Any entomologists around?

I think this is a Great Black Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus), but someone on iNat insisted it's a Lyroda triloba (I can maybe see a subita). It's preying on a cricket here. Any thoughts?

Fishing spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus, per #iNat) that appears to have regrown its right front leg. Black Rock Forest, 7/26.

Brown spider with long legs splayed out on mottled gray rock. Front right leg is shorter, redder, and less hairy than front left leg.

I've started a new iNat project. I'm trying to figure out how to analyze cold cricket songs! Being in New England, that's like half of my recordings.

Please add your cold cricket recordings here!

The Alt theme #BirdOfTheDay is #Corvids.
Caught a small flock of Canada Jays playing hide and seek on a beautiful day high in the Colorado Rockies. This was the only one who let me get a snap, and then it was gone.

Medium sized gray bird with black eyes and beak perches in the green of a fir tree. The background is of yellow aspen leaves.

As we approach the autumn equinox tomorrow, here's some wild berries I found this summer 🌞 IDs in alt text #iNat #pnw

Dull Oregon-grape. Edible but tart. Red elderberry. Edible but tart. Bunchberry aka dwarf dogwood. I don't think humans ate these throughout history but small mammals and birds probably like them. Salal berries (berries are actually modified sepals). Edible and culturally significant to many NW tribes.

There aren't many #rattlesnakes out lately, despite the holy ton of them last March. Curious, I graphed weekly sightings over the past four years, using #inaturalist #data.

Line chart covering almost four years of inaturalist data on southern pacific rattlesnake sightings. The thick blue line is this year. This year, more snakes were reported in March and April than in the three previous years. Sightings returned to more typical numbers in May and have slowly been dropping since.
