Giora Shoham Devolutional Model of Development, Falls from Grace While not strictly a pre- and perinatal psychologist, I include this too little-known theoretician and criminologist because of the close relationship and influence his work has had upon my own work regarding these Falls from Grace. Falls from Grace and other devolutional models of consciousness postulate that during life and over time, beginning at conception, we actually are reduced in consciousness and awareness — not increased in it — and it corresponds to a “brain as reducing valve” theory of consciousness.1

Our Knowledge Is Useful, Not Revelatory Our combined efforts in psychology, physics, biology, and anthropology have led us to an impasse. We have been led to conclude that our view of reality is symbolic. We have learned, above all, not what to know, but that we know not ... that is to say, that we are incapable of truly knowing. So, if we cannot know, why then bother to know anything? We seek to know because it is useful to our biological survival to know. That which we “know,” in our most refined science and in our daily lives, is that which is, or has been, in some way useful to the biological existence of our species. "Each one of us is potentially Mind at Large. Each person is at each moment capable of remembering all that has ever happened to him and of perceiving everything that is happening everywhere in the universe. But in so far as we are animals, our business is at all costs to survive. To make biological survival possible, Mind at Large has to be funneled through the reducing valve of the brain and nervous system. What comes out at the other end is a measly trickle of the kind of consciousness which will help us to stay alive on the surface of this particular planet." EXPERIENCE IS DIVINITY Page 38

WOMB WITH A VIEW — THE PRENATAL AND PERINATAL UNCONSCIOUS Page 58 …effects of birth and to process prenatal memories. He was the first to mention actual relivings of birth, in which verifiably accurate memories of birth were recovered. He agreed with Rank on many points, but he stressed the origins of consciousness and of trauma being in the prenatal period. He likened birth to death, as he explained that is the way the prenate experiences the drastic change involved in birth; and he claimed that our memory of that death-birth experience is what accounts for our fear of death as adults. A related interest of his is the one for which he is most remembered. He researched paranormal phenomena, including ghosts and poltergeists, and his conclusions are significant. You will see how his views presaged my own, when I discuss my work around “A Primal Perspective on Spirituality” (1985), in a little bit.

THE TAO OF FUNNY GOD, MATRIARCHY, AND LUNAR THEOLOGIES Page 59 Coinciding with this, they cling to one fiction of positive thinking, applicable to the inner self, and another, for the outside world, that law and order can be imposed from without; one can “clean up the streets” by moving the desperate out of one’s sight; the messiness of Nature can be covered up by asphalt and lawns and anything remaining strangled to death with Roundup and Weed-B- Gon; and so on. Underlying these beliefs is the assumption that were it not for bad guys and evil ones ... or dirty, smelly, buggy, slimy, and disgusting Nature ... life would (and should) be “happily ever after.” Suffering is not a corrective in life ... an aspect of learning ... it is some foreign element inserted into the plan of God. Since it cannot be of God, there must be a devil doing it. The body and Nature are ceded to Satan as well, putting one at odds and at war with oneself and one’s environment. One is not to learn from one’s “sins” but to have them atoned for and removed by an outside force ... a special emissary of the Divine ... a son of God? ... well that would be nice. Healing and wisdom do not arise from within, catalyzed by the exigencies of life, they are imposed from without: Priests and physicians, boys in blue and judges and soldiers are among the many authorities responsible for dispelling darkness in one’s life and upon whom one is dependent. Life would be heaven if they would, once and for all, just win!

THE THIRD DESCENT — PREMATURITY Page 27 Primates are rarely monogamous, for starters. Among our fur-bearing cousins, only the gibbons mate for life. Chimps are promiscuous and the fathers are not involved at all in the care of the young. Being non- monogamous as well as promiscuous, for one thing, paternity is not known. Some other mammals, such as wolves, pair off for life; and the males are protective and caring of the young, as the mothers are, but the paternity is known. They essentially have family units. Not so for our more closely related mammal planetmates. However, all these factors of sociability, monogamy, division of labor, and many other changes that came with infant helplessness made it so natural selection would favor those of us who mated for life, were monogamous, and had male assistance for the mother at and around the times of its roles of mothering. Thus, families. So, culture is born in the helplessness of the human infant.

If They Took Away Your Memory, How Would You Know? It wasn’t just me that saw this crash coming. For I found mentors in the market, who I picked because they also knew we were headed for collapse, and who even got laughed at and ridiculed publicly on TV for espousing these views. Still, I found these few not afraid to look squarely at the fundamentals, who were also not Republican cheerleaders propping up a Bush economy of giveaways to those not needing it. The market crashed, and we saw the many sheeple “supply-side” traders and “experts,” who had been in bed with that Administration and represented the special interests, suddenly realize that Bush could not keep the party going endlessly ... any more than Reagan could. Previously, I had watched as these same Republican-speaking mouthpieces for the rich and for the economics of greed had become over time the only voices being heard. Now, suddenly shocked that there were limitations on their thievery of the masses, these Bush- league players could be seen running for the exits like a bunch of cockroaches when the light is turned on. There Are an Infinite Number of Worlds It should be supremely clear by now, especially among those of us with a transcultural or anthropological familiarity — wherein we are made distinctly aware of the truth-shrouding nature of ethnocentrism — that any serious attempt at discerning truth is not compatible with any variety of self-serving or egocentric agenda, regardless how invisible it might be to us or how unconscious it might be held. And anthropocentrism — the idea that our species, alone, has the inside track, superior to all creation, on perceiving Reality — is such a self- aggrandizing notion. Thus, it is just as essential to throw off the overweening species- centric intellectual baggage of our Judeo-Christian tradition ... which posits “man” as the ruler over nature and as the summit of created species ... as it is essential to strive to drop our ethnocentric blinders. Indeed, making this attempt to view from a neutral, Archimedean, non-anthropocentric “window,” it follows logically that the probabilities are enormous that there are, in fact, other beings, unperceivable entities, unknown and unimaginable realities, and other and different senses ... and, yes, as one new physics proposition puts it, an infinite number of “worlds.” 1. This first part of Psychology of Apocalypse is about facing bravely into the fantastic circumstances and the situation in which we find ourselves, watching, like a photograph emerging in solution, as the face of these times slowly comes into view, and then waking up to the meaning of the message, perhaps the warning, it brings us, so that we might live most fully and take up our roles consciously amid these unprecedented unfoldings. What is required of us now, then, having turned to receive the message, is to look deep into the features of our age.

