Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus) caterpillar on American Hazelnut leaf (Corylus americana). They prefer Spicebush or Sassafras but will eat Hazel or Birch.

I love NEW (to me) #NativePlants - quite literally pulled over on the side of 2 different roads today like a maniac, both times thinking I saw a really unique Goldenrod. The first, incredible sized blooms- have you ever!? On a GRod lol? The 2nd, white blooms!? Surely not.
Reader: nope & nope, meet
Free goldenrod, just appeared in the yard. All I had to do was not pull it up.
The garden is always full of such lovely things if you know where to look. #garden #gardening #nativeplants

Two years since I planted a spicebush from @beechhollow.bsky.social and at last have been dgraced with an adorable spicebush swallowtail caterpillar! I am SO excited!
Thirty-ninth native plant blooming in the yard, big leaf aster (Aster macrophyllus). Like last year it's a big hit with tiny ants, but should attract some bees as well.
Here’s a female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. The males are always yellow while the females can be yellow or black. She’s enjoying some Joe Pye Weed in the yard
🍂 That "messy" fall garden? It's actually a 5-star hotel for native bees, birds & salamanders. Leaf litter = insulation. Standing stems = shelter for 30% of bee species. Your rake can wait, wildlife can't.

Look what I found in my garden this morning.
We have a ton of what I think are Marsh Flies on our Sky-blue aster. Really cool looking but could easily be mistaken with wasp or bees. #NativePlants
