I had a great seawatch for a few hours off Gullane Point with Josh this afternoon.

Our first scans produced a juv Sabine’s Gull and many Little Gulls.

Later we heard that 23 Cranes were heading into the Forth. We fortunately picked them up distantly as they headed inland. Result!

Poops from the recent Shetland Egyptian Nightjar yielded DNA. Not much genetic difference between nominate (eastern) and saharae (western) subspecies, but Shetland bird is likely nominate; DNA is like birds from Oman and Kuwait. #birds #birding #birdingscotland @birdguides.bsky.social

Leaving aside the trivial pursuit of rarities, the main avian movements in recent days in addition to PF Geese have involved thrushes, Robins and finches. Amongst scarce migrants, my personal highlight has been Richard’s Pipit on Out Skerries. #BirdingScotland

Could I find a Baird's Sandpiper or maybe a Spotted Redshank at Riverside Nature Park?

A juvenile Snow Goose among the Greylag flock on Vatersay this morning must surely have pretty decent credentials as a transatlantic vagrant, though you can never be 100% sure. Thanks to Martin Macneil for flagging up this odd goose. #birdingscotland

The first year male SIBERIAN BLUE ROBIN that graced our Shetland garden this morning. A fifth for Britain and one hell of a garden tick! Thanks to all that visited and enjoyed this special bird today. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife

The Girdle Ness Syke's Warbler. Gorgeous weather, showy bird and a world ✔️ in NE Scotland. What's not to like?

Delighted to get good views of the Sykes's Warbler at Girdle Ness today. I saw it only briefly yesterday morning, realised it was something significant but was unable to pin it down. Later, I scoped the bushes from home and got it on the house list🙃

In addition to Siberian Blue Robin and Two-barred Warbler, one of the most interesting birds I saw today was this Lesser Whitethroat. Without a recording of call or DNA it remains unidentifiable, but an eastern origin looks likely. #BirdingScotland

Mediterranean Gulls are still scarce visitors to the Outer Hebrides. This first winter at Traigh Mhor today was the first we've seen on Barra this year. #birdingscotland

Have you seen a ringed Ptarmigan? Volunteer ringers from Tay and Grampian Ringing Groups are now fitting small colour rings (under license) to Ptarmigan in the hills of Perthshire and Aberdeenshire. 1/3 #BirdingScotland
