A reminder from nature to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us while seeking a perfect balance in life... like this gorgeous male Southern Hawker! 💙🫶📷

Happy Monday everyone. Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead. 🕊️🌿

A close-up photograph of a vibrant male Southern Hawker dragonfly (Aeshna cyanea) resting vertically on a stalk of purple toadflax flowers.
The dragonfly is positioned head-up, with his long, segmented abdomen extending straight down the flower stem. His thorax is a bright apple-green color, accented by two prominent yellow-green oval patches on top. His abdomen features a pattern of dark brown, black, and bright green spots, transitioning into vivid blue segments at the very tip of his tail. The Southern Hawker has large, shiny compound eyes separated by a bright golden patch on the top of his head. Four translucent, glassy wings are spread fully open and flat to the sides, revealing an incredibly dense, delicate, dark-veined net pattern across their entire surface. The background is completely out of focus, filled with a soft, bright green and yellow bokeh effect created by sunlight filtering through garden foliage.

The Seaside Dragonlet (Erythrodiplax berenice) is the only dragonfly that inhabits only salty environments, like coastal marshes. I found this pair in the marshes of Plum Island.

Amazing day for seeing late season dragonflies. Easily the highest count for early October. A decade back I would only see 1-2 Common Darter. Today there were easily 100 per km stretch of the canal. Great to see multiple Willow Emerald for the first time too & loads of Migrant Hawker #dragonflies

“Frogs, bats, spiders, and dragonflies are more than just creatures we happen to find around our homes and fields. They are part of the natural system that helps keep insect populations in check.

A frog can consume large numbers of insects, bats feed on flying insects, and spiders capture countless prey in their webs. Even dragonflies contribute at an earlier stage of their lives: their aquatic nymphs eat mosquito larvae and other small aquatic organisms.

None of this means nature’s predators can eliminate every pest, or that agriculture can simply stop using pesticides. Ecosystems are far more complicated than that. But it does show why indiscriminate chemical use can have consequences beyond the insects we are trying to control.

When pesticides affect beneficial predators and pollinators along with pests, we can end up weakening some of the very organisms that help ecosystems function.

That’s why protecting habitat matters.

Healthy wetlands give amphibians and dragonflies places to reproduce. Native plants provide food and shelter for insects, birds, and other wildlife. Reducing unnecessary chemical use gives beneficial species a better chance to survive and continue doing what they have evolved to do.

Nature already has its own pest-control network.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is protect the habitat that allows that network to keep working.”