Lake began his investigation of re-experience in 1954. Like Stanislav Grof, he did this using LSD, initially, in the psycholytic therapy that was being developed at that time to facilitate therapeutic abreaction. Later he, again like Grof, developed a nondrug modality to accomplish the same thing. His method of “primal therapy” employed a type of fast breathing — again, like Grof’s later technique — to access theta-wave brain levels, which are levels of consciousness that he saw as crucial to accessing and integrating these memories. His thirty-year research led him to the realization of the importance of ever earlier experience. Thus his earlier stress on the importance of birth gave way to his later emphasis on the first trimester in 1981 (Tight Corners in Pastoral Counselling) and in 1982 (The First Trimester). He stressed the maternal-fetal distress syndrome, beginning at around implantation, as a major time of trauma. He also described a blastocystic stage of relative bliss just prior to that. His one other major disagreement with Grof was his belief that the mythological and symbolical elements described by Grof were a product of LSD and that the first trimester events were the actual… PRE/PERINATAL PSYCHOLOGY AND PHENOMENON OF RE-EXPERIENCE Page 23

EXPERIENCE IS DIVINITY Page 38 We will see shortly that means that the way we come into the world — our conception, womb life, and birth — create the foundations upon which all our other perceptions are built, and these being unique to humans mean that humans will be the only species seeing the world exactly the way we do. Further, while focusing on our biology as a basis for understanding what is fundamental about humanness, we are able to compare cultures in relation to that biology, though not in any other way. What we will see this means is that while we cannot compare cultures for the most part — this is called cultural relativity — we can compare them in terms of certain things all cultures share which have to do with the fact that all humans have the same kind of body and biological history: An example of that would be the way cultures deal with birth, specifically the pain of it.

On the other hand, solar theologies divide the world in two — into darkness and light, which are irreconcilable. The world is comprised of the sacred and the profane. Indeed, earthly existence is not just deluded, it is seen as corrupt and foul, even at times evil, in its nature. The only real good or light is separate from it, transcendent, is a heaven with no elements of the veil of darkness that is existence on Earth. Solar theologies therefore seek to repress all darkness within, and they struggle to eliminate and destroy all the darkness and discomforts of life without ... to bring their deluded idea of heaven to earth. They try to live in a world without darkness or shadows, one only of light ... thus a solar one, a daytime one. Their milky white heavens are without contrast ... and boring. Their earths are despised and polluted, tortured and raped to extract their resources, with as little importance to them as a garbage dump, for “in the sweet bye and bye” the Earth will be tossed aside as easily as a Dixie cup after one has drunk up. …configuration has women at the center, dispensing care and nourishment, and men on the peripheries, doing whatever they can find to do when they are absolutely not needed for reproduction, defense, or nonessentials and luxuries like meat and “entertainment” — that is to say, ritual, religion, and performance. Division of Labor Thus secondary altriciality can be seen to be responsible, as well, for the division of labor we notice in all societies between men and women, with it being extremely pronounced in some cultures and in others not as much, though it exists. The increased dependence of the infant on its mother after birth contributed to a division of labor with women needing protection during their times of increased vulnerability and incapacitation and time being taken up in the care of the very young. It contributed to gender roles, therefore. Family Units Beyond that, these tendencies, rooted in that dependency of infants, pushed for the creation of family units. Remember, families are not a big deal to our primate relatives. In chimps they do not exist at all. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 26

DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS II Page xxx …saying that they would not occur except for the birth traumas, and to that they do not agree. The Mythological-Archetypal Veil I have a different take on it, however. I do not dispute that some of their view is true. I really do not know the ontological status of these birth-like mythological and archetypal symbols. Nonetheless, I view the actual events of one’s life as having strong determination on the way one views and interprets everything that comes after them. That would include these transpersonal and archetypal realities as being at least shaped, if not caused, by our early experiences. My difference lies in two things: One, that these events shape or they configure our religious and spiritual understandings, especially our re- ligious ones, is what I elaborate upon, especially in this book and the three following it. However, I do not know the extent to which these events create or originate these transpersonal realities. Yet, in view of the findings brought out in my works, Planetmates (2014) and Prodigal Human (2016) — which detail the way humans evolved (devolved) the peculiar kind of birth we suffer from, which is radically distinct from all of Nature — it is curious to think what it might mean for these events, specifically resonating with our unique birth experiences, to have an existence independent of humans.

It is also a way humans in the modern era are different from prototypical humans, from primal humans. Let me explain. Let us go back, now, millions of years, to our most ancient of parents. However, scientists and the educated public are not supposed to be like that. It is our job to be looking squarely into the face of these forces of denial and potential apocalypse and to be seeking to understand the human condition and human psychology in light of them. It is our duty then to inform the rest of us about what we see so that we might have a chance of reversing our self-destructive tendencies. Whether the educated public and the multitude of scholars actually are fulfilling their mission in these times is debatable. Regardless, my thesis is that when we do this, when we look foursquare into the face of the global crisis and its accompanying denial, we find that these unprecedented global factors contribute to a unique and unprec- edented human condition and psychology.
