#GenHour Just realized this might have been unclear.
Thomas Frederick Allery Sr. emigrated to the US
His son Thomas Fredrick Allery Jr. was "Bob" or "Robert"
(Sadly ThomaS Frederick Allery III died while a teenager in a drowning accident. I don't know what nicknames he had, if any.)

#GenHour At first I wondered if I were looking at twins. Finally when I found the obituary, it confirmed "Robert" or "Bob" was a nickname. Especially be on the lookout for this if the son shares the same names as the father.

@davelifelines.bsky.social' Setting the Record Straight" is a must-watch, to show how databases of digitized records can lead us astray. Maybe not for absolute beginners but a useful resource for when they're ready.

#GenHour One of my older brothers changed between using his first and middle names, plus as a kid he had a completely unrelated name as a nickname. I later found out my family was not the only one who did this. From my #OnePlaceStudy, Thomas Frederick Allery, who went by "Robert" or "Bob". 🤔

#GenHour When I was first starting out, I missed so many records because the surname wasn't spelled the way my family spelled it! "Correct spelling" is a very 20th-Century notion, plus you start out with handwriting variations and add bad indexing on top of it. Wildcards are great if sites allow.

Yes, yes and yes! Lovely the NLS tool - it's great. Thank you Yvette - this is definitely on the list.

Absolutely on the 'not everything is digital, & be careful with what is!' Have found some pretty out-there transcriptions on the way, cured by sight of the originals...

And lovely point about formal vs known/used names! 👏

Thanks Jan, I really like these suggestions - they're very insightful. Much obliged!

Thanks all!

Really helpful on all counts - and always on the maps! Have only just discovered the town maps layer, and it's amazing!

This is all SO useful, Rosie - thank you, it's really generous of you. I'm learning from this, too! 😃👏👍

#GenHour Hope this helps! Shout-out again for the National Library of Scotland. Always do research with a map if you can! It's so helpful.

#GenHour Free resources: The FamilySearch Research Wiki! I would especially draw attention to the blue button in many of the articles which takes you to an overview of what records can be found online for a given place, with a breakdown of what sites are free and which are by subscription.

Hey there, #GenHour, gosh...what's up this week? Why Everything!, or so it seems. Just yesterday we had the first of our #AATP Pacific Edition talks as @kylabayang.bsky.social and @jennifer-jones.bsky.social came to talk about Getting Started!

#GenHour I would add to that list, The Internet Archive, Trove and Papers Past (*big* newspaper stories go around the world, you never know where things will turn up), The Ancestor Hunt (for finding free online newspapers), and other major archives like Library and Archives Canada and NARA.

#GenHour I don't know how much you want to get into the weeds showing them, but I would try to give absolute beginners the information that online computer databases at the big genealogy sites are not *complete* and the indexing can be problematic. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFi1...

- Don't neglect what you already know! Enlist the help of others in the workshop and have students interview *each other* as an aide to remembering stuff about your own life. #GenHour

- Lots of people will give advice about talking to your family members, but if you can, also talk to your family members friends and neighbors (FAN research: extended family, friends, associates, neighbors) #GenHour

- Start a journal to record their thoughts. Not a technical "learn how to record your sources" (though that's a useful habit to start early) but how do they feel about what they're discovering, what questions do they have, what to work on next.
