My #AATP talk about Dr John Cordy Keer is now live on @sogorg.bsky.social’s website. Discover how the Medical Officer of Health would have influenced your ancestors’s lives, & life in your #OnePlaceStudy or #LocalHistory

Public Health in Practice: Dr Keer of Plomesgate
John Cordy Keer was Medical Officer of Health for the Plomesgate district of Suffolk for 54 years. In this talk, we explore the vital public health work of the Medical Officer of Health throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We uncover how these local Medical Officers of Health battled infectious diseases, poor sanitation, and rural housing issues. We will also discover practical strategies for researching historical public health records using local archives, council minutes, and local newspapers to reconstruct this fascinating history.

Today is Day 9 of the #31DaysofGraves challenge. The focus is on mysterious memorial stones in the cemeteries of Loughborough, England, my #OnePlaceStudy (following the Scottish list) lynneaboutloughborough.blogspot.com/2026/10/31-d...

Another Batley St. Mary’s parish history piece, this time back to 1931 and a production of The Lily of Killarney. It includes names of those taking part.

#GenHour One of my older brothers changed between using his first and middle names, plus as a kid he had a completely unrelated name as a nickname. I later found out my family was not the only one who did this. From my #OnePlaceStudy, Thomas Frederick Allery, who went by "Robert" or "Bob". 🤔

Day 8 of #31DaysofGraves and we're looking at memorial stones 1700-1799 (following the Scottish list of themes). With the focus on Loughborough, my #OnePlaceStudy, many of these graves can be found in the churchyard of All Saints with Holy Trinity lynneaboutloughborough.blogspot.com/2026/10/31-d...

An offer that may be of interest to #OnePlaceStudy researchers in the USA!

Day 7 of #31DaysofGraves is all about repairs to what can often be delicate structures. Focus is on Loughborough, England, my #OnePlaceStudy (following the Scottish list of themes) lynneaboutloughborough.blogspot.com/2026/10/31-d...

If Day 1 of All About That Place #AATP26 has made you think about Getting Started on a #OnePlaceStudy, check out what info and guidance our website (and membership of our Society) has to offer – including a PDF Guide to #OnePlaceStudies which you can download! #OnePlaceWednesday

Please excuse a shameless #OnePlaceWednesday plug for my talk about Dr John Cordy Keer, Medical Officer of Health for the Plomesgate District which covered my #OnePlaceStudy of #Sudbourne. It goes live at 8am tomorrow. If the role sounds bureaucratic & boring, think again…

What a dummy I am - got engrossed in something & forgot the watch party 🤦🏻‍♀️ So I watched it as soon as I remembered, & very good it was too - especially for anyone in the USA who is thinking of starting a #OnePlaceStudy. Here’s a link to it

Turns out the reason I couldn’t initially find Charles Farlow on the 1841 census at Ancestry (as part of my current #OnePlaceStudy project) is because they’ve transcribed his surname as Farton. 💨😬 #OnePlaceWednesday

On Monday I went to the Batley St. Mary of the Angels Torchlight Procession, 75 years after the inaugural event. This one was 73 years to the evening of the third procession, & I’ve written about that event in the post below

The next meeting of the Bourne End, Buckinghamshire #OnePlaceStudy Society, on Thursday October 15th, is another ‘fireside chat.’ The speaker this time is Barrie Penfold, who has been volunteering with Target Magazine and the Community Centre for over 40 years. #OnePlaceWednesday

There is a small, single-storey extension (also brick-built and whitewashed, with a red-tiled roof) on the left, and a single-storey wooden building which may be a function room. The tops of trees behind the buildings can be seen, and the sky is blue with white clouds.

Yeah, that too. Ideally we should share the findings of our #OnePlaceStudy and #FamilyHistory research, but these days websites are incessantly scraped and books are scanned, to feed the ravenous AI beast – only for it to spit out, at best, flawed summaries with assorted fake ‘facts’.

A short video by me, from a past #AATP! Back in the days before AI slop, with its associated environmental and societal abuses, began to infest everything including this otherwise excellent event. Spending my #OnePlaceWednesday engaged in #OnePlaceStudy research that involves little or no GenAI.

@oneplacestudies.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 8:00 AM

As we are on Day 7 of #31DaysOfGraves, and as #AATP26 today focuses on Getting Started in #OnePlaceStudies and place-based #FamilyHistory, what better time to remind you that a burial ground can be a #OnePlaceStudy in itself – or the micro-focus that helps get a wider OPS started! #OnePlaceWednesday
