A humming-borb stretching and shaking after preening on a light brown twig. Its gray wings are straight out, and its black beak is up. Its underside is white with a black spotted chin, a vertical black furrow in the center, horizontal black furrows on its abdomen, and faint black spots on the underside of its black and white tail. In the background are patches of blue sky, green and yellow leaves, and thin brown branches and twigs.

Why yes, I am coming in very late with today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme #WingsOpenNotFlying with this Anhinga! Closest I’ve ever been to one. Stunning! 😍 🪶

An anhinga perched in a tree with its wings stretched out. It is facing to the left, its neck in an “s” shape.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WingsOpenNotFlying, birds with their wings open when not flying.

Maybe a new dance move?

A Mallard rearing up and flapping, just because.

An adolescent Canada Goose, also flapping it up. Those bluish thingies are keratin sheaths, inside which new feathers grow -- vital protection for something as exceedingly complex as a feather.

Mute Swans - like so many others in Brooklyn - will eagerly throw down for good real estate. This guy was loudly charging a rival in Prospect Park Lake, which typically hosts only one breeding pair. #WingsOpenNotFlying #BirdOfTheDay #Birds

Wings open, not flying.

Just a little mourning dove being a little more dove. 🩶🕊️

A mourning dove perches on the edge of a shallow, pebble-lined birdbath with its wings spread wide. Its soft blue-grey feathers are fluffed against the cool autumn air, and it looks calmly to the left. The background is softly blurred grasses and foliage.

Hello fellow bird friends! Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WingsOpenNotFlying. This Chinstrap Penguin has its wings open but Nature decided it can only do a silly walk instead of flying. Dream on, dear penguins!

Head-on view of a Chinstrap Penguin walking towards the camera, its wings spread and held slightly behind its body. The Penguins head is white with a black cap and a black outline of a chinstrap. Beak and eyes are black, feet are pink. The underside of the wings is a dark pink/brown with a black edge. The ground is grey/green rock and some green moss.

My #birdoftheday the Nannopterum auritum or double-crested #cormorant

These #birds leave their #WingsOpenNotFlying but we still don’t quite know why. Theories include aiding thermoregulation, digestion or indicating the presence of fish.
