Hi #GenHour! My news of the week is that on Monday, I received a photocopy of my mat GF’s birth certificate. As I suspected, it lists his father as deceased & that while he’s the 4th child born only 3 survive. (His father died 8 days & his sister died 7 months (respectively) before he was born.)

#GenHour Here's one of my joined clippings. You can see they've highlighted the parts of the article that belong together. Previously when I clipped the one big area, everything would have been the same value without highlighting.

After only fifteen minutes, I had a collateral relative getting swindled out of a couple of overcoats!

#GenHour Before they added that feature, I used to clip huge parts of a page so I would have both pieces of an article like an obit. It is much nicer to be able to clip the two separate pieces and join them. I usually download the entire pages, though, so I can have the context.

Today's #AATP26 Tip: look at your ancestor's census neighbours. They may be relatives, friends or colleagues, and can offer clues to your ancestor's identity and movements.

#GenHour Today's tip: for some websites, it pays to bookmark the site map. Newspapers-dot-com is probably one of them.

I can see how merging different parts of an article could be useful.

#GenHour Ditto! I've had some amazing "lucky dips" there.

And the alerts feature is a real blessing, given how funky the search can be.

#GenHour Despite all the deficiencies, I still think they have the best blog title in the business. (not to be confused with the actual news site calling itself Fishwrap)

Good luck! I hope you find stuff! #GenHour

#GenHour I make most of my clippings public, and I often copy the OCR text and paste it into Notes. I use the Save to Ancestry feature quite often, though sometimes it annoys me. (Sometimes saving the clipping messes up in the middle of the process so I have to go in and fix things.)

#GenHour Feel free to ping me if you have any questions (I have it as part of a US All-Access sub). I set up alerts for my #OnePlaceStudy & some hard-to-find people of interest. I am enjoying the new clipping feature which allows you to join two parts of an article that aren't close by on a page.

#GenHour I haven't registered any study places yet but I am trying to bring a #OnePlaceStudies mindset to the main study places in my ordinary #FamilyHistory research. Some places of interest: Slapton near Kingsbridge in Devon, Retford in Notts, Holyoke, Massachusetts, North Adams, Massachusetts.

Delighted to find Free Access to Newspapers.com sitting in my inbox! Ending on Monday, though, so I hope I find the time to have a gander.

#GenHour If you like research guides, check out Michelle Spencer's website. You'll be asked to subscribe. This week in email she offered a guide on doing research for the 1918-1919 Flu epidemic.

For the record: I wish #genealogy people would move off of Substack.

Hello #GenHour friends! How's your #genealogy research going this week?

I'm still trying to get my computer hardware straightened out and wishing I was exploring the new Evidentia instead.

This week's Evidentia topic one of my favorites: research questions!
