🏛️ Roman history at the Archaeological Park Xanten in Germany.
The reconstructed temple architecture offers a glimpse into the monumental world of the ancient Roman city.
🇩🇪 Römische Architektur im Archäologischen Park Xanten.

View of reconstructed Roman temple architecture in the Archaeological Park Xanten, Germany. Tall pale columns rise above the remains of the temple complex, with part of a triangular pediment preserved above them. Lower columns and reconstructed walls extend across the site. A broad green lawn and stone bench occupy the foreground beneath a cloudy sky.

For #RomanSiteSaturday I'm in Ostia...quite a few trips there but this is from 2010.

The Casette Tipo (III.,XII,1-2 - III,XIII,1-2) which I thought an odd name ('typical or standard house') given there aren't any others like it.

Dating from c.AD 100.

And 'medianum apartments'? No...just no.

#RomanSiteSaturday – The clausura of Bir Oum Ali, about 35 miles southeast of Capsa (modern Gafsa), is one of the best-preserved sections of the Fossatum Africae (a network of Roman frontier barriers in North Africa). The imposing 2nd-century wall extends about 600 m and reaches up to 6 m high.

New post this week! The first of two on ancient Faesulae (modern Fiesole). Originally an Etruscan city, it was later destroyed and colonized by Sulla in the 1st century BCE:

The well-preserved Roman Theatre at Lycia, Turkey, was originally built during the Hellenistic period, then expanded and rebuilt during the 2nd century AD, with a capacity of roughly 10,000–13,000 spectators. Photo credit: Carole Raddato #RomanSiteSaturday #RomanArchaeology #Archaeology

Many people are still surprised to discover that the lands to the north of Hadrian's Wall are dotted with Roman sites including forts, roads, camps and bathhouses. To find out more, check out my books, both currently reduced if you buy direct from the publisher: shorturl.at/7Ytav

Inside the Temple of Jupiter, Emperor Diocletian's personal shrine in his palace at Split, Croatia

It's now a Christian church - the statue is John the Baptist and carving is an 11th Century Croatian king

Diocletian would have been utterly mortified! 😆

The Multangular Tower sits at the corner of the legionary fortress defences at York (Eboracum). Mostly early 4th cent CE, with medieval additions above. The adjoining fort wall almost stands to its original height.
