.

Probably Parasitidae or something like that. Contrary to their name these mites are mostly soil-dwelling predators, like the ones in these photos. I […]

About ten oblong or oval golden-brown mites, as well as a larger glossy dark brown elongated-teardrop-shaped critter with very short golden-brown elytra, on the grimy underside of a log.Close-up with one of the mites almost in focus, showing its longer, thin, antenna-like first pair of legs and its short, curved, almost claw-like second pair of legs. The smooth dorsal shield seems undivided.Another group of mites near the first one; no doubt a nymphal stage. They are rounded and simpler-looking, with legs peeking out from underneath.

Apologies, yesterday’s wall spider was for #Arachtober 5th. Today, the 6th, features a female Western Black Widow guarding her egg sac in her silken tunnel retreat. Cottonwood Picnic Area, Cimarron National Grassland near Elkhart, Kansas, USA. #bugsky #bugwatching #spider

This is one of my recent favorites, a Crescent-eyed Spider in this genus, Selenops. The family is called ‘Flatties,’ and you can see why, they are extremely flat spiders. Their flat shape lets them squeeze under bark or hide perfectly against a wall.

#Arachtober 6: a small running crab spider (_Philodromus_) releases a thread of silk on the wind, preparing to "balloon". Sometimes they do this to travel far distances, other times simply to cross a gap. Orbweavers can use this to lay down web frameworks […]

One time I got curious about a dried up gall, saw it had an exit hole so was likely empty, and wanted to know what the inside looked like. But... it turned out someone else had moved in

Apologies to this little Tutelina, I hope you found a new house to your liking

Slightly belated #Arachtober 5: for #MiteMonday, here's my favourite mite find of the year. Back in March, found a whole bunch of Erythracaridae racing around on pine trees.

These speedy predatory mites used to be part of Anystidae but were split off into […]

A small reddish-orange mite with longish translucent legs that have faint red-orange banding and lots of spiky hairs sticking out exactly perpendicular to the leg. It also has two dark red eyespots. It looks very similar to a whirligig mite if you stretched it out a bit and added lots more leg hair.

My #Arachtober 4th spider is from yesterday at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, west of Tucson, Arizona, USA. Wall spiders, family Oecobiidae, are very small, even as adults. #bugsky #bugwatching #spiders #arachnids
