This #Roman potsherd discovered in Tuscany has a very unique design #FindsFriday

Whilst most terra sigillata pottery was decorated with small, standardised stamps, this example is large and ornate, hinting at an unseen side of Roman craft production.

Illustration, photograph and 3D model of a fragment of pottery. On its surface is stamped an image of a rectangular altar with a projecting cornice and base, which both appear to be decorated. Across the main body of the altar runs a horizontal garland with perhaps a left-facing songbird perched on top of a twig, and possibly a piece of fruit to its immediate right. Underneath this are stamped initials reading 'AV(in ligature)IL'.

They never did. It's less a treasure hoard than a single, tragic moment preserved in the archaeological record. 🏺💍🔥 #RomanBritain #Archaeology #FindsFriday

This #FindsFriday we have a medieval copper alloy and enamel Limoges hollow cast figurine from a crucifix, dating to AD 1150-1250. The figurine depicts Christ, moulded in relief, upon the cross.

Last week we shared a post on archaeological archives, but did you know there’s a whole online catalogue you can explore?

National Trust Collections provides opportunities to search the over 1.1 million artefacts in our care, whether by property, category, or date.

Perfect for #FindsFriday!

The homepage of the National Trust Collections website, with a search bar and the background of a box decorated with a range of people in raised embroidery dating to 1671 from Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire

A vast #Roman fortress was established at Usk in the 50s AD. Covering an area of 19.5ha. This was the base for a #legion of 5,000 at a time when the Usk river probably marked the edge of the Roman Empire.

The Maerdy Oak at St Fagans museum, Cardiff. Apologies, the photo does not do it justice.
This is one of the oldest woodcarvings in Europe dated to 4250 BCE.
It was found by workmen whilst working on a substation for the solar farm near Maerdy in the Rhondda.

It has a handle shown on the bottom of the the cup-shaped section of the vessel, with the head pointed downwards to the right at an angle. Mostly glazed in black, the cup has red-figured warriors with white spears and headbands, and red decoration running round the top and the intersection with the head. The horse has a thin bridle in a yellow-gold colour, a wide open red eye and ears standing up slightly forward.

A lovely little Clactonian notch, a specialised Lower Palaeolithic tool over 400,000 years old.
At #Archaeotech26 I made one and tried to work wood with it, as I've done a few times before. And, as before, it seemed very ineffective. So what were these tools used for?
