For #stunday. The desert landscape near Giza, Egypt (2004). #egypt #giza #travel #desert #AncientBlueSky #travelphotography #AncientSiteSunday #PhotographersOfBlueSky #photography #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK

The photo depicts a wide, sweeping view of the desert landscape at Giza, Egypt. The ground is covered in arid, sandy, and rocky orange-brown soil with sparse desert vegetation. In the background, low sand-colored hills and mounds rise against a clear, slightly hazy sky.

Video in response to a viewer's question about whether I intended to continue Alexander the Great's story in further novels. The short answer is "I hope to," but there are some caveats, mostly to do with publishing itself. #ClassicsBlueSky #AncientBlueSky #AlexandertheGreat

For #stunday. The golden light of sunset hitting the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, Greece. (2023)

The image shows the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, Greece, capturing a historic row of ancient white marble columns standing against a soft, bright sky during sunset. A line of tall, fluted Doric columns remains standing, connected at the top by surviving stone architraves. The scene is illuminated by warm, low-angle sunlight, casting long, soft shadows and highlighting the texture of the weathered stone.

Clach Ghlas, an unusual lone standing stone in the middle of moorland on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland

It's suggested to be all that's left of a Neolithic or Bronze Age tomb, now lost (but is still labelled as such on maps!)

The remains of the #Roman amphitheatre at Pozzuoli (Italy), built during the reigns of Vespasian & Titus (probably by the same people as the Colosseum). It had a capacity of some 40-50,000 spectators

A revisit to Long Meg and her Daughters for #StandingStoneSunday

So much going on at this site with the setting, the geology, the carvings and the earlier monuments - just a fascinating glimpse at the Neolithic.

A squat, white standing stone in a field. The stone is speckled with green lichen and is made of rhyolite and is a glacial erratic.A tall block of red sandstone, known as 'Long Meg', in a field. Another view of the tall red sandstone block of Long Meg, from this angle the stone appears tapered and long-necked. Other stones can be seen across the grassy field towarslds some deciduous trees.

You're no Adonis / Having you gone is the best. For #SarcophagusSaturday, a look at this stunning late-C3 BCE #Etruscan terracotta cinerary urn from #Tuscania. It depicts a high-relief sculpture of the dying #Adonis. But was the deceased really such a catch? #AncientBluesky 🏺

TERRACOTTA CINERARY URN FROM TUSCANIA, LATE C3 BCE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

This spectacular polychrome terracotta cinerary urn depicts Adonis dying on a draped couch, a mortal wound visible on his left thigh, while a hunting dog licks its own wound at the base. It reflects a Hellenistic trend in Tuscania where workshops used moulds to produce these urns in series. Portraying the deceased as a dying hero was highly fashionable. The ashes inside might have belonged to a youth who died tragically young, but Etruscan funerary art frequently heroicised the dead, so it could equally hold the remains of an older man projecting an idealised divinised image for eternity. Despite its theatrical beauty and striking pigments, this urn was never meant for public display. It was destined for a tomb, only to be seen by the gods, the ancestors and living relatives during subsequent burials.

Missed posting last week, but a new page on Aduatuca Tungrorum (modern Tongeren) is up! Founded in the late 1st century BCE, the remnants of the ancient city include a long circuit of walls:

You were never mine, never mine. This #FrescoFriday we're admiring a #megalography, a large-scale #fresco, from the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor at #Boscoreale, now in the #MANN. Perhaps the lower woman is Stateira II, dejected that #Alexander preferred #Hephaestion. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FRESCO FROM BOSCOREALE, C1 BCE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI

A large Roman fresco from the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor set against a brilliant red background. On the left an allegorical female figure representing Macedon sits on a rock wearing a greyish tunic, a purple cloak and a flat Macedonian kausia hat while grasping a tall spear. Between them rests a bronze shield embossed with the Argead star of the Macedonian royal house. On the right a seated woman representing defeated Persia wears a pale gown, a blue mantle and a yellow head wrap. She rests her chin on her hand sadly, looking up to seek female solidarity in the eyes of her captor but finding none. This figure of subjugated Persia may be a portrait of Stateira II, daughter of the defeated Persian King Darius III, taken as a political trophy wife by Alexander the Great. She had ample reason to be dejected, as Alexander's primary romantic devotion was to his companion and cavalry commander Hephaestion.

For #forestFriday and #scape Friday. Ancient ruins in the cloud forest: Guayabo National Monument in Costa Rica (1998). The country's largest archaeological site and an overlooked gem. #CostaRica #ruins #AncientBlueSky #archaeology #landscape #landscapephotography #forest #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK

Dense, multi-layered tropical foliage dominates the view, featuring large fern trees, broad-leafed jungle plants, and thick canopies in various shades of green. In the center, the dense forest clears slightly to reveal an open, rolling green with the remains of ancient foundations nestled among the trees.

Among star finds from #Saxon Prittlewell Prince burial in Essex were #glass beakers w trailed lattice decoration.
Beautiful and rare, so similar they were likely made as a pair, in Kent. Few other examples are known, almost all in high status burials.
