Stalking prey…
On the large nature reserve I visit there’s not really any predicting or planning for where or when the local #otters might make an appearance but it’s always special when they do!

An otter sideways on, facing left, and mostly out of the water in this photo as it stalks prey early morning. I had about 3 minutes watching this one before it disappeared and didn’t reappear again before I had to leave.

To say we’ve had some close encounters with red kites is a bit of an understatement…

#BlueSkies is the main theme for #BirdOfTheDay today. Here is a Chiffchaff who occasionally sang, but mostly chased after insect prey, in and around a shrub at Thornwick Pools nature reserve in Yorkshire towards the end of last month. #Birds #UKWildlife #NaturePhotography #EastCoastKin 🌿

Photo of a Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita), a type of warbler named for its "Chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff" song (which I heard before seeing this bird). The bird is perched on a twig, one of several on which leaf buds (but, for the most part, no leaves) can be seen. We are looking up at the warbler, whose body is facing towards the right side of the picture, while the head is turned slightly towards us. The bird has mostly pale brown plumage on its upperparts. There is a pale stripe running across the side of the face above the eye, and the throat, chest and belly are whitish, with pale yellowish brown on the flanks. The legs and feet are dark in colour. Behind the bird and the twigs, a blue sky can be seen.

Slowly coming back down to earth after finding this Siberian Blue Robin in our garden here at Hillwell, Shetland last week. The 5th British record and only the 7th for the Western Palearctic. A Holy Grail moment for sure. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife

A reminder from nature to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us while seeking a perfect balance in life... like this gorgeous male Southern Hawker! 💙🫶📷

Happy Monday everyone. Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead. 🕊️🌿

#MacroMonday #Nature #Invert #Dragonflies #UKWildlife #ECK

A close-up photograph of a vibrant male Southern Hawker dragonfly (Aeshna cyanea) resting vertically on a stalk of purple toadflax flowers.
The dragonfly is positioned head-up, with his long, segmented abdomen extending straight down the flower stem. His thorax is a bright apple-green color, accented by two prominent yellow-green oval patches on top. His abdomen features a pattern of dark brown, black, and bright green spots, transitioning into vivid blue segments at the very tip of his tail. The Southern Hawker has large, shiny compound eyes separated by a bright golden patch on the top of his head. Four translucent, glassy wings are spread fully open and flat to the sides, revealing an incredibly dense, delicate, dark-veined net pattern across their entire surface. The background is completely out of focus, filled with a soft, bright green and yellow bokeh effect created by sunlight filtering through garden foliage.

@atlanticbirding.bsky.social said today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BlueSkies; any bird against a blue sky.
I’ve gone with 4 few different raptors against 4 different blue skies: Marsh harrier, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Buzzard
