In very hot weather the female workers and queen will position themselves at the nest entrance and ‘fan’ the nest with their wings.

Experimenting with the styles of Brueghel & van Kessel, I tried to manipulate this garden photo into an antique botanical plate. Building the warm gold ground, deep indigo petals, and coarse grain by hand in Lightroom to give it the tooth of canvas.

A White-banded Crab Spider perches at the tip of a Salvia farinacea flower stalk waiting for pollinators to grab. She is a white spider marked with small pink blotches in a V shape on her large bulbous abdomen. The spider sits with her shorter back legs gripping the flower and the two longer front legs on each side held together and swept back, ready to snap forward and grab. Misumenoides formosipes. (This spider is very similar to a Goldenrod Crab Spider, so I could be wrong on identification. ) This picture was taken two days after the bee pictures, but it looks like the same spider.A white crab spider with a design of pink lines on the side of the abdomen clasps a much-larger bumblebee in her jaws and claws while upside-down on a blue mealycup sage flower stalk.
