Your photo as a wall painting from another century. Fresco translates edges, colors and values into the marks and surface of fresco, keeping the composition you framed.

Medieval fresco of the Coronation of the Virgin in St. Andreas Church in Cologne, dating from the 13th century. Mary and Christ are seated at the centre of the composition. Christ raises his hand toward Mary in the coronation scene, while angels appear above them. Additional saints flank the central scene on both sides. The wall painting is executed in muted red, green, blue and ochre tones beneath a Gothic arch. St. Andreas is located in Cologne near the beginning of the Via Coloniensis pilgrimage route toward Trier.

Stairway to heaven. For #FrescoFriday we examine a rare #fresco from #Domitian's palace on the #Palatine. This yellow and purple staircase suggests staff used it to go from private imperial rooms to the magnificent state halls upstairs. Look for the ghostly figures. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FRESCO FRAGMENT FROM THE PALACE OF DOMITIAN, 85-90 CE. PALATINE HILL

A detail of an ancient Roman wall featuring painted fresco decoration. The plaster is painted yellow, divided into rectangular panels by dark purple bands. In the central yellow panel, a delicate double garland hangs across the space, and two ghostly but beautiful female figures stand in the lower register. At the bottom left, the plaster is broken diagonally, revealing the rough wall and a fragment of cipollino marble baseboard. This is one of the few remaining traces of fresco work from Domitian's palace. It originally decorated a stairway ascending from the peltae courtyard to the now-lost upper ground floor, later removed to create a corridor. While the architect Rabirius favoured lavish opus sectile for imperial rooms, this simpler decoration suggests this specific route was used by staff to travel from the private rooms of the imperial family up to the magnificent state halls above.

You were never mine, never mine. This #FrescoFriday we're admiring a #megalography, a large-scale #fresco, from the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor at #Boscoreale, now in the #MANN. Perhaps the lower woman is Stateira II, dejected that #Alexander preferred #Hephaestion. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FRESCO FROM BOSCOREALE, C1 BCE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI

A large Roman fresco from the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor set against a brilliant red background. On the left an allegorical female figure representing Macedon sits on a rock wearing a greyish tunic, a purple cloak and a flat Macedonian kausia hat while grasping a tall spear. Between them rests a bronze shield embossed with the Argead star of the Macedonian royal house. On the right a seated woman representing defeated Persia wears a pale gown, a blue mantle and a yellow head wrap. She rests her chin on her hand sadly, looking up to seek female solidarity in the eyes of her captor but finding none. This figure of subjugated Persia may be a portrait of Stateira II, daughter of the defeated Persian King Darius III, taken as a political trophy wife by Alexander the Great. She had ample reason to be dejected, as Alexander's primary romantic devotion was to his companion and cavalry commander Hephaestion.

When we compare the #Oppian #mosaic to this spectacular maritime #fresco from #Stabiae, the conclusion is clear. The Great Mosaic under the Baths of Trajan was a lavish Fourth Style frescoed room translated into #mosaic form, but on a gigantic scale that dwarfed the viewer, certainly on purpose.

FRESCO OF A MARITIME VILLA, C. 50-79 CE. FROM VILLA S. MARCO, STABIAE. NOW IN THE MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI

A circular fresco panel set within a square red border, displaying a highly detailed maritime villa from the Villa S. Marco in Stabiae. Because Stabiae was an enclave of elite luxury estates on the Bay of Naples, this frescoed representation could quite possibly match a real structure that could have been seen directly from the actual villa's terraces. The architectural grammar is identical to the Oppian hill mosaic. A massive, multi-tiered basis villae projects aggressively into the blue-grey water, supporting a sweeping two-level colonnade that evokes the theatrical architecture of the Great Mosaic. Tiny human figures dot the terraces and use fishing poles, serving as scale markers to emphasise the vast size of the estate. Tall trees rise in the background behind the villa. Placed side by side, it becomes obvious that the Trajanic mosaic elevated this popular painted motif by executing it in precious stone and glass.

To understand what the stolen glass ocean of the Oppian Hill #mosaic originally looked like, we must turn to contemporary #fresco work. This fragmentary landscape from the #HortiLamiani in #Rome supplies the missing coastal atmosphere.

FRESCO FRAGMENT OF A COASTAL LANDSCAPE, C. 37-47 CE. MUSEO NINFEO, ROME

A roughly triangular fresco fragment excavated from the Horti Lamiani. It depicts a lively maritime landscape that provides the exact atmospheric context missing from the Trajanic mosaic. The scene features deep blue water populated by impressionistic, swiftly painted human figures who appear to be wading or working near the shore. In the background, loosely painted white coastal architecture blends into a hazy green and blue shoreline. Just as in the Great Mosaic, this maritime landscape originally formed part of the lower register of a panelled wall. This Julio-Claudian painting demonstrates how these aquatic scenes were anchored in vibrant, populated environments, giving us a vivid sense of the brightly coloured sea and sky that once surrounded the floating mosaic villas before their glass tesserae were salvaged.

Trionfo della Morte

#Photography #fresco #ArtHistory #TriumphOfDeath #TrionfoDellaMorte #MedievalArt #ItalianArt #ArtHistory #MiddleAges #MedievalPainting #DanseMacabre #MementoMori #AllegoryOfMorbidity #PalazzoAbatellis

Trionfo della Morte — The Triumph of Death — (Palermo) created around 1440-5. Originally from the Palazzo Sclafanim now in the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis. Often attributed to The Burgundian artist Guillaume Spicre, also known as the Palazzo Sclafani Master, the artist remains uncertain.

The fresco depicts a luxurious garden surrounded by a hedge. Death enters riding a skeletal horse, firing arrows from a bow. Death aims at characters belonging to all social levels, killing them. The horse occupies the centre of the scene, with its ribs visible and an emaciated head showing teeth and the tongue. Death has just released an arrow, which has hit a young man in the lower right corner; Death also wears a scythe at the side of the saddle, its typical attribute.

On the lower part are corpses of the people previously killed: emperors, popes, bishops, friars (both Franciscans and Dominicans), poets, knights and maidens. Each character is portrayed differently: some still have a grimace of pain on the face, while others are serene; some have their limbs dismembered on the ground, and others are kneeling after having been just struck by an arrow. On the left is a group of poor people, invoking Death to stop their suffering, but being ignored. Among them, the figure looking towards the observer has been proposed as a possible self-portrait of the artist.

On the right, a group of richly dressed noblewomen and knights with fur clothes are entertained by a musician. They appear to have no interest in the events and continue to socialise. The women in this group wear ostentatious necklaces and some are adorned with long, dangling earrings. A sumptuary law passed in Sicily in 1420 prohibited the wearing of expensive gold jewellery, except for rings, and declared that earrings could only be worn at particularly important celebrations.
